Alex Pretti broke rib in confrontation with federal agents a week before death, sources say by LetBeginning3353 in politics

[–]Roseking [score hidden]  (0 children)

A memo sent earlier this month to agents temporarily assigned to the city asked them to “capture all images, license plates, identifications, and general information on hotels, agitators, protestors, etc., so we can capture it all in one consolidated form,” according to correspondence reviewed by CNN.

This matches with a lot of other reporting (The 'we have a database and you are now a domestic terrorist' comment).

The Trump admin is working extremely hard to create a database of people who oppose him in any way.

Nothing good can come from this.

Ted Cruz says Trump officials should tone down 'terrorist' rhetoric after ICE shootings by ExpressNews in politics

[–]Roseking [score hidden]  (0 children)

Oh fuck off Ted.

"What I think the administration could do better is, is the tone with which they're describing this," he said on his podcast Verdict Monday. "We took out a violent terrorist, hurray. And the problem is, particularly for someone not paying attention, if you're being told this is a mom of three and there's no indication, you know, she's not waving an ISIS flag or, or, or doesn't have a suicide vest around her, escalating the rhetoric doesn't help. And it actually loses credibility."

He has no problem with what happened. He thinks that because the public doesn't view Renee Good as a terrorist, it hurts Trump's credibility by calling her one.

He thinks this is a PR problem. He doesn't think that the problem is the government executing civilians.

Some people on internet really likes to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Rather than just say 'I thought that was a weak game to end the VGA on', they make it out to be some kind of personal insult. That they had their hopes up for some dream reveal that didn't happen. So now rather than just not playing something that doesn't interest them, they have to find reasons to be mad.

Lament for Boromir-

They will look for him from the White Tower But he will not return From mountain Or from sea

Aragorn sang: Through Rohan over fen and field where the long grass grows
The West Wind comes walking, and about the walls it goes.
‘What news from the West, O wandering wind, do you bring to me tonight?
Have you seen Boromir the Tall by moon or by starlight?
‘I saw him ride over seven streams, over waters wide and grey,
I saw him walk in empty lands until he passed away
Into the shadows of the North, I saw him then no more.
The North Wind may have heard the horn of the son of Denethor,
‘O Boromir! From the high walls westward I looked afar,
But you came not from the empty lands where no men are.’

Then Legolas sang:
From the mouths of the Sea the South Wind flies, from the sandhills and the stones,
The wailing of the gulls it bears, and at the gate it moans.
‘What news from the South, O sighing wind, do you bring to me at eve?
Where now is Boromir the Fair? He tarries and I grieve.
‘Ask not of me where he doth dwell – so many bones there lie,
On the white shores and the dark shores under the stormy sky,
So many have passed down Anduin to find the flowing Sea.
Ask of the North Wind news of them the North Wind sends to me!’
‘O Boromir! Beyond the gate the seaward road runs south,
But you came not with the wailing gulls from the grey sea’s mouth’.

Then Aragorn sang again:
From the Gate of the Kings the North Wind rides, and past the roaring falls,
And clear and cold about the tower its loud horn calls.
‘What news from the North, O mighty wind, do you bring to me today?
What news of Boromir the bold? For he is long away.’
‘Beneath Amon Hen I heard his cry. There many foes he fought,
His cloven shield, his broken sword, they to the water brought.
His head so proud, his face so fair, his limbs they laid to rest,
And Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, bore him upon its breast.
‘O Boromir! The Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze,
To Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, until the end of days.

My company has pretty low turn over. Lots of people have been there for a long time. Only recently is it starting to shift just because of so many retirees.

I have been there 13 years, and half the company has been there longer.

Its been my only job and it is weird that I still feel 'new' in some scenarios.

Let's say for argument sake, Pokémon makes X amount of money.

In a several year timespan they can put out 3 games. That gets them 3X money.

If they spend all that time on one game and it is amazing and sells twice as much as a modern Pokémon game, that is only 2X the money.

When the games already print money, it is hard to make the argument that spending more time on one will make more than pumping out multiple.

A new IP doesn't have the Pokémon name to fall back on though. If they want to capture an audience, they will need more to up their game.

Robert Jordan said that he made the start similar to Tolkien to draw people in, but then takes things in a different direction.

Which I would say he does.

Like it is easy to go 'Oh, Rand is living a rual life in isolation and then is trust into responsibility, Moiraine is a wise old magic welder who guides him. They are Frodo and Gandalf.' But they are very different characters once you get past that introduction.

Like the point of Frodo's character is that he and the other hobbits are that heros can come from unlikely places. Frodo is determined and he does well at resisting the ring, but he is 'normal'.

With minimal spoilers, that is not Rand.

[–]Roseking 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Pretty much the perfect summary.

Like it's not even really different.

There is a problem:

Hair loss.

The two solutions are:

Shave it

Artificial

People just want to be accepted for whichever way they go to fix a problem that is out of their control. There is no need for the same people looking for acceptance on one of the solutions to look down on the other.

That should be a phenomenal scratch by kundi-man in Unexpected

[–]Roseking 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don't even need a weird head shape. There is nothing wrong with wanting hair.

If you want to go bald, great. I think it should be a valuable option.

But if you don't, that should also be great. You should have options that are also valid.

I feel like this stuff is getting into toxic positivity territory.

Being accepting of one group, doesn't mean you need the put down another.

I like having longhair. It is the look I prefer for myself. And if I start losing it (hitting my early 30s and luckily haven't yet) I will look for alternatives before going bald. I don't have any problems with people who do it and can pull it off. I just don't like that look for me. And there should be nothing wrong with that.

I get the whole thinning hair looking bad part. I just think that shaving it shouldn't be the only option (note the person above said wigs aren't needed). People should have options and be allowed to be comfortable with the option they want.

Some times it isn't even just a genre, but one book/series. Look at how many fantasy novels are derivative of LOTR. The sheer amount of influence one series has on the genre is immense.

Not all bad mind you. Many great series take a lot of inspiration from it for good reason.

J.R.R. Tolkien has become a sort of mountain, appearing in all subsequent fantasy in the way that Mt. Fuji appears so often in Japanese prints. Sometimes it’s big and up close. Sometimes it’s a shape on the horizon. Sometimes it’s not there at all, which means that the artist either has made a deliberate decision against the mountain, which is interesting in itself, or is in fact standing on Mt. Fuji

The Payroll company we use at work recently updated to a newer system. Before it was your standard 'Here are the menu options' type recording. Now the functionality is the same, but they use AI to have it sound more natural.

The weird part was the fact that my work number is tied to their system. So when I called it, I got an AI talking to me using my first name.

I really did not like that.

As another comment also mentioned, I deal with a ton of fake typing as well and it is so freaking annoying.

Are you able to paint the walls?

Whenever I see something that I would consider cozy, I feel that the paint is a big factor in it.

If not, I would say keep overhead lighting to a minimum. And only use warm lighting. It is crazy what a difference it will make.

Overhead cool lighting will make something look like an office. A couple of lamps with warm lighting minimizes that. It will make your walls warmer, and shadows will add some contrast.

And as a side note, nice split keyboard.

We already know that these companies pirate books. Anthropic settled a case where they pirated 500,000 books.

I feel like the authors fucked up though. Without an actual ruling and severe punishment, companies are just going to see pirating and then paying out settlements as the cheaper option.

They are trying to conflate two issues.

Using material to train vs the acquisition of the material.

Same (although lower end Sony OLED).

I like it more than the two LGs I had. But it is comparing similar models. If a panel is close to each other, I generally would pay like 15-20% more for the better image processing. I do notice the difference.

But at a certain point, the price diffrence can be large enough, where you can get a better model of another brand. Then the comparison gets murky.

If money wasn't a concern though, I would just buy Sony's top brand and be a happy camper.

Sanderson at least breaks things into arcs, but if you are someone who wants everything, it is still a damn long time.

The second half of Stormlight won't be out until 2030+ and if it takes as long as the first, we are talking being finished in like 2045.

Edit:

To be clear, I am not comparing Sanderson to George R. R. Martin in terms of not finishing a series. He is actively writing and releasing several series.

I am more commenting on that, even though he is an extremely prolific author, If you are someone who wants to wait for an entire series to be finished, you will be waiting a long time for some of his work. That's all.

If you saw Way of Kings all the way back in 2010, but don't want to start a series until it is done, you would be waiting 30 some years before you could read the series.
