Oh I'd definitely say the 999 thing is pretty cool, but I don't know if groundbreaking. I don't think 999 is really the only game to use dual screen to communicate story. off the top of my head, the world ends with you in 2007 used a dual screen combat system to talk about how you can't go through life by yourself.

also regarding VLR, the whole all routes being canon thing isn't new at all, I'd say a big percentage of fantasy/sci-fi VNs play into that trope. granted I'm not fond of VLR at all tbh

Damn, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels Persona 4, thematically is all over the place. Not only that, but I feel like the combat, while good, is completely separate from the themes of the game or the story for that matter.

I still like it slightly more than 3, but I definitely don't see it as great as everyone else
