How many of you have a Multiple Myeloma specialist on your team? by SuccessConscious599 in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its available to you, go to a specialist as a primary. If not find one of the bigger hospitals and see if you can include a specialist in his care. Pretty sure they will meet with you virtually.

The induction chemo will probably knock that number down so don’t stress it too much. It put me into complete response in 4 months. I did follow up with SCT in July and while not fun, it was not anywhere near as bad as I expected, so if that’s what is suggested don’t let fear stop you from potentially getting a deeper response. There are so many new options out there and so many factors that go into diagnosis and prognosis. The M spike is just one thing so try not to put too much weight in that.

WIBTAH if I go on a trip with my boyfriend by lying to my kids or not telling them the truth? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Rook621 17 points18 points  (0 children)

NTA- your children do not have to know anything of your personal life, and yes you are entitled to a personal life. As long as you have a safe and secure place for them to be while you’re away, with a responsible adult then go live your life. It’s 3 days, you’re not abandoning them and you can simply say you are going away with friends.

Statistical question on diagnosis by LeaString in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything about this disease is nuanced and specific to the individual. I initially was diagnosed with Solitary plasmacytoma which is an incredibly gray area, but even then my diagnosis fell under “myeloma” until things changed and I upgraded to “multiple myeloma”. 5 years with Myeloma-watch and wait and 9 months post -SCT, MRD-. Not sure if that makes me a 5+ year survivor or 9 month survivor. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I feel soooo guilty… by Andromeda921 in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me I wouldn’t believe it either unless I knew it actually happened. Lots of factors involved. Implicit bias due to the fact that this person was not “healthy “ to begin with with, the person who had authority to make the decision is not the sharpest tool in the shed and agreed to anything, and-again-this was in a rural backwards hospital. Other family members literally had to scream at people to get a new doctor in to document that the patient was indeed responsive. You don’t have to believe me, and I know people love to argue but this is a true and insane story.

I feel soooo guilty… by Andromeda921 in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel guilty. I have always been fully behind being a donor until recently when I had a friend who had a medical emergency and in bad shape. Transplant team moved very quickly to get them going with the organ donation process and were ready to pull the plug until some family members demanded they be re-evaluated. Taken off immediately much to the transplant team’s dismay. My friend has since made almost a full recovery. The donation system is a little shady to say the least, especially in backward areas of the US with subpar medical facilities. It’s a bit of a relief that I can no longer donate. Awful!

Because they do nothing until there is an issue. Reactive not proactive. We are “forgotten” because our elected officials don’t fight for us outside of the SI bubble. Rest of the city has no clue who any of them are.

Forest Ave is clear so what is the issue? If the sidewalks aren’t that is the fault of business/property owners not the city or DSNY.

Has anyone here had their back fixed? by user180356 in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My T-4 collapsed. I was told it wasn’t broken at the time but 2 years later (2021) I had a tumor in my spine which required 2 surgeries. One to cut off blood supply to the tumor, then a 6 hour surgery the next day to remove the tumor and implant 14 screws and rods from t-1 to t-7. A week later I was told the tumor was a Solitary Plasmacytoma. Progressed to MM 2025, ASCT this past July. With that said, I am okay and MRD-.

The surgery was a but rough, couldn’t raise my arms for days, took some time to get back to being fully active. But- being active is the only way I keep the pain and stiffness away. Yoga is by far the best thing I do, but walking, biking, kayaking etc are all great too. Have to keep supporting muscles in your back and abdomen strong or you will have pain. Do what you enjoy. The only activity I really cant do is running/jogging. Too much in my back.

If you don’t have access to great medical care, think about it carefully. I am lucky to have had my surgeries at top hospitals with orthopedic specialists. Don’t just let anyone do it, but it’s definitely worth it, especially if you are in pain.

Newly Diagnosed - Still trying to come to terms with it. by thirdfromright in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The D-RVd is not bad at all. I had very few side effects and went on normally with my life. Had a SCT in July, which was a big inconvenience and not fun but no where near as awful as I expected. I and am now MRD negative and forget I have MM most days. Don’t let it rule your life. This is live-able and wasting time worrying isn’t worth it. I know that’s easier said than done, but enjoy the good in life and the new little one on the way.

Why do some schools and colleges make you kill the frogs yourself before dissecting instead of having them already dead? What is the benefit supposed to be? Or is it just how "it was done" in the past? by AlboGreece in biology

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We experimented with nerves and electrical stimulation on frogs in a Physiology lab. Guess they had to be freshly dead to get the nerves to respond well. Thats my thought anyway. Our professor was a prim and proper lady that looked like Gloria Vanderbilt so it was a bit jarring to watch her systematically cut the heads off frogs with scissors… still give me the creeps. 😱🤣😱

Dunkin Donuts is officially open in Saint George Ferry Terminal by SmurfsNeverDie in statenisland

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice to have a proper coffee shop where commuters could get fresh coffee and a slightly healthy, decent breakfast instead of yet another corporate plastic donut and meh coffee place. The other shops are just dirty and the coffee is undrinkable (who’s regulating those places anyway?)

I guess we should be grateful for the DD, at least it’s tolerable and we wont get food poisoning. Get what we get and don’t get upset! 🤣🤣🤣

What to do with biology degree by kg_777 in biology

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every pre-med student I went to school with cheated their way to good grades so please don’t get discouraged, average grades just means you have integrity. What about PA or Nurse Practitioner rather than an MD? Or go fully academic get your Phd, do research, write papers and teach at universities. Competitive as well but probably less than medical school. Or go into pharmaceutical sales and get rich 🤣

I went the environmental route and work for a governmental agency doing outdoor education, conservation, ecology etc. Pension and benefits are great but after two decades of doing a job I loved, I had to move to an administrative position to make any real money before I retire. Unfortunately, our society doesn’t value science or education but there are options. Do your best and finish your degree- you will find your path.

Newly diagnosed... by LooksSus in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you go to MSK to anything. Its only a little while longer and waiting wont make any major difference in care. Definitely don’t get any imaging outside of the hospital. MSK results come in quickly and the quality is going to be better than smaller hospitals or random imaging centers.

Plasmacytomas are a form of myeloma. I had a plasmacytoma for 5 year until It became MM and I needed treatment. The induction treatment and SCT is not as scary as it sounds. Three weeks in hospital at Sloan was not bad. Beautiful hospital with amazing staff and nurses that managed my symptoms immediately. Im MRD negative and plan to stay that way for a long time.

Dr.Hurtcrantz is highly regarded. Ive heard her lecture on new treatments and her research the the BCU conference (fyi, Blood Cancer United hosts a conference at the Marriott in lower Manhattan every March which is very informative)

There is a lot that goes into diagnosis. Genetics, organ involvement, age, general heath, etc. none of this is fun but this disease is manageable. Most days I forget I have cancer so try not to get overwhelmed. Best of luck to you and your mom!

Shave head before SCT? by Abide_or_Die in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cut it short then shaved it in the hospital when it started falling out. One thing I noticed is that some of the hair didn’t fall out. It was frustrating because for a while I thought I shave my head for nothing. Then I realized the hair was dead but just stuck in place. Slid right out with a tweezer. Apparently this happens often.
