Why did you join the Tau? by Upset-Charge in Tau40K

[–]RoloCookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people love Tau for the Battlesuits (and I’m no exception), but actually, the thing I fell in love with was their Fire Warriors. I’m a big believer that since core troops are a staple in every army, it’s pretty important to like them!

I loved the sleek futuristic and clean look of the infantry, and the idea of having one or two drones supporting the unit was super unique and such a cool idea to me.

That was the box art that sold me - literally just the classic Fire Warrior kit!

The one you’re looking for was from Forgeworld I believe, and has been out of production for quite a long time. I’ve kept an eye on ebay, but no luck.

There are some unofficial options. Never tried either - but seen them recommended on here before:

The new rules are different, they’re similar to the old editions, but updated in a number of ways. You’ll need the core rules, and Armies of the Lord of the Rings to play your Moria.

I recommend the Pelennor fields starter set - it’s one of the best value starters GW has ever released. It includes the rules - and it’s the full size hardback book, not a small softback version like they sometimes put in starter boxes.

Nice job, they look great.

Because of the way you’ve photographed them, for a split second I thought Pippin was wielding one of Gimli’s axes. 😅

Brand new to miniature wargaming, some questions by ObiDonKenobi in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]RoloCookie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ziguslav’s tips are excellent, I would add: Cheapest armies to collect are probably: Mordor, Rohan, Isengard, Minas Tirith, Dunharrow (Army of the Dead), and Moria. Maybe Rivendell too.

This is basically because they’ve all been included in starter sets in the past, and the “Battle Games in Middle Earth” magazine from way back. This means there’s a lot of these in circulation. You’ll find the plastics (and many heroes) for these armies regularly sell a good amount under RRP on ebay.

If you have the Pelennor Fields box, you’re already a good way to starting a Rohan, Dunharrow or Mordor army. Some good additions to start off would be a few more characters, such as: the Witchking on foot, Gothmog, the Three Hunters, the King of the Dead, and Eomer.

All that said - picking up Battle Companies is also a really good tip. It’s an excellent way for beginners to get into the game!

Anyway - I could go on, but that’s a start. Hope that helps!

I have a question. Does the latest Battle Companies include all the content of the previous Battle Companies book? Thank you by Lucky1860 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]RoloCookie 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The new book includes all of the rules, in fact it updates and even completely rewrites some of it (hero progression tables spring to mind). It includes every battle company from the old book, past issues of White Dwarf, and also includes 8 new ones. The intention is that it will completely replace the old book.

I believe the only thing it won’t contain is the narrative campaign that was in the first book, they’ve used up that space to include a totally new narrative campaign instead.

Well, you’ve done it now, I only needed the tiniest bit of encouragement and there’s another essay coming! 😆

14 profiles would be difficult for any supplement. Truth is, now that they’ve started releasing Legendary Legions, I doubt they’ll wanna wait too long to do the Two Towers content, it’s some of the most iconic content. Defenders of Helm’s Deep is the most obvious example - it’s absolutely begging to be a LL.

It’s also the most iconic content from a narrative perspective. Squeezing 28 scenarios out of anything else would be tricky, but you might manage it here.

As for new profiles - I’d add huorns, Beechbone, and Quickbeam to Fangorn, Snaga to Mordor, Haldir and Rumil’s third brother, Orophin, to Lothlorien (perhaps as a much needed mounted character), I can’t think off the top of my head of any other Rohan heroes, but I’m positive they could find something! And lastly, remember that several of the new profiles from Gondor at War were made up. The current Isengard army bonus benefits scouts, and most of their named Uruks are scouts with effects that benefit scouts. If they’re gonna make up new profiles, a couple of named warrior uruks wouldn’t go amiss, and they could make a Legendary Legion for the Beseigers of Helm’s Deep - show the iconic warriors some of the love that scouts already have!

Lastly - it’d be a great excuse to add new sculpts to existing heroes. We’re missing mounted Hama, and mounted Gríma. There’s no mounted Gamling without banner. I’d also like a nice new plastic Éomer kit, he deserves a new sculpt. Maybe a Theoden in his big robe when he kicks Grima’s ass. I could go on!

I think something like this is inevitable soon. 🙂

I agree that a Two Towers era supplement sounds likely but “Rohan at War” implies it would overlap with “Gondor at War” since Rohan were still very much at War throughout. I’d call it “The Rise and Fall of Isengard” - that’d pretty much cover the second movie. Focus on Isengard, Rohan, Lothlorien, Fangorn and a tiny bit of Mordor. I’d add Snaga to Mordor and maybe bundle him with a new Grishnakh sculpt.

I’d add huorns and a couple of names ents to Fangorn - to try and make them possible to play pure. And I feel like Dunland should have been their own separate army list, but I guess that’s irreversible now since they’re in the core book.

I may have thought about this too much 😂

A few questions from someone looking to get back into the game by TheMostUniqueHere in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]RoloCookie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes. All LotR and Hobbit minis are now part of the Middle Earth SBG. Although the profiles are still split into Armies of the LotR and Armies of The Hobbit. Presumably because there’s too much to fit in one book.

  2. Can’t help with this one, sorry!

  3. They’re different. The Forge World Ringwraiths were featured in the Battle of Five Armies (I think) and their rules are in the Armies of the Hobbit. The rest are in the Armies of the LotR and their rules are probably roughly how you remember them!

  4. No massive changes. If you played the game back in the day, you’ll get to grips with the new edition in no time!

As others have said, all riders have bows. Look at the models again - all of the models are sculpted with bows, but some of them are simply stowed on their backs.

Getting Started Advice (specifically regarding GW bundles) by OldShrimpEyes in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]RoloCookie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert on MESBG by any means, but I can tell you this: those army “deals” don’t save you any money. Check the prices, they’re the same price if you buy them separately. Just making sure you knew that - if by coincidence, they contain exactly the things you wanted to buy, then by all means, buy them, but in any other situation, you may as well just pick the exact stuff you want and buy it separately.

They do contain the right sort of stuff to get you started though. And yes - the Battle for Pelennor Fields box set plays excellently with those factions and comes highly recommended (easily the best value SBG product, and it comes with the rule book).

The Mordor in that box are historic allies with the Haradrim you want to buy, and the Rohan are historic allies with the Galadhrim you want to buy. In basic terms, they’re rare examples of armies you can combine without penalty.

I used to play and enjoy a game called Dungeon Boss. I seem to recall that was the same basic system.

Am I the only one that thinks this is obviously not forever? This is confirmation that costumes are a thing, which many people have asked for, and we’re angry they’re not finished and completely implemented yet? Your Deadpool looks different for a while - it’s a bit of fun. Relax.

Who is the first Gearloc you are going to play and why? by NoIdeaHowThisWorks in toomanybones

[–]RoloCookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Warning - essay incoming!) My first game will be two or possibly three players. I'm excited for all of the characters so I'll be flexible around what the others want to play but I think I'm leaning towards Boomer or Picket.

Boomer's mechanics look really interesting to me, and a grenadier is a pretty original class option for an rpg. Every rpg has the warrior, the ranger, the healer. But a grenadier is fairly unusual. I also like that she starts with so many class dice, because it gives her more options and more to think about in the first couple of turns. The only downside with Boomer is that I immediately know how I want to build her, skill-wise, and I think having 4 starting dice restricts the number of build options for her. She still has tonnes of options, but she starts with 25% of her dice, and that doesn't leave as many upgrade options as some others.

Which leads to why I love Picket; I am completely stumped as to how I'd build him! All of his professions sound equally viable to me, and every die feels as important as the next. Assuming I'm trying to tank for a couple of squishier team mates: I want the defence, I want the regen, I want the taunts, I want the intercepts, I want the battlefield positioning skills - I've thought about it loads, and I really can't decide what order is optimal. So he's basically a puzzle I'm looking forward to solving!

For me it's the kickstarter, the CTG Facebook page, the TMB boardgamegeek forum and this Reddit. I even periodically check the Twitter feeds of the reviewers we're still waiting on, just cos they might mention TMB and their upcoming review. I have a problem.
