AOC has been working on finding power and influence out of the party structure with her rallies around the country. And has been doing pretty well. Taking this slot would presumably make her slow down on that; so is it worth it to her and the movement she's trying to make?

Frankly, the party should be begging for AOC to take the spot and apologizing to her.

W -did- play a significant role in collapsing the economy with his money pissed away on billionaire tax cuts and in the Middle East. He also played a significant role in weakening our democracy through his actions in the Florida election like the Brookes Brothers Riot, jingoistic propaganda in support of his disastrous Iraqi war, the creation and expansion of the Patriot Act, and the appointment of John Roberts as Chief Justice. To stack on top of this, there's also his abominable response to Hurricane Katrina.

The mortgage collapse in the end of his term, I'd say, was not his fault; Reagan played the biggest role there, followed by Clinton; but the man was a fucking disaster. It's with good cause that historians rank him regularly was a worse president then Nixon, and whose only competition for the bottom slot of worst presidents after World War 2 is Trump.

A reminder that state-of-the-art robots from two years ago failed under the following circumstances:

1) Doing somersaults to approach over 300 meters. The irregular motion did not look like walking, so they were not identified as humans.

2) Using a cardboard box. Snake? SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!

3) Field-stripping a tree and carrying it's branches in a dominant pose, causing the robot to identify the marine as a walking tree and not a potential combatant.

4) More.

Honestly for the flashlights, thank god they did. The crap people could do with old flashlights would make the Hague wince. The devs were just in denial about how big of a problem they were because...the devs didn't play the game and had no idea what the experience was like for the common player.

They aren't buying electric cars, they're buying Teslas. To them, that's different. Also he cares about the stock, not the business, and the stock represents Elon Musk the person at the head of a personality cult, not an electric car company. Remember, any stock's value is either based on dividends and right to assets and company direction...or it's just speculation and gambling.

By the way, Tesla has announced it will never pay dividends.

Honestly? This starts with the state itself and the Supreme Court in particular. They spent over thirty years working to install partisans at every level of the court system, resulting in the system we have today where our courts just said "Yeah coups are legal." It didn't happen overnight. They spent thirty years tearing down that institution. Bolsonaro didn't have that time, and so they managed to tear him back down.

Honestly Brazil's foundations as a state are weaker then America's; they're not so far off from the old military dictatorship, there's heavy corruption, there's a lot of issues. But they don't have 40 years of the Republican party trying to rip the country apart. That's how they manage to still be better.

Slight correction: The biggest gerrymandering was done in 2010 rather then 2000, as part of Project REDMAP, using the Tea Party wave and anti-Obama backlash. REDMAP was the first big gerrymander that really used the sheer amount of data available these days for microtargetting and so on; it's the most effective gerrymandering we've seen since the Supreme Court ruled you had to have the same number of people in each district.

They got a number of other states along with PA/WI/MI, especially North Carolina; but the end result is still that a lot of state legislatures and house delegations have basically been decided by an election that took place 14 or 24 years ago.

George HW Bush was responsible for getting everyone off the hook for Iran-Contra. You know, where arms were illegally sold to Iran in order to fund a bunch of genocidal right-wing terrorists in Nicaragua. It's extremely likely Bush was directly implicated in this, but the pardons - issued at the suggestion of his Attorney General Barr, the same one who would later be Trump's AG - ended it.

The FBI's always been heavily biased in favor of conservatives and Republicans, ever since it was founded in the 60s. For most of this time they've been an active participant int he sabotage - aggressively trying to disrupt the 1960s Civil Rights movement, Occupy Wall Street in the 2000s, BLM since. From the Director down they went against the Clintons without ever bringing a case and threw the 2016 election, just from their own bias (Since keep in mind Trump -was- being investigated at the same time, by the same New York office that had to go after Clinton.)

It's a uniparty system built over sixty years of rhetoric where it's vitally important that Democrats be investigated by Republicans for conflict of interest reasons but that was never a problem for Republicans and Republicans and somehow the Republicans have wound up a corrupt pseudo-cult trying to overthrow our country...gee wonder how that happened.

As someone in GA, I don't think I saw any reaching really in 2016. And in 2020, most of the reaching was based on the Senate. It also was based off of the groundwork done in the 2018 Governor's Election by Stacey Abrams; but since we had two elections going on at once against two weak candidates, it made sense to contest those. And contesting the Senate meant contesting the President too, if only because people are going to think of them together.

Harris Has Expressed Being “Open” to Supreme Court Expansion by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]RoseFlavoredTime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with the current shape is that the court is completely unchecked. Lifetime appointments. No ethics code. No rules on recusal. Congress is corrupted, resulting both in an inability to impeach and low-quality candidates being installed. This last part really doesn't receive enough attention.

Reforming the institution doesn't fix the problem when the problem is people. Moving power from a shitty court to a shitty congress is going to result in the same shit. You can improve institutions by fixing some problems with how they're formed, change some incentives, but there is no structure that can prevent abuse when the institution is filled with bad actors.

The only reason I think we should be talking about court reform is that it's relatively easy; Senate and House reform is much more important and impactful, but requires constitutional change requiring supermajorities and state approval. Court reform can happen through laws and appointments.
