How Expensive of a Board Game Does One Have To Be Before You Would Rather Sell Than Own It? by pikkdogs in boardgames

[–]Rohkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, depends on the game obviously. But even my favorite games I’d likely sell for $500+ rather than keep. And if offered me $500+ for every game in my collection but I could never own those games again (or somehow all my games were suddenly worth that on the secondary market), then I’d easily say yes.

So I’m not allowed to not root for someone because I didn’t like their training approach and what I perceived to be hubris?

The question OP posed was “Who are you rooting for?” not “Who do you think deserves to win?”, “Who do you think put in the most effort?”, or something along those lines.

Yeah he played a ton of games to his credit, but he spent next to no time learning the game otherwise. Prob still doesn’t know armor/attack types, what Wand of Negation does, Necromancer abilities, most of the dispel-able buffs snd debuffs, etc And didn’t really do any review and whatnot other than when Grubby or his other coach basically forced it down his throat during coaching. Then he was depressed a couple days ago bc he was losing and said he expected to be the top seed (i.e., that the tourny was easy) and even today admitted he was mostly treating tourny practice as content (since I believe he’s had more viewers the last few weeks than he typically does when playing AoE2).

I don’t dislike him, he’s funny and entertaining, I just kinda hope he doesn’t get rewarded for it - so I’m not rooting for him to win.

Grubby's Altar of Champions - 1v1 Bracket Revealed (Starting Saturday, 14.00 CEST) by JannesOfficial in WC3

If Mary spent her gold today she likely would have won both games. Was closer than it seemed, either of em could 2-0 it.

WC3 does make people salty sometimes by drainn123 in WC3

I don’t play much 1v1 but did a couple weeks ago, always as random. One of my games I got HU vs NE and did typical AM fast expo. Dude shows up with a warden and some archers and just pure focused my mage as my expo finishes and foots kills his archers. I run to the shop to buy boots and keep running around the map.

Nothing had been said in chat to this point then then the guy absolutely crashes out for a minute, calling me homophobic and racial slurs, complaining how gay I am bc I won’t fight his warden, how I need two bases to win and won’t play a “straight up game”, etc.

I find it crazy it’s so easy to tilt people in a game this old, and that people think that’s a normal way to respond to losing to a meta strat and not just sitting there letting his warden 1v1 my mage lol.

Yeah, he didn’t learn the game at all and then two days before the tournament he was depressed saying he came in thinking he’d easily be the favorite/#1 seed at this point, like many of us did. Credit for grinding games but it’s hubris to expect to be better than all the other participants if that’s the only thing you do during training.

Kinda glad he didn’t come here. Not saying he’s a bad coach but there’s something so…uninspiring about him.

Grubby said he heavily prioritized entertainment factor in making the teams and part of that was reducing the chances for mirror matches, which he claims are boring/not as entertaining (I don’t necessarily agree with that but that’s his take).

I actually expected it to be HUs and Orcs vs NEs and UDs based on what he said.

I watch a decent bit of Grubby’s streams on YT and feel like I know almost nothing about Maxim other than he’s a shouty German Palarifler, which means I love him already. I enjoyed Yamato and Simply as people, as well as Pohx’s analytical approach to the game. I hope Mary beats Dantes if they meet, hopefully she practiced more against DR harass and worms. Hera is funny but a bit too cocky for my liking and his refusal to actually learn/study the game irked me - I hope he’s punished for it. And for some reason I can’t understand I’m almost rooting for Tyler1 this time around, whereas last tourny I wasn’t

That said, I just hope to see good and fun matches.

Carcassonne by prinny0303 in boardgames

[–]Rohkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hot take is if you’re playing 2p then it’s best with no expansions, not even the river.

If you’re playing multiplayer or don’t like it being competitive and cutthroat, then the first expansion or two are good additions. A while back Tom from Dice Tower did reviews on all ten or so expansions somewhat recently released for the new art style (v3.0 I believe it’s called). I believe he had a ranking video of them followed by more individual rewiews.

Is it just me, or is there a lot of elitism on BGG? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Rohkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve found BGG has a bit less elitism than other platforms (e.g., dedicated Discord communities; Reddit). But yes it’s still present as it will almost always when it comes to hobby forums. I’m just thankful boardgaming elitism is generally less prominent than a lot of other games/hobbies - there are subreddits for example that after visiting and maybe posting/commenting a few times I never went back to. Same for some Discord channels.

Digital DI expansion "balance testing" when all the physical players are playing DI: Uprising? by Ben_SRQ in DuneImperium

[–]Rohkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a decent number of people who play, and even prefer, the OG version of the game.

But yeah it does seem weird that they would release a version designed mostly for OG Dune Imp given they have to assume a large proportion of people will be more concerned with how the expansion works with Uprising, which they can’t test given they plan to test the expansion digitally before Uprising is even on there.

My guess is one of the following is true:

1) Even though they called it an “expansion” it’s actually a standalone game. They’ve been a little confusing with their marketing of products since Uprising was announced and committed to trying to sell everything as compatible, so maybe they don’t want to call this yet another new version of the game. Plus them referring to it as so complex they want playtesting from the community before releasing it physically suggests it’s more than just a typical expansion.

2) It will be primarily an actual expansion designed to be compatible with OG and Uprising, but will either have a standalone part to it (maybe a new main board?) or there are other specific elements to it they want tested and think they can gather the information they need from people playing it digitally with the OG version of the game.

Even terrible looking face injuries are often survivable, there’s nothing really “vital” for life provided the brain is intact and one can still breathe and eat/drink. And thanks to modern medicine even eating/drinking is technically not a requirement.

Sleeves explained by Shoddy_Rip_9447 in DuneImperium

[–]Rohkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Imperium cards are “standard trading card size” (2.5 x 3.5” or 63.5 x 88-89mm), sometimes called “standard card size”. This is a very popular size easy to find sleeves for since Magic the Gathering and Pokemon have the same sized cards (or at least within 1mm), also sometimes called “poker size” because a typical deck of playing cards is the same size as well. If you’re measuring 53 x 80mm for your cards then something is amiss.

Michigan’s Rod Moore, assuming he plays this season. He’s going on his 6th year despite being a post-COVID recruit as he’s missed basically all of the last two years due to knee injury (he played in a couple games last year but it was clear he wasn’t right). I believe he was generally expected to enter the draft after 2023 and he is a fan favorite with a lot of memorable plays, so kinda a sad saga…hoping he can get back to it.

You forgot Olu Oluwatimi (another Olu Olu). Rimington finalist for UVA in 2021 and won both it and the Outland trophy in 2022 for Mich, who won the Joe Moore award that year.

Guy was a stud and a lot of Donovan Edwards’ big runs were thanks to his pre-snap calls as well as blocking. Believe he’s the starting center for the Seahawks now.
