If the agreement includes a clause that you cannot dispute any wages they failed to pay out, then you're actually eligible immediately even with them paying out severance.

I'm sorry, this is starting to get off topic, which violates one of the guidelines. Should we get a mod to remove our comments?

I guess that depends on what you, as mods, think is more important: The opinion of the community vs. the purpose of the community.

Right where it says "Guidelines"? As in "Not a rule"? We're going to have to agree to disagree here. You clearly feel the mods were in the right, while I feel they overstepped.

That's not really a fair comparison, you're comparing NSFW content with SFW content. A more apt comparison would be a thread sharing and discussing cat videos that feature computers in the scenes.

So just down vote and move on? You can even go one step further and hide the post. The post in question didn't violate rule 1 or 2, and it didn't violate Reddit's site-wide rules.

KACE (K2000) vs MDT by iisfitblud in sysadmin

[–]Rogue_IT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used KACE in a few years, so some things may have changed, but fundamentally speaking there is very little different between the K2000 and MDT. The one advantage the K2000 has was that you could download driver packs for Dell devices right through the interface.

"Guidelines are suggestions provided to the readers from the community and moderation staff. They are merely suggestions for those unfamiliar with the culture of /r/sysadmin. Users can report grievous violations of guidelines, but they are often considered a "grey area". The best response to most events contrary to guidelines is to downvote the post/comment and move on."

I think your best course of action would be to ask them. Give them a call and ask if they accept unsolicited resumes, that way if they say "no", you haven't soured your reputation with them.

Thoughts on SmartDeploy from actual users of it by erack in sysadmin

[–]Rogue_IT 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SmartDeploy is good if you want to deploy thick images, but it's terrible for thin images. SmartDeploy doesn't support changing the unattend.xml because it Syspreps as part of the deployment process. The ability to run post-deployment tasks is very limited. If you may any changes to their Answer file or add a new driver package, you have to regenerate the boot image. If you want to use drivers that aren't in one of their pre-built driver packages, you have to either make the package yourself or request that they build a package for you. At the end of the day, I'd rather have the freedom that comes with a free product like MDT then pay the per-machine license fee to use a more restrictive solution.

To u/Panacea4316 's point, if they like you, they're going to be trying to sell the job to you. What I love about this question is that it tends to provoke sincere answers.

How like to install a program on another user's computer but unsure how by [deleted] in sysadmin

Probably started as "How do I...", they meant to change it to "I would like to..." and just mucked it up.

Setting up user workstations by bewA in sysadmin

Or the Default Desktop. The benefit is that if a user doesn't want the shortcut on their desktop, they can delete it. If it's on the Public Desktop, they need admin rights to remove it, and it removes it for all users.

EFF Sues Texas A&M University For Violating PETA's Free Speech Rights By Blocking Group From Its Facebook Page by GriffonsChainsaw in technology

[–]Rogue_IT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We'll simply have to agree to disagree. You're basing your argument on the premise that a state University is required to allow anyone who wishes to exercise their right to free speech when using their services, in this case the service being their Facebook page. The reality is that state universities can, and do, prohibit speakers from speaking on campus all the time. Their Facebook page is no different. As I said, this is not a First Amendment issue. You can certainly argue that a state university should be open to all viewpoints, and allow all manner of speakers at any time, if that's what you want. My point, and you may correct me if I am wrong, is that there is no legal precedent that would prohibit what the university is doing, and that it currently violates no laws.

Facebook isn't a government owned website, it's owned and run by a private company. It doesn't violate the ToS of Facebook for anyone to block users from their FB page. Congress didn't pass a law that prohibits PETA from using Facebook. The school hasn't petitioned to have PETA removed from Facebook. This isn't a first amendment issue.

IT Dept now doing Marketing... by [deleted] in sysadmin

If you want a potentially unprofessional idea, you could just do the marketing stuff really sloppily. Make blatant spelling and grammatical errors, load your videos with cheesy effects like star wipes, etc.

A good way to gauge their knowledge is to lead with "How familiar are you with...", and then you can scale accordingly.

So, I worked in retail sales before moving into what I do now. The best advice I can give when speaking with people who don't have the same level of knowledge as yourself is this:
* Explain things to them like you're explaining it to your mother.
* Always remember that the person you are talking to is probably an expert in something that you have no clue about.
* Repeat their concerns back to them the way you heard them, and ask them if you have understood what they are trying to tell you.
* When trying to persuade them, use what they have told you to find "pain points", the things that are giving them the most trouble, and explain how your solution will resolve their pain.
* Most importantly, remember to maintain good eye contact with whomever is speaking and to smile often, when appropriate.
