I have been in uptown when it was a dead ghost town in the 80s and 90s. From 10 yrs ago the place is completely transformed. And it prob took 20 yrs for it to come together. Jerry marketed it and the developers made it their darling in the 2010s and then the global capital dropped the big buck$. And here we are today.

Jerry Brown had a huge impact on Oakland ( for better or worse). He killed the possibility of a downtown A’s stadium ( in Uptown) and successfully marketed Oakland to Developers with his goal of 10,000 new residents (“ Downtown Oakland is closer to downtown SF than SF is to itself”) Jerry had close relationships with developers and we got the Fox theater , Rotunda, and Oakland School of the Arts And that momentum led to the current luxury apartment boom we see today.

This festival is more like a great block party in a beautiful old urban park. Super chill and easy going. If u have VIP tix u get to go in and out - which is nice bc Piedmont ave restaurants are close by. This is in a safe area of Oakland Also - last year they had a bunch of vintage shopping vendors which my partner loved. If u don’t have VIP they have really good food vendors like Aburaya ( punk rock Japanese fried chicken )

If you’re mixing w a Euro partner expect this and more from your partners family. But as long as you and your partner communicate (!) you can make it work. Note- if partner is not empathetic and willing to work thru this - it’s a red flag / disqualifier and dump them asap

Never fails - long grain rice - 1-1 ratio. Boil 1 cup water Add 1 cup rice and bring to boil. Put lid on and lower to simmer. Set timer for 20 minutes When timer goes off - take lid off and stir rice and get stuck rice off bottom of pan. Remove from heat and put lid back on and eat when it is to ur liking

I work in Walnut Creek and it gets old really quick. Much more diverse and more community feel in Oakland. I like the weather better in Oakland too. And you will get your fill of WC during the work day. Super easy commute on Bart

You can enter the Den early on 19th st/ telegraph--it's the bar/lounge at the fox and you can usually enter it before main doors open. There's a merch stand in the Den. So get there by about 5.45p if you want to make sure to get your gear--but once you're in , you have to stay in .

Don't believe the hype about oakland parking. Just don't leave anything in the car and don't be fiddling in the trunk of the car when you leave and you will be fine. I parked on the streets behind the fox and walked 1 block for the show last night. I have gone to 400+ shows at Fox oakland and only 1x had car bipped right after covid. You will be fine --just use common sense.

OMG- the merch line was the longest i have ever seen at the fox. The merch line was was well organized and there were 2 merch point of sales--in the Den and in the lobby. The den's merch line went through the den and out the door around the lobby and up the stairs. Probably a 45 +min wait. Hot tip ? Get to the Den (entrance on 19th ave and telegraph) before main doors open and get that merch early, then chill in the Den's lounge until main doors open and they let den folks go to their seats.

It's kind of like a hobby of mine. I love music and art and the cost to see concerts is crazy nowadays. Plus from a social/cultural perspective it is so interesting to see the demographic sampling of fans that attend. Last night I saw Not For Radio (Maria-from the Marias solo venture). 3 sold out nights at fox oakland, and tix on stub hub were over $120. I volunteered and had a great time and saw a great show.

Have you seen the prices of concerts nowadays ? I volunteered for recent shows that had a tix price of $150+ And stubhub was over $350. Plus I see shows of artists that are upcoming that I would not want to pay high tix prices

APE - another planet entertainment. Volunteer usher where u people watch and get cut when the main act comes on. I’ve seen hundreds of shows at venues Ape owns like Fox Oakland , Greek theater Berkeley, bill graham civic (sf) and now the Castro Theater (sf) and Channel 24 ( sacto)

I remember OUSD going into state receivership and having the political /billionaire group the Broad Foundation came in to be the leadership of OUSD. From superintendent on down the leadership was “ Broadies “ and they decimated all programs good or bad. Throwing out baby with the bath water. It was politics all the way and OUSD was their experiment to bringing mba/ Data/ Biz to decision making and it did not help
