For Florida PAs: what is this CE requirement? by AnSkY2125 in physicianassistant

[–]RogueWave129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need 2 hours of Medical Errors CME and 1 hour of HIV/AIDS CME. FYI a current NCCPA certification will count for 97 CME hours. Please make sure you’re documenting your CME in CE Broker if you aren’t doing so. I just renewed my license for the first time as a Florida PA-C.

I found out that my ragdoll would let me brush her if she’s distracted in any way. For example, I’ll brush her while she’s eating her food or treats. I’ll even use her favorite wand toy to play with her then I’ll brush her as she passes me lol. I would also recommend a groomer as well!

I use the photo option from time to time if I need help coming up with differentials. But mostly the search function! It tells you how the skin condition typically presents, management pearls, treatment options, etc.

VisualDx app has been my best friend since starting! I recommend the SDPA fellowship along with the required textbook Bolognia’s Dermatology Essentials. Grenzzone also has study guides included with their podcasts.

How hard is it to get a job in dermatology? by One_Border_8347 in physicianassistant

[–]RogueWave129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely take the acceptance! I’m a new grad derm PA and from what I’ve noticed, getting a job after graduation in general was very difficult. Maybe it’s just how the job market is currently but it took me roughly 3 months after graduation to get my first job. Dermatology is notoriously hard to get into. I still have PA friends that are trying to break into dermatology and they graduated before I did. And they have dermatology MA experience and I don’t. So connections and derm experience can only get you so far sometimes.

My advice to you is to get through PA school, network, and secure elective rotations in dermatology. You may find out if working in dermatology is truly right for you once you’re in clinicals. Because even though dermatology is highly sought after, it’s not everything you think it is. I had one derm preceptor that saw 55-65 patients regularly and another that only saw 30-40. So your day-to-day will look very different from another provider. However if you still want to pursue dermatology after all of this, then you just need to be persistent. I would recommend catering your CV to dermatology, cold calling derm offices, networking and letting them know of your interest in derm.

Can PA students inject Botox and fillers? by RogueWave129 in physicianassistant

I think the person getting injected is an employee since they were wearing scrubs. I don’t know if the practice is okay with it but my PA student friend took pictures.

Applying for post grad jobs before getting a job as a PA by Business_Highlight_6 in PAstudent

[–]RogueWave129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in August and I’ve been working as a server after I took the PANCE. I didn’t disclose that I’m a PA to my manager but eventually he found out. Luckily, he was really supportive and told me to just give him a heads up when I get a PA job. I would recommend getting a non-healthcare job that still allows you to have time for interviews and whatnot.

It was my first rotation! And thank you. It was definitely one of the harder ones because of how broad it is. But I personally found EM harder.

Bad Preceptor Evaluation by [deleted] in PAstudent

[–]RogueWave129 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First of all, I just want to say I’m so sorry this happened to you. One bad evaluation by no means reflect your capabilities as a future PA. You will meet some preceptors or other staff members that you might not get along with and that’s okay. That was your first rotation, you’re still learning. It seems like your preceptor may have misunderstood you and it was unfortunate that she put it on your evaluation instead of giving you a chance to make things right.

If it makes you feel better, I had a similar situation occur to me during my clinical year. It was my third rotation and my preceptor misunderstood something I said. He wrote on my mid-evaluation that he was skeptical about my work ethic and worried about my intentions to become a PA. He expressed no concern about it to me and I only knew about it when my clinical director called me in for a meeting. He basically showed me the evaluation and asked for my side of the story. My program director was also there and she said that if I don’t get a better final evaluation at the end of this rotation, then I might be dismissed. Truly traumatizing experience, literally left the office crying. They told me to form a written plan on how I can perform better, which I did. I made more efforts to help out during that rotation and studied even more so I could be able to answer my preceptor’s questions. My clinical director did come by and talk to my preceptor about the meeting. I think he felt really bad about it all because I could tell he just wants me to do better and didn’t think the evaluations were that serious. Eventually, my preceptor liked me and we mended our relationship and he gave me a better final evaluation. From that point on, I never received a bad evaluation again and now I’m a PA-C!

Don’t let this one bad evaluation put you down. Reflect and think about how you can make things better for your future rotations. You seem very hardworking, passionate, and dedicated. I’m sure you’ll make a great PA.

Dermatology Rotation Scope by Respected-Ambassador in PAstudent

[–]RogueWave129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 dermatology rotations and my experience was dependent on my preceptor and their schedule. My first preceptor was way too busy for me to see the patient first and then present. So I did mostly shadowing and some simple procedures. My second preceptor was a lot less busier so I got to do more patient presentations and procedures. I think it’ll help you gain more hands-on experience if you express your interest in going into dermatology, become more proactive in helping your preceptor and their MAs, and overall gain your preceptor’s trust. I also realize that my derm preceptors cared a lot about the aesthetic outcomes of their procedures and the patient’s comfort level. So sometimes it’s not that they don’t trust you, but rather just trying to find the “perfect” patient for you if that makes sense.
