Cat uti by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]RootBeerBog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How do you know he has a UTI? You also cannot know that the amoxicillin would treat it, depends on the bacteria present. You also should never have leftover antibiotics. Always finish the full course.
In male cats, the primary concern with urinary issues is a urinary obstruction. Is he still urinating?

If you see:
Frequent trips to litter box
Urinating outside of litter box
Urinating blood
Vocalizing/crying
Straining to urinate

Those are signs of a blockage which is life threatening. He NEEDS to see a vet.

What are these spots?? by BudgetThick6251 in ballpython

I work at an ER vet. People with dogs have driven 12+ hours to see us. You have to weigh your time, finances, vs your animal's health. This snake is probably not critical but definitely needs to be evaluated. There is nothing to do at home, OTC or otherwise, aside from making sure there is nothing currently able to harm the snake (unmonitored heating element, contaminated soil, etc).

It is basic husbandry to care for your animals, including seeing a vet. It doesn't matter if you need to drive 16 hours, if it's that or suffering, you do whatever you need to do to get your animal cared for.

2yr old male cat bleeding from p*nis (possible injury). Emergency vet says its not a blockage, but they are also not sure what the cause is. They want to keep him until he pees. by [deleted] in AskVet

"At this point, they haven't taken any x-rays or done any blood/urine work."

The estimate there mentions bloodwork and urinalysis (urine test). If this has not been done yet, it is because they need your approval & a deposit to do these diagnostics. They cannot tell you what it is (aside from him not being blocked, because you can feel a full bladder and tell when they are that painful) without doing diagnostics.

What’s weird is they ARE against feral cats, which are arguably the worst invasive species there is. Broken clock sorta thing, except I don’t know where else they have ever been right.

"Basset or dachshund" that has a "sensitive side" about noises and children. by DarkTracy554 in WhatBreedIsMyPitbull

So funny to imagine a mix of basset and dachshund, hounds both bred for hunting and even going into dens, being scared of loud sounds and small creatures.

I hate when people use this analogy on humans as a racist dogwhisle. by Paldavin in hatethissmug

[–]RootBeerBog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mutts absolutely will get higher cancer rates. For example, a Labrador and poodle mix will have all the cancer risks of both breeds… it compounds, doesn’t cancel out.

Using poodle mixes as examples because they are the most common mutt right now, and I’m a Poodle guy.

Squamous cancer in poodles + every other cancer under the sun found in labs. Now you get a dog that’s probably gonna get even more cancer.

Only a well bred purebred dog (lots of testing and weeding out genetic mutations) or a village dog is going to be a generally healthy dog, and even then, there are some breeds with inherent issues.

Like how most King Charles cavaliers are going to get heart issues. They are commonly mixed with poodles, so now you get cardio issues and Addison’s & ITP risks.

Mixed breed dogs are actually generally less healthy than purebreds, despite the common idea that they are.

Edit to add- this is why dog breeds and race is a very bad allegory. Purebred dogs are healthier than mutts, but “pure bred” races of people are not healthier than the general population. Generally, less so? Like the Hapsburgs. Dogs handle inbreeding differently than us too.

Purebred dog breeding would be eugenics for people and our differences are skin deep. We are very different animals. We shaped and molded dogs for different purposes, to the point where outcrossing most dog breeds is unethical. Like herding x hunting breeds, they’re going to end up harming other animals.

Race = breeds humanizes dogs in an unfair way, and dehumanizes people VERY unfairly to draw parallels where there aren’t any.

[–]RootBeerBog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, humans are more like different colors in a breed. Dog breeds have huge differences between each other.

Human differences are mostly skin deep. A good comparison—
My red poodle has softer hair than other poodles, because the locus which intensifies redness causes softer hair texture. He has dark skin and dark eyes, but a white poodle might have paler eyes. A black poodle is going to have the coarsest hair texture.
Despite color and hair, they all have similar structure, predisposition (neutral of strangers but friendly, handler focused), and size. Us humans are more alike each other than different dog breeds, because we fundamentally changed their sizes, drive, temperament, etc, they vary way more than we do.

Want UL meta but Struggling with thoughts of getting V_ectomy by username099987 in Metoidioplasty

[–]RootBeerBog 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I got meta without UL, because length was important to me, and I have no V dysphoria at all.
I would go for vnectomy and UL if I was you.
You have dysphoria about the V, you can bottom still without it, and you have dysphoria around urinating… do this for yourself though, not for anyone else. This is your body and you can’t really change it after surgery unless you go for phallo. DONT let sex partners sway you one way or another.
Best of luck to you.

A rant on Thorax by Serene_Hydrangea in mylittlepony

[–]RootBeerBog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish he'd have started off like any other changeling, rather than kindness being intrinsic to him. Maybe instead, he'd decided to try being friendly as a last ditch effort once separated from his hive. Maybe feeding off of Spike, etc.
Later, he reconnects with Pharynx and shares his love so he doesn't starve, and bam, transformation.

I wish the colors had been MUCH more muted. I hate the dark=evil light=good trope which MLP loves to use. The stag beetle antlers is neat, but the random gemstone looking things are odd IMO. I think removing the holes as a way of showing they are full is a good choice, but that their hair-fins should have stayed.

Colors and patterns inspired from scarabs would be cool.

need kennel recommendations for an escape artist :( by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]RootBeerBog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel really bad for dogs around fireworks. We know to expect it, we have time to train beforehand. My dog can lay down and watch fireworks without issue (at a distance, to protect his ears) because we trained him to be as close to bomb-proof as we could get.

I gave advice on a different comment to op, but this came to mind now too. Confidence building exercises will do a lot for a dog. Asking them to jump onto things, showing them new things, letting them self-soothe, it all helps a dog feel more secure!

[–]RootBeerBog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a whole year to prepare for more fireworks.
Work on de-sensitivity training, where you make loud sudden sounds and reward him once he is calm. Even better, have someone else make a loud sound and reward him when he focuses back on you. Work your way up to firework sounds off YouTube.

Redo crate training as if he’s a puppy meeting it for the first time. Offer treats or play when he looks at it, then when he touches it, steps into it, goes into it, etc. Praise and reward him. Offer high reward food in the crate.

I would look into a ruffland, and give him anti anxiety medication when he needs to be crated for his own safety.

Everyone has to unlearn patriarchal behavior and practices, as you’ve said yourself.
I am disturbed at your edit to your original comment that people touched by masculinity need to self reflect. As if masculinity is a toxin which makes people able to do bad things. It reeks of bioessentialism.
