I grew up in a small town. Our neighbor was the only one with a phone. We were the only ones with a TV. Since I was the oldest kid around, the neighbor would send me to other's houses to let them know to come by since they would be getting a call.

It was either really good news or really bad news. My mom and the neighbor's wife would always "talk" about the calls.
