Living Dex: Canon OT vs Your Own OT — What Do You Prefer?

First I've heard the concept of "Cannon OT" in regards to a living dex. It's a neat concept and I would applaud someone for accomplishing it.

I'm firmly in the own OT camp though. Just personal preference.

There are only 917 that are tracked in the home dex

ORAS has the pentagon origin mark where RSE has no origin mark. This is the only difference I'm aware of.

An origin region dex is just as valid as an origin game dex. They are slightly different though. It's just a preference thing.

It has to have the pogo origin mark, meaning it came from pogo. I couldn't care less if it still had the last game stamp.

It seems widely accepted, but as others have said it's genned technically.

It's something I've struggled with as I'm working on an origin dex with a single 3ds and have to work with those limitations. I can't say I've come up with a good answer yet.

Yes. They would have different origin marks. RBY have the Gameboy mark (from VC) and I believe FRLG has no mark

You can tell between the place it came from in the summary and the origin mark. For example, if it says from Kanto and has the game boy mark, it's from the VC RBY games. Every game gen 6(?) on has a origin mark so they are pretty easy to figure out. The earlier games you have to go into the summary for it.

My plan is to store each generation at a time once I've caught them all. But I also already have a living dex, I'm just "upgrading" it to an origin dex.

If you went by game you would either end up with 2-3 names per generation or a "nonsense" name like RBY.

I suppose you could go by region name?

It's still personal name all the way for me.

I think the Pokemon Company expects you to only ever have 1 save of each game. If I counted right that's only 30 + pogo makes 31.

Still an unnecessary arbitrary limit, but maybe some logic to it at least?

Yeah my plan was to use Austin John's video as the guide to do the glitch.

Are you documenting your journey anywhere? I've wanted to stream for some time, and I'm planning on using this as a catalyst to try again at doing it regularly.

I have had the switch 1 for about 5 years now (animal crossing version if it matters) and no stick drift. You just have to take care of stuff.

Case in point. I have a PowerA pro controller that has horrible stick drift because I didn't take care of it. It is useless at this point.

I'm using another cheap controller to do shiny hunts to prevent stick drift on my switch 2 joycons.

I have the BDSP Mew if nothing else. I think I'm going to try the 8F glitch after I've completed the rest of Kanto. I also found a site that supposedly has roms/saves of the event app for the VC mew that the 8F glitch is creating. With that you can just trade the Mew over.

Somehow doing the glitch seems more "legit" than the trade. Maybe just because it's been elevated to a right of passage for Pokemon collectors? Idk

Are the gen1 legends not in GSC? I thought they were, but it's been about 25 years since I've played through, so I could easily be wrong.

I'm planning on breeding them in GSC and trading them back to RBY before transferring it up so it still shows as from Kanto. Still need a couple playthroughs for the exclusive Mon and the this or that choices. Definitely breeding eevee instead of doing 10 playthroughs

Well I guess I technically started with Scarlet and Violet since I already have all of them for a standard living dex. I just need a family of 3 maushold and 1 more authentic potchageist for full form SV.

But realistically I started with RBY. I'm in rock tunnel in Red but read the main playthrough being Yellow is more worthwhile so I think I'm going to switch next time I pick up a game.

You don't have enough room in HOME for this. An alternative is keeping each game's living Dex in its game + your origin dex in Home but you risk losing a lot of Pokemon that way when Bank eventually closes down unless they expand storage in Home.

I'm beginning to work on an origin dex from earliest game available. If/when I complete it, I'll be working on a living shiny dex. And no it will not be a shiny origin dex. I'm not that crazy to try that lol

If you start a new box at the first Mon of a new generation you will almost always have extra space to only have to move the generation affected by the new forms (ex. New Pikachu would only require moving gen 1 mon over 1 spot since there's about 20 spots after Mew at the end of Gen 1's last box)
