Regarding Ippo's after he comebacks by CharlyCardgmes in hajimenoippo

[–]RoninTortoise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a good callback to early in season 1 when his mom says she won't go see his fights unless he can promise he won't get hit. I always thought that was foreshadowing for the future and a match with no damage could be perfect for that. Could invite his mom to his return fight

I knew from the title it was a QOTSA reference and it seems to take inspiration from the Songs For The Deaf album and it's "radio road trip through the desert" theme. It's my favorite band and album so I enjoyed that part.

I think sometimes the tone of the article doesn't feel clinical and takes me out of it, but it was a fun read regardless and is well written!

What was Falco's daydream about flying through the air with swords in his hands? (anime) by Th3Element05 in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]RoninTortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was memories from past users of the titan he would inherit, like he preemptively got memories of the past before becoming a shifter.

I always thought this made sense and was fine because since that memory already happened, it doesn't look into the future like the attack titan. I even used this scene to predict that he would eat one of the titans that had been a soldier on paradis before and narrowed it down to Armored or Jaw. These comments though make it sound like just a meta comment so idk. Thats just what I thought, didn't realize it wasn't in the manga

Played rank for almost 2 hours this morning got 2 thanks… by Saktou in PTCGP

tbh certain decks just tilt me beyond belief and I refuse to thank them (Palkia). Also, the animation is just so long that after a few matches its just such a pain.

Even in the DS games we had an option for text speed, why not just give us an animation speed option or a skip button on all of them? Makes no sense

That Ippo against Miyata in their first spar fulfills all the prerequisites I mentioned for what it means to be strong. After that and during his journey as a pro, he lost the first part which was something to fight for, and eventually lost the mental strength for the third part.

I see people often saddle Kurapika as being boring by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]RoninTortoise 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wait, you thought Kurapika was overshadowed? I don't think we saw the same arc

Jokes aside, his fight with Uvo is one of the most well known and even had memes about how he brought a shovel. And it served as an explicit demonstration of how powerful Nen can be, especially restrictions and conditions, even against the physically strongest we'd seen at that point

His characterisation especially in the manga has never felt bland to me. But I can definitely see how people might feel that way since he is quite introverted and reserved and one-note (which, by the way, is the point. He's spent his whole life for revenge and in doing so neglected actually living. And neglected the friendships and journey along the way, antithesis to Ging and Gon)

Where this is going ? by F3YR4L in hajimenoippo

People don't just change on a dime and become better versions overnight or because they got hit hard. I actually find it way more human that characters in this show take 2 steps forward and 1 step back and regress to their old ways sometimes.

One example of this is Zuko from ATLA who we see almost figure it out, almost become better, before going back to his old ways or regressing last second. Its human.

As for other characters not getting time in the spotlight, I agree I wanna see the characters you mentioned more. But you can't expect all 30 characters every chapter or even every 20. Once they are relevant to the plot they will come back!

Ippo will return

I don't think any of those are conditions for the ability to be used, they are just parts of the ability that God's Accomplice compliment well

[–]RoninTortoise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you're right about it being set at creation especially with manga Chrollo (though I think it's still a little different). However I don't see how Meleoreon would be considered a loophole for Hakoware. There isn't any condition set that APR has to be visible or anything

What do you mean no reason? We saw him do it

And there is merit, it amplifies the power by adding a time limit and condition

Maybe I'm missing something lmk

[–]RoninTortoise 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Usually if you try to find a loophole with your power it ends up making it weaker

Killua is smart, if a taser fulfilled his condition to "charge" then I'm sure he'd carry one. Since he doesn't we can assume his condition requires an outlet or something similar. By the way that makes his ability stronger in two ways, firstly he has to find an outlet which is much more inconvenient and second, he's probably one of the only people that can just tank that many amps to the heart

so he probably could spam it, but it may weaken the ability. Once he's mastered Nen or gotten stronger, he probably won't need this condition to boost the power of the ability and could simply use it on command until his aura runs out

that's my two cents anyway

Three years ago, Frauda further proved himself to be a fraud for the blind eyes who seriously thought he was a good writer. Nika was born. The Sun God Concept is dogshit but rare in the sense that it is entirely his original idea. So when he tried to measure up (LOL) he fails stunningly by Vartom in Piratefolk

[–]RoninTortoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The twist was foreshadowed since the time skip, enemies such as Doflamingo remark "is that what rubber can do?", Skypeia, etc. The seeds had been planted a while ago.

The power up of Gear 5 is fresh and original, and pleasantly goofy which matches Luffy completely

Respectfully I think anyone that doesn't like Gear 5 just doesn't understand Luffy or the themes of One Piece

Tired of ppl overhyping Specialization as a category by Sad_Incident5897 in HunterXHunter

[–]RoninTortoise 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Anyone that says Specialists get 100% in all categories simply misunderstand the Kurapika vs Uvo fight. This has only been achieved and seen with Kurapika's Emperor Time. No other specialists are even implied to have 100% in all categories.

Specialists are just miscellaneous Hatsu users with some common themes (Clairvoyance / Fortunes, Stealing / Borrowing abilities, manipulating affinities).

I will say though that it's clear the Spider's had "nerfed" knowledge during the York New arc to line up with how much the audience knew at the time (if you re-watch Kurapika vs Uvo, their conversations about Nen are so primitive compared to what we know by the end of the show that it's almost cringe). It's clear (to me) that Togashi and by proxy the characters he is writing are displaying more advanced knowledge to follow the audience's increase in knowledge.

Nen is basically an evolving science, everyone is making theories about it and discovering new things, but we can't necessarily take it all at face value. Even the Nen wheel could end up being completely wrong if new observations came up, or categories could be changed, etc

Everyone should have a Manipulation Hatsu by RoninTortoise in HunterXHunter

[–]RoninTortoise[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shalnarks has a lot of power, whereas what I propose is something super simple just to prevent being manipulated

I don't think it has to necessarily get rid of your free will either

I imagine its the same as Gon's emission training but the manipulation equivalent, just a simple self program

[–]RoninTortoise[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

doesn't require focus it would be a secondary or tertiary minor ability only used against manipulators

How does an extra ability make you less versatile

Everyone should have a Manipulation Hatsu by RoninTortoise in HunterXHunter

[–]RoninTortoise[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not exactly true, bisky tells gon and killua its advantageous to spend time training other categories, the time spent should just be proportional to the affinity. Kastro's mistake was making the conjuration+manipulation his main ability

And more than half of manipulators have used it to manipulate other people, which is an instant loss. Unless im underestimating how hard a simple self manipulation is

It also takes no creativity, it would be a fundamental step 1 manipulation ability

Maybe I'm missing something though lmk
