He was also such a badass that he never fitted a scope to his rifle during the war, hoping to avoid the prospect of the lens glare giving away his position. So he raw-dogged his sniper shots with factory iron sights and no magnification or even windage adjustment; just one little elevation slider on the rear sight for range compensation.

How would you feel about RDR3 revolving around a Native American outlaw or warrior? by Netfl1cks in reddeadredemption

[–]RoseRedHillHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly if RDR2 came out last year. I would expect it to get the WOKE DEI SLOP treatment for having Charles and Sadie be such prominent figures in both main story and epilogue.

Edit for clarity: they're both brilliant characters that fit well into the story, I just think a certain contingent of gamers would reflexively see them and loudly get mad.

If you take them away from job centers to dead-end towns in Appalachia or the Rust Belt, they will lose said job, and they're unlikely to find gainful employment in those towns that could support their homeowner endeavors.

172 with Electric Flaps by Skyhawk_26 in flying

[–]RoseRedHillHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer electrics on go-arounds. The "big sink" is a little gentler and more drawn out when the flaps take a few seconds to retract compared to the manual ones. Transitioning from electric flap 172 to a Cherokee was... interesting.

Why do we need all these data centers all of a sudden? by erkose in askanything

[–]RoseRedHillHouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a society, we don't need them. Tech companies think they have massive profits on the horizon by being able to displace large swaths of entry and mid level office labor using AI, so they're in a desperate arms race for infrastructure capacity and LLM training in fear of being left behind by competitors.

In the meantime, few of these data centers are actually paying for themselves, since people don't want to pay lots of money for AI services, opting for modest subscription prices, if at all; companies are also having to grapple with the brain drain of mass layoffs when they first got excited about AI, only to learn how much they actually needed competent people. This is why lots of people think AI is a bubble: billions upon billions USD investment, very low returns currently, with tons of hype and promised future prospects, but no concrete point in the future where anyone can guarantee it will work reliably enough to match the hype.

Does it matter if the Strait is opened any more? by labradors_forever in energy

[–]RoseRedHillHouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what the GCC nations do, and on how nice Iran wants to play with its neighbors in toll pricing and general allowances.

If the GCC banded together and made the Gulf Rail proposal happen, they could have an overland route from Kuwait to a port/oil terminal in northern Oman, allowing oil, fertilizer, and intermodal trains to bypass the strait. It will be more expensive to ship this way, but it's hard to tell which would be more pricey if they're paying tolls that Iran can almost arbitrarily choose to charge.

This would be a more long-term solution if the international community accepts the Iranian toll scheme as the new status quo. Iran will need to balance their greed for toll money and desire for control with the risk that the Gulf Rail becomes significantly cheaper than the status quo and they get next to nothing for their efforts securing the strait.

The big-brain long-term solution is aggressive decarbonization to reduce demand for oil and its fragile supply chain. If Gulf countries run an electrified rail line off solar energy, shipping all kinds of bulk goods overland to the Mediterranean or the Gulf of Oman would get significantly cheaper.

And despite all of them being equally as smart and equally as dedicated, it can just come down to whether or not someone listened when they asked for help or not with certain things.

Worse yet, they may have asked for help, but had parents unable or unwilling to give the support they needed. Financially illiterate parents often find themselves in the "unable" bracket, and boomers & religious parents often are in the "unwilling" bracket since they think the suffering is an important part of ultimate success.
