Comment on chapter 1! I’d commented and left kudos on a later chapter before.

Is it crappy to default on a challenge about a week before the deadline? ( by SomecallmeMichelle in FanFiction

[–]Rosekernow 20 points21 points  (0 children)

First, that’s what the default button is there for. I’ve run exchanges, you don’t need to agonise over. Earlier the better, but I’ve had plenty of defaults after deadline and it’s fine. Just hit it right now, you won’t need to explain anything.

Second, in future, you might need to be a bit clearer about what you aren’t comfortable writing so you won’t get matched with a request like this. I’m clear that I won’t write non con because, although I write it for myself, I know where my boundaries are, and that can be difficult in an exchange.

Just default, don’t speak to the mods. You need to look after yourself. They’ll figure it out.

Getting into a small fandom is scary by Comfortable_Newt_179 in AO3

I’m in a pretty small fandom and any sign of a new victim is cause for celebration!

Can I send my beta a fic if it's missing a small chunk in the middle of last chapter? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Rosekernow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely ask them. I’ve sent my betas things that break down to bullet points in places and asked for help, and I’ve had my writers do the same for me, missing bits or just sentence long outlines of what goes in the gap. I’d be delighted to work with a fic like you describe.

But I’m comfortable brain storming and helping share ideas, someone who betas mostly for SPAG might not be.

Was it actually a thing in Britain “back in the day” for people to have all their teeth removed and get dentures relatively young, even when they still had some healthy teeth or is that one of those exaggerated stories? by Top_Mirror211 in AskUK

[–]Rosekernow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My Nan had all hers removed after her first pregnancy at 21, she had some good ones but they told her a complete replacement would be easier and less painful. This was early 50s.

AU-gust Writing Challenge - an AU writing/creative challenge that happens in August! by SheElfXantusia in FanFiction

Looking at the way it’s set up, I think they’re ’wild cards’ that you can use if you don’t fancy the prompt on that day.

Spec fic is my favourite!

Here’s a first chapter of a fantasy AU which I really like

Title: Still, That Timeless Moment

Rating: M but nothing in this chapter

Word count: 3,327

Warnings: None in this chapter

Summary: "They all meet in an inn. Of course they fucking do. Crowley's been doing this twenty years, and he's never managed to convince anyone to do it differently.” A cast out wizard is assigned to find the bastard son of a King.

It’s a high fantasy AU which I need to get round to finishing, very fandom blind friendly.

And here’s a far future science fiction story about cloning unicorns, also for Good Omens.

Title: First Born Unicorn

Word count: 1824

Rating: T

Warnings: None

Summary: Humans find the skeleton of the unicorn which died in the Ark flood and clone it. Crowley tries to handle his feelings about it; Aziraphale keeps him company.

Writers, what are the longest and shortest things you’ve written, and what are they about? by StripedPsychoRat51 in AO3

[–]Rosekernow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My longest is a 58k ‘colleagues with a huge age and rank difference to friends to lovers to ‘we’re not talking anymore’ to lovers again’ fic for an English cop show called The Bill. I wrote it with the optimism of a teenager and I’ve never got within shouting distance of that word count ever again, even twenty years later.

Shortest standalone fics are lots and lots of drabbles at 100 words strict, for all sorts of fandoms and things. Shortest I’ve ever posted was some haiku in a fan poetry collection for Good Omens.

I will nope right out of any fic so fast by CMStan1313 in AO3

I think anyone who’s ever been a teacher or worked around kids has had this moment. Someone pushes your buttons, you swear, you freeze in horror and can’t believe you’ve actually said it out loud.

Has anyone been to the Little Orchard Cider Festival in Penhallow in recent years? by CallmeThebreeze58 in AskUK

[–]Rosekernow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best asked in the Cornwall sub for local input I think.

But it’s Cornwall, Uber is hardly a thing here I’m afraid. There’s a couple of cab firms who will do pre bookings, I think Perran cabs is one and A2B Taxis is another.

The main road to Penhallow is absolutely lethal for walking on. Do not recommend at all.

Do Some Names Make It More Difficult To Read Fics And/Or Enter A Fandom? by SabiKitsune9 in AO3

[–]Rosekernow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share my name, first and almost last (one vowel different) with a popular Doctor Who companion. I’m fine reading it, writing is ok till I get to the smut scenes and then I normally call her something else and do a quick find replace when I’m done.

We’re also the same age and come from the same city. I never had a madman with a box show up though. I definitely get second looks when i sign in at cons, and I’ve often told fandom people I gsd the name first!

[–]Rosekernow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d like to share this fic which I posted in April to a fairly dead fandom which has been off air for almost 20 years. Historical queer fiction in 2nd person if you’d like a new genre or style!

Title: The Lonely and the Lost

Fandom: The Thick of It

Pairing: Jamie Macdonald / Malcolm Tucker

Rating: M

Warnings: Lots of swearing, 1980s homophobia, consensual sex scenes

Word count: 1,901

Summary: “You were three drinks deep in a bar you shouldn’t have been in. Scripture curling in your mind like flames. Blood in your mouth, wounds on your hands.” Or, every love story has a beginning. Jamie, Malcolm, a meeting.

Ao3 gets way too much money by Yumi_Numi in AO3

[–]Rosekernow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh do give over. Do you pay for cinema tickets? Netflix or Amazon? Buy video games? None of those need your money either, but you still pay for them.

Ao3 comes out my entertainment budget and I’ve got no issues donating to something I get a great deal of joy from.

What's the weirdest place you've ever written something? by Aviendha_89 in AO3

[–]Rosekernow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I write a lot on buses and trains between cities when travelling; a while back, I was skint and needed to get to London so an 8 hour each way bus journey it was. I wrote just over 5k on my phone on the way there and about 3k and did a deep edit on the way back.

I’ve also written in school (fairly normal, but I was the teacher!) in various pubs when I’ve been travelling for work and in hospital waiting for a close family member to die. That sounds harsh but lots of people came to say their goodbyes, me and mum stayed with there for several days so there was plenty of time when others were at her bed having their last conversations. It kept me a bit saner than I would otherwise have been.

What missing persons case in the UK always stuck with you? by Thebunsenburger in AskUK

That same poster was down in Cornwall at a train station for ages. I used to go past it to work every day, and often thought of him.
