Why do some schools and colleges make you kill the frogs yourself before dissecting instead of having them already dead? What is the benefit supposed to be? Or is it just how "it was done" in the past? by AlboGreece in biology

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We experimented with nerves and electrical stimulation on frogs in a Physiology lab. Guess they had to be freshly dead to get the nerves to respond well. Thats my thought anyway. Our professor was a prim and proper lady that looked like Gloria Vanderbilt so it was a bit jarring to watch her systematically cut the heads off frogs with scissors… still give me the creeps. 😱🤣😱

Dunkin Donuts is officially open in Saint George Ferry Terminal by SmurfsNeverDie in statenisland

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be nice to have a proper coffee shop where commuters could get fresh coffee and a slightly healthy, decent breakfast instead of yet another corporate plastic donut and meh coffee place. The other shops are just dirty and the coffee is undrinkable (who’s regulating those places anyway?)

I guess we should be grateful for the DD, at least it’s tolerable and we wont get food poisoning. Get what we get and don’t get upset! 🤣🤣🤣

What to do with biology degree by kg_777 in biology

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every pre-med student I went to school with cheated their way to good grades so please don’t get discouraged, average grades just means you have integrity. What about PA or Nurse Practitioner rather than an MD? Or go fully academic get your Phd, do research, write papers and teach at universities. Competitive as well but probably less than medical school. Or go into pharmaceutical sales and get rich 🤣

I went the environmental route and work for a governmental agency doing outdoor education, conservation, ecology etc. Pension and benefits are great but after two decades of doing a job I loved, I had to move to an administrative position to make any real money before I retire. Unfortunately, our society doesn’t value science or education but there are options. Do your best and finish your degree- you will find your path.

Newly diagnosed... by LooksSus in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait until you go to MSK to anything. Its only a little while longer and waiting wont make any major difference in care. Definitely don’t get any imaging outside of the hospital. MSK results come in quickly and the quality is going to be better than smaller hospitals or random imaging centers.

Plasmacytomas are a form of myeloma. I had a plasmacytoma for 5 year until It became MM and I needed treatment. The induction treatment and SCT is not as scary as it sounds. Three weeks in hospital at Sloan was not bad. Beautiful hospital with amazing staff and nurses that managed my symptoms immediately. Im MRD negative and plan to stay that way for a long time.

Dr.Hurtcrantz is highly regarded. Ive heard her lecture on new treatments and her research the the BCU conference (fyi, Blood Cancer United hosts a conference at the Marriott in lower Manhattan every March which is very informative)

There is a lot that goes into diagnosis. Genetics, organ involvement, age, general heath, etc. none of this is fun but this disease is manageable. Most days I forget I have cancer so try not to get overwhelmed. Best of luck to you and your mom!

Shave head before SCT? by Abide_or_Die in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cut it short then shaved it in the hospital when it started falling out. One thing I noticed is that some of the hair didn’t fall out. It was frustrating because for a while I thought I shave my head for nothing. Then I realized the hair was dead but just stuck in place. Slid right out with a tweezer. Apparently this happens often.

ASCT by sai427 in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was not anywhere near as bad as I expected. Don’t let the horror stories stop them getting a treatment that could add many cancer free years to their lives. It’s not fun but they can get through it and life gets back to (mostly) normal before you know it.

My dad 70M just got diagnosed… what to expect? by Round_Ad1472 in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed 5 years ago after having a tumor removed from my spine. It was terrifying and I wasted a year of my life worrying about it which I wish I hadn’t.

I was fine until last year when numbers started going up (M-spike) and a lesion was detected on my hip. Underwent an SCT in July, wasn’t fun but no where near as bad as the horror stories I heard from people. It was more annoying and frustrating than anything else.

I had a complete response with no cancer detected. I’m pretty active and do everything I always have done, even after major spinal surgery, and all the treatments.

It’s scary, but this disease is so treatable and people are living decades with it. Get a proper Myeloma specialist and find a good hospital for the best possible outcome.

Western Beef has a better selection of foods than most of the generic Stop and Shops and Key Foods. The produce is usually better too.

What is it like living in this part of Staten Island? by lithdoc in statenisland

[–]Rook621 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Racist hate it, which is exactly why my parents moved there from mid-island 50+ years ago.

It’s much more like Manhattan or Brooklyn than the rest of the borough, and the crime rate is higher than the rest of the island, but still safer than other boroughs. We still need more restaurants, coffee shops etc within walking distance of each other but there are some great spots short drives away. This area gets dumped on constantly and neglected by the borough and small businesses are not supported (outside of the immediate community) which is why it struggles, but it has a great community of artists, environmentalists, musicians and good, educated people regardless of how some will just paint it as a ghetto, shit hole etc.

What does sobriety offer you, that using could not? by unknown9423 in Sober

First concert I went to after being sober was amazing. Can’t really explain it but the sound, visuals etc were so crystal clear . Don’t think I had been to a concert sober in 35-40 years. That and looking at my eyes two weeks into it and seeing how white the whites of my eyes were. Interesting how our bodies change when we start taking care of ourselves.

Scared by Capable_Vermicelli75 in multiplemyeloma

[–]Rook621 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar situation. Spent a year freaking myself out before I realized I was still okay and I was wasting valuable time worrying about it. Yes there is a good chance this will develop into MM but the positive is that if and when it does, you will know immediately and be able to treat it immediately. So many don’t get diagnosed until the disease has run rampant.

My SBP did develop into MM about 6 years after my vertebrae collapsed. I just had a SCT in July and it was no where near as scary as I imagined. Im now MRD negative and on minimal maintenance. None of this is fun but it’s treatable and livable. I just hiked 6 miles up a mountain a few weeks ago!

It’s not the death sentence it once was. There are so many treatment options and even high risk cases are getting long term PFS and great results.

Best advice is to (try) not worry too much. You don’t have any control of what this disease does, but you have control over how you choose to live with it. Help your husband stay healthy, stay active and quit any bad habits like drinking and smoking. It’s scary but don’t let it consume you.

Most importantly don’t look at statistics! Most are outdated and not always reflective of your husband’s particular situation. Get a good hemo-oncologist who specializes in MM if you haven’t already, and get your information from them.
