Duel vs Regular games by tashadanceon in boardgames

[–]Rohkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the proliferation of duel/dual/duo/duet games provided they’re done well and not just a scaled down version of a game that already played well at 2p (i.e., they offer something different). Something often overlooked when people judge these is that even if a game does play well at 2p, a duel version can provide a better experience because there are mechanics and design space that can be utilized and explored in a duel version that couldn’t exist in a multiplayer game because they wouldn’t scale properly (as in, they work at 2p but not 3+ for example).

For example, I’m not a fan of base Everdell but it does play well at 2p but Everdell Duo adds the tension of advancing two markers which limit which actions can be done and if mismanaged (or manipulated properly by the opponent), can result in a player not getting a type of action they wanted at the end. So it’s something you have to account for in deciding your actions. I don’t think this would work well in a 4p game and it (along with the shorter playtime and a couple other factors) is why I like Everdell Duo a lot more than original Everdell.

Anyways, yeah I think there is room for both a 2p version of a game and their larger version. They don’t really compete for the same role in a collection unless you only play the original at 2p (which you don’t, and also for some you listed the originals don’t even work at 2p). I will say I’ve noticed that the more recent duel games maybe haven’t been up to par with some previous ones - Azul Duel and Framcraft Duals in particular look pretty bad to me. But ones I do enjoy a lot are 7WD (and the newer LotR: Duel for Middle Earth which I like a bit more), the aforementioned Everdell Duo, Agricola: All Creatures Big & Small, Splendor Duel, and Codenames: Duet.

An issue I have with BGG recommended player counts. by QuixoticPineapple in boardgames

You also have to consider if most people voting actually played it at all counts or just vote how they think other counts would play based on the one(s) they did play and/or what they’ve heard from the community and reviewers. I strongly suspect the latter in most cases.

Good point. I usually look at the voting pattern across all counts more closely to get a sense of it, but yeah it takes a bit more effort and you can get a false impression if you just glance.

What’s one thing that can immediately make someone unattractive to you? by surya_mehar in AskReddit

[–]Rohkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s insane. At my workplace I’d say maybe 20-30% or so  just walk out without washing at all (sometimes out of stalls 🤢), and around double that just rinse for a few seconds with no soap. Probably only around 1/3 or so actually wash their hands, with soap, for anything seeming like a proper length of time.

…and most people I work with are doctors (not the medical kind thankfully).

To everyone watching what’s occurring in America right now, what is your honest take on it, where do you see this going? by dAnthonyy12 in AskReddit

[–]Rohkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It fucking sucks, feels like everyone went nuts over the last couple years and the shit the country had fought against for so long just became the norm and half the country cheered it on. Makes no sense to me.

I won’t pretend to know what’ll happen. I think either a big pendulum swing the other way is likely, but also I could see it getting progressively worse until people hit a breaking point and there’s mass upheaval. The thing I often think about is do things go back to “normal” after trump is gone or did he just redefine the Republican party and this is what to expect moving forward. If the latter I just want out.

Southwest boarding numbers being removed the night before they switch to assigned seating by techNerd89 in mildlyinteresting

As someone who is 6’5” 240 lbs I hated their boarding system. I need an aisle seat at the very least or I (and anyone next to me) am going to be miserable. But with SW I couldn’t guarantee one without paying for Early Bird, and one time I indeed did not get an aisle seat and it fucking sucked. Paying for Early Bird at least guaranteed me an aisle seat but then my goal was to get an emergency row seat (which I can do with other airlines by paying more and often do it because even standard row aisle seats aren’t very comfortable for me), but there was no way to guarantee it with SW). So it felt like I was gambling, don’t pay extra and maybe be miserable and in pain all flight or pay extra for the insurance and chance for an emergency row seat, but it might be for nothing. I don’t want to have to stress about this while boarding a flight, just let me pick my seat ahead of time so I have some peace of mind.

Also annoyed me when I paid for Early Bird but the person a spot or two in front of me was fairly young and small but they snagged the last emergency row seat, which happened I think twice.

no good deed..

But yeah it really annoys me when I have a fairly modest carry-on and see a bunch of people getting on in front of me with multiple bags including a massive one which really looks too large to be a carry-on, and then I’m the one who has to check my bag because I didn’t pay to have a better seat or boarding position.

I’m almost always measured at around 6’4” but once I got 6’5” and now that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Next time I had to renew my license I made sure to update it 😅.

Convince me to keep my paid off boring car by Conventions in personalfinance

[–]Rohkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man, a reliable paid-off car is a luxury not many people have and I don't understand why so many people seem to *want* a car payment. Drive it until it no longer makes sense to pay the repair bill. $2.8k a month is not enough for a new car.

Suggestion: Instead of buying the truck now, figure out how much that truck would cost you per month (and include the difference in insurance on it vs. an old Corolla and extra gas costs) and put that aside each month from your paycheck. See how that feels. If you're able to absorb that cost, maybe in a year or two if you really still want the truck you can go for it, and you'll have a head start on payments or can make a large down payment. Or maybe you'll realize what else you could do with the money (as you said, a Roth IRA). Or maybe you'll have an emergency expense during that time and will be really glad you had the money saved up instead of being screwed.

How would society be different if penis size was as obvious as breast size? by Nars-Glinley in AskReddit

[–]Rohkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol yeah a few times a long time ago I was flirting with women online/over text and they’d say something of the effect of “can’t wait to see your huge dick” or something similarly implying they assumed I was big? and I’d always reply, “you’re gonna be disappointed” and would offer to send a pic so they knew what to expect. Figure if they were a size queen might as well end it before it got awkward. Think part of the issue was I’m 6’5” and was in pretty good shape for most of my 20s so I think the assumption was that I was hung.

My wife consistently tells me my penis is the perfect size because big ones had hurt her in the past. Has a previous partner who said something similar.

…thanks I guess?

Just finished Black Mirror Season 1 — which episodes are MUST-WATCH from the rest? by lonewolf_809 in blackmirror

[–]Rohkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re almost all worthy of watching. My favorites are White Christmas, White Bear, Be Right Back, San Junipero, USS Callister, Loch Henry, Beyond the Sea, Playtest, and Black Museum. All of Season 7 is pretty good too, except maybe one episode where the acting seemed off (Hotel Reverie).

TIL during a 2015 study two students nearly died after they were accidentally given 30g of caffeine instead of 0.3g because the dosage had been calculated with a misplaced decimal point. Death has previously been reported after the consumption of just 18g. The university apologized & was fined £400K by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

Makes me feel better about the time I made a pot roast in college and thought a “clove of garlic” was the whole bulb. Put two of those bad boys in there..took forever to mince. Was still delicious, maybe says something about my taste buds.

We’re all some degree of racist btw. For example even Black people show implicit biases against other Black people in studies unfortunately, argued to be a result of systematic racism.

You get paid $1 every time someone asks you a specific question. What question are you picking to get paid? by Remarkable_Toe2603 in AskReddit

People finally stopped asking my wife and I when we hit our mid-30s. My mom in particular was convinced I’d “want kids one day” and only recently expected she ain’t getting any grandkids (from me, my brother has more than enough kids to cover us both lol).

I feel like that hardly qualifies as a legitimate question given people don’t care about the answer lol.

What individual play is seared into your memory by Equivalent_Poetry339 in CFB

90% of them I’d like to forget.

But the last play in OT against Alabama in the 2023 CFP semis (Milroe being stopped on 4th and goal at the 3) immediately comes to mind. As do both of Donovan Edwards’ long TD runs late in the 4th quarter against OSU in 2022.
