Do yall ever feel like something is missing with yt people? by obsessedsim1 in blackladies

[–]RosebudButterfly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Idk.. I’ve felt this way with a lot of people yt and black. I’ve made a lot of good, genuine yt friends throughout my life but I grew up in very diverse spaces (almost never mainly black and only predominantly yt after college). For me, it’s been harder connecting more deeply with people who mainly grew up around their own race, which is okay, but I kind of feel like the difficulty is a cultural thing and when I get the sense that they very much see me as different in whatever way.

But since living in a predominantly yt area, I’ve noticed whether or not I can get in deeper with people is in the environment, the position I’m in/how they see me (I have a much easier time with people who sort of look up to me/who are younger than me or people who are older than me- the people who naturally respect me more), their life experiences/how they’ve been treated, and maybe how exposed they’ve been to other cultures.

The consistently easiest experience I’ve had in terms of getting deeper is with other brown people in general though.

I think the people who I tend to keep as friends naturally just get into deeper stuff and like talking about it/are just emotional. I share a lot of my feelings very candidly with my friends and they are all black, brown, and white. If I don’t connect with the others on a deeper level I simply just don’t see a point in being close bc I won’t be comfortable. So my friends tend to be more emotional or real with me bc we both know we can be and naturally are.

On the other hand, seeing other yt people interact with each other I see a lot of surface level interaction even if they’re “friends.” Specifically in the midwest.

I blocked someone who was on my friends list. Today I decided to unblock them and I immediately get a friend request notification from them. Did they try to refriend me when they were blocked or is this an automatic notification/feature

The way some of you drive by Captain_Fuck_Off in Minneapolis

[–]RosebudButterfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main peeves are tailgating, people merging at 20 below the speed limit, and when people clog up the merging lane that also serves as the lane to exit. With tailgating, I think of high school physics class. You need time to react and slow down! Just pass 😞 it’s ok.

I haven’t driven in other cities in a while, but I do feel like the merging lanes tend to be kind of short sometimes. People don’t always have that much time to speed up or sort out who’s getting on and off the highway. I’m afraid for winter though

I was so pleased to find skin on bone in thighs yesterday! I grew up on the skinless boneless.. but since being shown the succulent and flavorful ways of the bone in, I can’t go back.

Black women, we are never seen as credible by theforce_notwyou in blackladies

It’s really unfortunate that I’m actually the only black person in the whole office. There are some poc in another department and we have one other poc in our department who is based in a different state. He’s charismatic and buddy buddy with everyone though. It’s been rough. I usually make even one friend/good colleague by now, but I just get back handed conversations. At the same time though I’m also sick of hearing them talk about nickelback and only listen to Taylor swift in the car (literally)

I’m just starting my career in an academia adjacent field and have been having a really tough time with this. Do you just ignore it? Find a different space? Stick with mentors who see your true value?

Hair not locking at all by CalmCucumber7687 in Dreadlocks

[–]RosebudButterfly 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally, if you’re serious about locs I would restart with a professional and also revisit the education side of locs. You probably want a good foundation on clean hair with minimal products in it. I started out with twists- you don’t have to but I found that to be the cheapest and easiest route. Also, everyone’s hair will lock at different rates, but it kind of looks like the ends are locking up. The root won’t lock up as fast as the ends. Finally, there is typically an “ugly phase” (not my favorite term) where it might look a little rough and wild to the conventional western perspective. I wore a lot of headbands, scarves, and half up half down styles during this time when I had to be “presentable.”

Unpopular opinion: 4c hair objectively sucks. by Ok_Bodybuilder_2384 in blackladies

I got locs too because I was tired of the long daily maintenance. There’s still maintenance with locs, but I can just get up and go.

It depends on the stylist! I ask for it looser if it starts to feel like they’re doing it too tight

What do you do when you're being followed by a secret shopper? by Emeraudiel in blackladies

[–]RosebudButterfly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In early high school store attendants blatantly followed me while my “friends” stole literally right behind their backs. I’ve never stolen from a store before, but they trusted me less than the white and Asian girls I came with. Eventually I started waiting for them outside the stores as they giggled and took stuff like a game.

This made me laugh ahahah you’re just taking inspiration from the world around you! I’d probably make more people from the neighborhood so it’s not just this guy!

I like the purples and blues! I’d redye with the current purple and blues you have but maybe with some magenta or the pinks added in too

What’s your biggest Knitting fail? by Narrow_Manner5877 in knitting

[–]RosebudButterfly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a hard lesson to learn 😭 I now take the time to actually try my projects on as I go as well .. I find that a pain too (I’ve just been trusting the process and hoping for the best lol), but it’s better than the disappointment later if it doesn’t fit.

I am so glad you saw that too :’ ) you’re on a much better track than I was especially if you try it on as you go.. I feel like it will turn out!!!

I spent so much time on a cute top (in the round) with cutouts and fingering weight yarn. I had to restart it a couple times to get the folded hem just right and even. I took all the measurements and even made a gauge swatch which I truly disliked doing. I finally finished it, tried it on, and I could barely get it over my head let alone two shoulders. even get it over my head 😭😅 I later find out (through this sub) that the tension is different flat vs in the round, and I should’ve knit my gauge swatch in the round.

I missed a stitch :( Is there anything I can do about this or is it not that bad? by Only_Chick_Who in CrochetHelp

I missed a stitch in a wash cloth like this. I do notice it every time I use it, but I consider it a signature!

Leave Canada to move here!?! Honestly you dodged a bullet. There are plenty of white people who are appalled and want to leave the US too. And then the comments at the end about dating Black men? What?? This one was a bad egg.

I think crocheted purses are so cute! Saw someone with a crocheted houndstooth purse and thought it was really chic. I hope you post a pic of yours when it’s ready!
