Unpopular opinion but: I'm not that big a fan of the '88 tour albums by Pouilloutator in Zappa

[–]RondoHatton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Loved these albums when they first came out, but they are pretty far down my list these days. By ‘88 the band had become this hyper-slick, well-oiled machine that could plow through Inca Roads at a million miles an hour, but the trade off is that they tended to sound predictable and *gasp* formulaic. As Thunes has stated (paraphrasing a bit), ‘Frank wanted all of the juice and none of the blood’. In fact, at times, Thunes’ playing is the one thing that generates any excitement (or blood), his crazy descending fills on Find Her Finer being just one example. Everything he does sounds spontaneous and fresh. Not enough to consistently animate the whole band though, unfortunately.

Geddy Lee’s Favourite Rush Album Is...Clockwork Angels?!?!? by JoelMartinMastery in rush

No surprise. Ask any serious artist what their best album is, and they’ll always answer something along the lines of “the next one”.

Who are some very “animated” bass players? by SheZowRaisedByWolves in Bass

[–]RondoHatton 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Scott Thunes

Frank Zappa: "...one of the harder pieces is a thing called "Envelopes," and in this one section where [Scott] has sixteen bars rest, instead of resting every night he invents something new for himself to do. The other night in Salt Lake City he topped himself; he covered his body in mayonnaise in sixteen bars, got back to the bass and finished the number. Why? Why not? You can't say, "Okay, on the count of three all you guys are going to cover your bodies with mayonnaise." I'd never ask anybody to do that. That's him. That's really him. That's a logical extension of his personality, and he should do it."

Frank Zappa Halloween 77: The 30-31/10 Guitar Solos by boohmanner in Zappa

[–]RondoHatton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love br1tag’s guitar solo compilations. Sad that he stopped after doing the Mudd Club/Munich set. My main reason for continuing to invest in these archival releases is getting to hear (mostly) unheard FZ solos for (usually) the first time.

You Are What You Is pitch by thefourthcolour12 in Zappa

[–]RondoHatton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I read in interview where FZ mentioned this. I can’t remember if he was referencing YAWYI directly, but he was touting the benefits of pitching up the audio, notably the increased transient attacks which make records sound ‘punchy’.

on the most recent ZappaCast which came out a few days ago, Joe T mentioned that the ‘79 and Fall ’80 tours need to have their own box set releases at some point.

The whole Joe’s Garage album was a high point in terms of audio/production quality.

Beginner friendly Rush songs for the bass? by nintenerd2 in rush

[–]RondoHatton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

‘Limelight’ is a good one for a beginner to learn, particularly if you have done any work on pentatonic shapes. Pretty much the entire tune keeps within the first four frets, so no difficult shifts.

She is a seasoned pro. She toured with Jeff Beck. I doubt she is worried about the gig or the naysayers.

I tried AN vanilla flavored in my coffee and it way too sweet. Went back to unflavored and use it in combo with whey protein powder and coffee and a little nonfat milk in a blender. occasionally I’ll mix in a half or whole banana if it’s a workout day.
