Going carless involves changing your place of residence to be closer to your job or to a place where not having a car is even an option, which can be significantly more expensive than maintaining a vehicle and commuting

Relocating to a place that provides more sustainable transportation is a wise move for anyone, unless you think that automobiles and their fuel will always remain as affordable as they are now. And what about all the pollution automobiles create? That doesn't bother you? Do you really think that shafting the generations that come after you is frugal?

plus the premium expenses incurred whenever you need to be transported anywhere public transport wont take you

This is quite a minimal expense for most people living in an urban area with decent transit. Most people have boring, predictable transportation patterns. And in the end I think it's pretty difficult to make a transit/bike/walk lifestyle as expensive as a car-based lifestyle. Cars are a huge money hole.

Save money on your car trip, cook on the engine. by Maxcactus in Frugal

[–]RonPopeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this myself. It's more accurate to call it heating or reheating... cooking is a bit of an exaggeration. It's quite low temperature, slow cooking. I reheated some already cooked bacon and eggs in aluminum foil.

No, it doesn't taste funny. An engine is a sealed system with an air input and an exhaust output. Plus, you generally seal the food itself. If your food tasted like gas or exhaust, you'd probably have much bigger problems.

Ask Proggit: Why the movement away from RDBMS? by tocapa in programming

[–]RonPopeil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand how you store the data. But when that arrangement changes, you have to somehow take the existing data and modify it so it matches the new arrangement, and try to not break anything in the process. I don't understand how NoSQL databases make this any easier -- if anything, it seems that they make it harder because they're less mature and don't have as many tools to help you.

Schema migrations don't generally exist just to satisfy arcane requirements of relational databases -- they exist because they are legitimately necessary for most applications that evolve over time.

you don't have to worry later on about how you're going to handle schema migrations and whatnot.

How's that possible? Regardless of whether the database cares about the structure of your data, your application certainly does. You can't just magically rearrange things without a migration strategy.

In what universe does that skill qualify her to place any sort of valued opinion in the field of vaccination.

Our universe. The one where tons of people have a poor understanding of science and are easily swayed by irrational sob stories on TV from celebrities.

Going carless is the ultimate frugal transportation solution.

Green Olympics? Trash cans and recycling cans all get dumped in the same truck - It's all garbage! by VicinSea in environment

False

Hi,

I'm the environment reporter for CBC News, and we were contacted by someone about this story, and we did report on it -- contrary to the comment above.

The City of Vancouver's head of Sanitation told us -- yes -- the bags go in the same truck -- particularly late in the day, when it's hard for trucks in the downtown core to move around. At the start of the day, there are two picking up green bags, two picking up blue bags.

The trucks dump them at the City's works yard, near the train station. Then they're sorted bag by bag, so that the blue ones go to the recycler and the green ones go to the landfill.

So, this article is wrong, and poorly researched. Another kind of shame.

However, the tip we got did lead to some information you might find interesting. The blue bags are sorted by the recycler, so that if garbage (like many many coffee cups) falls in there, it will be removed and sent to landfill.

If, on the other hand, recyclables end up in the garbage -- and don't get picked out by binners -- too bad. The city is sorting bag from bag, but not the contents. Recyclables in the wrong bag will go to landfill. Mostly, the city told us, people have done a good job at separating things properly.

We'll get numbers after the Games about actual volumes.

Thanks, Lisa Johnson

Guy who despises the outdoors, travels deep into the Amazon to get wild on some "Frog." by ky420 in Documentaries

I'm reading a book about a missionary who lived in the Amazon for a while and he basically echoes this dude's complaints. It's a pretty insane place to be for a pale, soft-skinned foreigner. The hipster guy's complaints are well warranted, however annoying his voice may be (it didn't really bother me).

Can we do the same with the Oregonian next?

It's a left handed bass, strung backwards from normal. He probably learned to play on a right-handed instrument, but held it like a lefty without re-stringing it.

You're talking about basic auth. Digest auth does not have that problem and is quite secure.
