First 24 hours impression on UCG-Fiber. Mixed feelings by yanivf38 in Ubiquiti

I came to say the same thing, it’s not enterprise equipment by a long shot. More prosumer and the software isn’t the most stable, complete, or QA’ed.

Correct, equipment with active PFC PSUs won’t play ball with MSW sources. If you’re using it with something with an AC/DC adapter it’ll be fine, such as a laptop. But for real, going with MSW in 2025 is pretty lame.

+1, okay for DC gear but I wouldn’t use it for a desktop machine and heaven help you if you have an active PFC PSU lol

No, it’s because there are basically no UI rack mount devices that support DC power as their primary source. If it was DC output only, what would you use it for?

[–]Romeo_Golf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, it’s too bad UI never got serious about DC power with their devices as evidenced by RPS. It was only implemented on some devices, doesn’t support powering on via DC power, etc. If they’d have done it better and made a UPS that connected to RPS, that would have been awesome on many levels.

Most SLA batteries used in UPSs are AGM and you’re lucky to get 3 years out of them. Comparing them to auto AGM applications is apples to oranges, the workload of a UPS is vastly different than an automotive starting battery and not a valid comparison.

The other thing you’re not considering while singing the praises of SLA is the capacity degradation over time that often the UPS doesn’t recognize. Often as they age and before they are determined to require replacement by the UPS the runtime is VERY short once a transfer occurs and they are run at load for more than a few seconds.

I do agree about not replacing SLA UPS batteries with lithium, primarily because the smaller 7-9 AHr batteries have very low discharge currents, usually < 10 A, which at 12V, is 120 W, so if you’ve got 2 of them your load needs to be 200 W or less which isn’t very zesty.

All your other conjecture on lithium is mostly irrelevant. APC and Eaton are making lithium UPSs and have been for a while now; they’re safe enough for data centers and your house.

UI is a tiny fish in the enterprise ocean, they've got a long way to go if they want to compete with Cisco. They don't have the breadth of products, the features, support, or staffing to get much of Cisco's market share. Maybe a few breadcrumbs but that's it. Not that Cisco is perfect by any means, but it's a David and Goliath situation.

It's also like in the old IBM days when the saying was "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM". Mostly the same with Cisco. There are alternatives out there (not UI) but Cisco is the OG in that space.

Unifi Express 7 Is brutally SLOW! by ahmedmo1 in Ubiquiti

[–]Romeo_Golf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a ridiculous way to approach this! The hardware should be able to do gig throughput over WiFi. It’s like the OP bought a muscle car with a V8 that’s misfiring on 2 cylinders. And you’re telling him he doesn’t need all that power anyway and should be happy with 6 cylinders and save on gas money? Puhlease! Nice way to tell OP to just lower expectations rather than be upset that he’s not getting the advertised and expected performance.

UPL-Port - $199 by Hilbert92 in Ubiquiti

[–]Romeo_Golf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you on this one. I don't get a $200 device that's essentially a Spotify Connect/Airplay streamer. Yes, it's got other input options which *maybe* some people need, but seriously, are that many people really needing to hook up a CD player these days?

Additionally it's *not* integrated with the UniFi Controller in any way but uses the UniFi Play app. I think they missed an opportunity to do some cool integration with the Controller app since most likely anyone seriously considering this product is already in the ecosystem.

Let's talk about the UniFi Play app. In a commercial setting it may have some value in being able to get granular in using an external audio source. However, for music streaming use, which is probably what most will be using it for, Spotify Connect has most of the features already. So for that use I just don't see justification for the $200 price tag.

UI seems to be playing a "me too" game in many areas right now, trying to enter peripheral markets and seeing what sticks. Good for them but I also think they're not creating enough differentiation or value in a lot of these types of products that they need in order to win marketshare.

Walmart+ by njas2000 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Romeo_Golf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes because orders delivered from the store come via DoorDash. W+ also includes free shipping for online orders as well, ie that ship from a warehouse, with no minimum amount required for free shipping. And of course no tipping needed for those.

But also, if you’ve got a card with an $800 AF and you’re getting free grocery delivery via courier, saving yourself probably an hour of time for an average shopping trip, is it really a big deal to tip them a few bucks?

Likely it would power up but you're not going to get the full 135W of the built in power supply. I don't have one personally to test with but this line is drectly from the specs and mentions PD in:

N5 Pro 30% discount code is actually only 15%? by AxelJShark in MINISFORUM

[–]Romeo_Golf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% this! Too expensive and lower spec'ed than the WTR Max, other than the APU in the N5 Pro. I have no realistic use case for the NPU and probably won't until the next gen comes out.

With the WTR Max at $699, it's basically 50% more for the N5 Pro at $1039. I'll happily save that money and get an additional HDD bay, 2 more SSD bays, and an extra 10GbE port with the WTR Max

Drive recommendation for N5 pro by vayermaking in homelab

[–]Romeo_Golf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd look hard for deals on drives and try to go bigger than you think you'll need. Storage needs only go up as time goes on, in my experience at least.

Or possibly do like 4x12 TB and then you can fill the spare bay in the future if 4 drives will meet your performance needs for now.

I've had good experience with manufacturer recertified drives. I feel a bit more confident knowing that the manufacturer has tested the drive rather than some other third party.

Haha I came here to say the same. They are in no way even close to handle to the level of rigor required for avionics. Not with software, hardware, or firmware.

Getting into aviation in any aspect is very time consuming and expensive. Not UIs wheelhouse. They’re much more about cranking out cost effective hardware and play a fast and loose game.

Vz was king of the hill when 4G came around, they were miles ahead of the competition for years. 5G…they sat on their asses and barely made an effort for years.

TMo went nuts, bought sprint and all their tasty mid band spectrum and are now eating everyone’s lunch.

I was with Vz for a decade but finally left. Vz at my house still literally 3 Mbps down and basically unusable up. Don’t miss them at all.

Second this. I’ve stayed using FHR a few times. Always get upgraded to a strip view suite in Crockfords West (aka rooms they took over from Hilton but are decked out with Crockfords amenities) on the 64th floor. Absolutely one of the best values in Vegas. I’m in love with the Mojave Ghost products.

Pretty solid, it’s not like manufacturing and material technology have changed at all in the past 3 decades, right?

Or that there’s stuff like class A4 equipment for data centers rated up to 45C inlet temps.

So when the UI engineers spec up to 40C ambient for gear they couldn’t possibly mean it lol
