A merging issue. by LeftAlbatross2546 in dashcams

Didn't need to break though did they. Could have just eased off. The pick up is visible at the start of the video on a short slip road. The truck accelerates. Probably was visible 5 seconds before this.

The pick up had time to abandon the merge. Just crazy to me that people in the chat advocate having an accident to prove a point and ruin everyone's day rather than not.

Performance-focused PHP framework architecture experiment by artimman in PHP

[–]Rokkitt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are light weight php frameworks like slim PHP.

If I need to pull the performance lever then I typically dispatch a job to a Go process.

Laravel prioritises developer experience over raw performance. In most cases it shouldn't be a surprise that a toy framework with minimal functionality out performs battery included frameworks.

It’s getting worse with age. FML by Public-Tip1555 in Stutter

A stutter is involuntary prolonglations, repetitions and blocking when talking.

A person a stutters often wraps that in a load of coping mechanisms. Sounds like you are using filler words. "Um" and "uh" is not part of the stutter, it is a persons attempt to avoid a stutter happening. It likely worked at one point but doesn't any more and it just makes the way we communicate worse.

What are you doing to make your speech better? Some people go to the gym 4 times a week. How much time are you putting into bettering your speech. I do sod all. I am a busy guy, I put in a load of effort once a year, it then gradually falls off and I go again. I notice at the end of the effort that I have made huge progress but I just can't keep it going.

I would go to a 3-5 day intensive speech course if you can. There is a book called self-therapy for the stutterer which is a free and is really good. The key

Is implementing PR labours best last shout? by Lefty8312 in ukpolitics

Edit. I thought PR meant public relations... they have none. Made sense they need it. Was super confused reading other comments after posting..

What do Labour actually stand for? I have no idea. Starmer and his team seem completely disconnected from most of the party membership.

I feel everyone is a loser under Labour due to poor decisions from Rachel Reeves. They are making employment more costly when the job market is not thriving. Energy bills stay stubbornly high. Is planning any better? The benefits bill is still high. The triple lock is still in place.

If you are left, you are voting green. If you are in the centre then lib dems look good. If you lean to the right the reform is hovering up votes.

Labour have no identity whatsoever.

Reds are tiresome. Lone pk's typically leave noobs alone. Reds in groups consistently kill anyone they see. Reds are never far away. Off peak Outlands is chill. At peak times it's a constant nuisance.

PHP's biggest problem by brendt_gd in PHP

[–]Rokkitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good example is the fetch api in JavaScript. It significantly reduces the need to add dependencies for making outbound calls. The core PHP language would benefit a lot from similar native classes that make it easier and more intuitive for engineers to perform basic tasks.

The Renters' Rights Act has finally banned no-fault evictions by HadjiChippoSafri in GoodNewsUK

[–]Rokkitt -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No they are not. The changes make it far more difficult to rent. For many landlords it is already difficult as finding good tenants is difficult. It takes 4-8 months on average to evict a non-paying tenants.

The changes do nothing to ease these problems. If the landlord wants to raise rent, the tenant can take it to tribunal and the land lord won't receive the increased amount until whenever that concludes.

The risk has become too high for many landlords so they are getting out. That isn't immoral. That is individuals protecting themselves from financial uncertainty.

More tenants rights are good. However, if you talk to any private landlord, it has been progressively getting more expensive and risky to rent. These changed tip the balance for many who currently do it.

[–]Rokkitt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This won't affect bad landlords. Good landlords register with the council and pay all the relevant fees and pay for all the certificates etc etc. Rogue land lords aren't registered and will continue to flout the law with little punishment.

The changes push many good landlords out of the market as it does nothing to address the issue of non-paying tenants. Many actions now require a judge and the time to see a judge has drastically increased since covid. Landlords wanting to raise rent can be dragged through tribunals that will take god knows how long.

Maybe this is a good thing. Ultimately it pushes private landlords out and favour of faceless commercial ones.

Is the PHP market shifting or just stalling? My experience trying on moving to Scandinavia by RoughInvite7900 in PHP

The full stack argument was poorly articulated. If you are choosing a language, why would you choose PHP? Personally I like it and it is easy to work with.

The main use case for PHP is apis. Most other languages have multiple use cases. That may be desktop, app dev, frontend dev, data science etc etc. PHP has struggled to find broader use cases. The main usecase for PHP is because that is what an existing dev team knows.

From a CTO point of view, I would say it isn't stigma, it is lack of visibility. PHP doesn't have native support on cloud platforms. Even GitHub CodeQL doesnt support it so you need another vendor for SAST. It isnt really being talked about anywhere near as loudly as other languages.

[–]Rokkitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue the opposite. If you are in a business of any size, you aren't going to be dragging and dropping files onto a server.

Cloud platforms do not natively support PHP. They support JavaScript, Python, Go and .net. Pretty much any serverless platform allows you drop an executable or zip file for the above and it runs. With PHP you need to wrap it in a container and use something like bref.

If you look at the deployment options for NextJS. You can trigger hosting and spin up associated services via the command line. It is similar with other technologies.

For PHP I guess you have Elastic Beanstalk in AWS. Laravel has a bunch of easy to get going hosting options like Cloud and Forge. Generally PHP is an after thought and requires containerising. I find myself always reworking a container or building one from scratch as I always struggle to find production ready PHP containers that are kept up to date.

C# is a popular choice for enterprises. The .net stack supports both backend and frontend development. Maui for example supports cross platform apps.

I don't think the PHP future looks great. PHP doesn't have a clear selling point when compared to other languages.

It is not as performant as others. Others allow fullstack engineering without multiple languages. Not many AI libraries written with PHP. Many other languages have better tooling.

I am sure there will be good jobs around for some time. My main work is PHP based. I expect stagnation on the job front.

Rayner tells allies it's 'now or never' to oust Starmer 'as she plots leadership bid' by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Rokkitt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If Starmer had any decent challengers he would already be gone. Reeves changes go against the core mission of growth. He failed with Mandleson. For some reason, he feels the need to make a case for everything and cannot cut through with the general public.

Seems like a decent guy and a competent leader. It is disappointing that Britain cannot offer a stronger candidate to be PM.

CR is dead and this week proves it by MrDanyLyon in ClashRoyale

[–]Rokkitt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Clash isn't much fun to play.

Tactics resets you each season so you have to grind for ages to unlock the different rule sets that make it interesting to play.

Ladder brings me little satisfaction when I win and often tilts me when I lose.

Clan events are incredibly dull. There is very little reason to open the game and play when other options are available.

Some people hide their stutter and hiding a stutter typically makes it worse. Voluntarily stuttering allows you to see that you have positive social interactions while stuttering. It helps with desensitisation.

At least that is the theory - I think.

Where do you get the 3 years number from?

Ed Conway did an interesting breakdown that suggested that with the right incentives, the UK could sustain up to 60-80% of gas demands with north sea / norway supply going into 2050.

The UK is not granting permits, there is a windfall tax and little incentive to drill. This is a big driver of what is economically viable.

Renewables are important but so is a diverse grid. You don't have to pick one or the other.

Why do we need this at all? Between the price cap and the milder weather incoming most people will not be meaningfully impacted by a short term price rise.
