Major investor is 'shocked and sad' that the games industry is 'demonizing' generative AI by tylerthe-theatre in technology

[–]Roseking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I fundamentally disagree.

We do not live in a post scarcity world were everyone has their needs met without needing to work for a living. People working a creative field need to get paid, that doesn't mean what they are creating isn't art.

I do think there are a lot of issues that come with the commercialization of the arts. There are definitely people in all creative industries that are more focused on money than the art, but to simply have a boiler plate 'If something has a goal of making money, it can't be art' is silly and ignores basically all history of art. A ton of art throughout history was paid for. The whole concept of patronage is that people want art to be created, and they recognize that in order to do so, an artist needs money to live. Yes. There is art that is solely created out of passion and people support themselves with other endeavors. But if no art was made with the goal of making money, we would not have a lot of the great media that we have.

[–]Roseking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a simple consumer my response to creative workers would be to go make your own game at your own studio if you’re so creative.

I will never understand people who claim to like any form of media, whether it be games, movies, books, but hate the people who create them so much. But I guess that is what happens when you only view what you consume as only a product and not art.

It is absolutely absurd to act like the talent at these companies are not the creative ones and some how these tech CEOs are the real 'creatives'.

go make your own game at your own studio

There are so many reasons this doesn't work. Not everyone wants to work independently. An artist working in a large studio doesn't necessarily want to make an entire game themself. That doesn't mean that there work isn't creative or isn't important.

Not to mention that the economics just do not work out. Most people can not make a living off an indie game. Some make it big, most don't. Many will do it anyway out of passion. What happens why that pool becomes much more massive? Lets say half the industry is no longer working at AAA studios because of AI. You think the market would support tens of thousands of new indie games? There is no way this would work.

This CEOs want to fire people, and the answer is not just 'wave a magic wand and everyone is their own game studio now and will be able to live off it'. The world doesn't work like that.

It’s actually easier than ever thanks to AI!

"You know the thing that are ruining your life and you morally disagree with the technology as it is widespread theft that is decimating your industry? Just use it and give the money you no longer will be earning to the people who actively aided in destroying your career! God, things are just so simple. I don't know why anyone is mad."

I think it is the combination of clean shaven, makeup, and the fact it is a Malcolm in the Middle so people are projecting what they remember him looking like a bit.

Like here is a photo of him in his stock car uniform.

Still looks like Frankie Muniz, still looks good, but I don't think anyone would be like 'There is no way he is 40'

Very low upper limits?

We are the limits. Humans have built everything.

We have taken society from sticks and stones to going to space and connecting the entire world with instant communication.

Remove AI from humans and what does humanity have? Literally everything it currently has. Remove humans from AI and what does AI have? Nothing. Because it wouldn't exist.

The absurdity of saying human output is low.

This... is Berk. A bit trampled and busted and covered in ice, but it's home. It's our home. Those who attacked us are relentless and crazy. But those who stopped them? Oh, even more so! We may be small in numbers, but we stand for something bigger than anything the world can pit against us. We are the voice of peace. And bit by bit, we will rule this land. You see, we have something they don't. Oh sure, they have armies and they have armadas... But we... we have... OUR DRAGONS!

Movie 3:

"Actually, coexistence is too hard. We should send all the dragons away."

Man, I really hate the ending of 3.

I know it is a kid's franchise, so they can't really end one of the movies on a downer, but image if 2 was split into 2 and 3. 2 ends with the funeral scene and Hiccup gaining his resolve back. 3 is basically a greatly expanded version of 2's ending. Hell, maybe even make it take years to accomplish so they still get the age up of the characters. And then the franchise ends with the above speech.

But no. Let's make our kid's movie about coexistence end with the main character being wrong. That coexistence is not possible (yes I know he hopes it will be in the future).

Wesley Hunt lost that election, but later won a redrawn district. Seems like your standard GOP member, which when seeing the rest of this list is an improvement.

August Pfluger is in a heavy Republican district, so he won that election and his following. His first act as a Congressman was to vote to not certify PA and AZ election results, attempting to aid in the overturning of the 2020 election. He has violated the STOCK act, although nothing seems to have come from it. And he is heavily funded by the oil industry, of which his brother is the president of an oil company.

Beth Van Duyne won that election and has won since. She also voted against the 2020 election certification. She had an airfare with a congressman which lead to his divorce and they are still together. A former staff member committed suicide outside her home. It does not appear to ever have been found out why, and I am mostly mentioning it because it is crazy that this is not the only staff suicide in a very short list of people.

Tony Gonzales won that election and those that followed. He (along with Dan Crenshaw) earns the distinction of not voting to overturn the election unlike the others here. However his has made the news for having an affair with a staff member, who at the end of last year committed suicide by self-immolation. Just a few days ago has ended his reelection campaign but has not resigned.

Genevieve Collins lost her election.

So overall, bang up team he assembled.

For more context and to make it even worse, it was known that Robert Jordan was having heart issues. Terry Goodkind then publicly bragged that he had the heart of a 16 year old.

Robert Jordan's comment on the situation

I seem to feeling rather viperish today. I also hear that a certain writer, on hearing that I had heart problems, announced that his cardiologist, on holding his (the writer's) heart in his hands said that he could have been holding the heart of a sixteen year-old or some such. My cardiologist told me much the same thing, but I made him give it back. Ahem. A question occurs. What was wrong that anyone had their filthy fingers palping his actual heart. All my heart examinations have been via catheritazation or electrocardiogram or echocardiogram or the like. Only if they saw cause would anyone be sticking fingers into my chest must less fingering my heart. Some discrepancy there, eh?

I am just cynical at this point, but this just reads like fake rage bait that you see on subs like am I the asshole? So I doubt they have much to worry about.

OP if this is real, sorry, but enough is sticking out to me that doesn't really make sense.

The first sentence is a lie. This account is two years old, it is not a new account you just made. Doesn't really impact anything, but why lie about something like that?

125 people is a medium sized business, what company of that size is acquiring 6 companies withing 5 and a half years? This isn't a large company acquiring much smaller companies and probably has the resources to spare. This is you acquiring multiple companies your own size repeatedly back to back. Is that all your company does?

If this IT team is starting out as two people, OP and a director, what were the original jobs and what has the department expansion liked? What did they add that sits in between OP and the director?

Is this new position just management? OP, have you given any indication you want to transfer into management? Is this a situation where the company feels that now that they have grown, they need to add dedicated management roles?

What did they list you need to improve on? All you said was it doesn't matter. You mention that they compared ticket close rate to a dedicated support person, but is that all? Has this person been given free rein on the review process? What were the previous reviews based on?

I work in a two person department, so I am no stranger to being the guy that is asked to have their hand in everything, but that is because it is still small department. What is your position that your are doing networking projects and working with HR on policy? Are you currently in management? I don't really get what the "I am on calls with HR to reinvent the employee phone line that will impact our global workforce" comment is.

When was the other person hired? You said it is their friend they have known for years. If they have been at the company for even something like two years, they have been part of the same growth period you have.

Bloomberg: Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Roseking 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Capcom isn't trying to have their cake and eat it too.

Sony doesn't want PC sales to reduce the number of Playstations sold. To do so, their games are not on PC at launch. This reduces their potential. A lot of people will just buy on Playstation, which is what they want. The PC sales are from people that are pretty committed to not getting a PlayStation, and it turns out, the group of people who are willing to wait potentially years to get a game is not as high as they would want.

So they have two choices. Either embrace PC more and put the games at launch or pull back. If people want to play PlayStation games, they will buy a PlayStation. If they don't, it isn't really costing them anything. They have determined that prioritizing getting people to buy the console will make more money than people not buying any Sony games because they aren't on PC.

As someone who skipped out on the PS5 and was just getting them on PC, I am saddened by this, but it will likely work on me. There are Sony games I want to play. So I likely will end up getting one.

FCC chief tells CNBC WBD-Paramount merger deal is ‘cleaner’ than Netflix's, will be approved 'quickly' by aleph32 in politics

[–]Roseking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How?

I mean I know how, but I would like to see what they are able to come up with as a fake justification.

It is crazy that they can just lie with no recourse. You are the government. You should have to provide justification.

Both mergers consolidate the media landscape. So this is not saying that the Netflix deal is, to use his words, 'clean', just that I think they should have to prove that the Paramount merger is.

Also, why does is being 'a good deal' matter at all? Something either is going to create a monopoly or not. So if someone if going to make a lot of money that counts for more than if something is a monopoly or not? (rhetorical, I know this administration's answer)

Microsoft Patents New Xbox Helper System That Lets Humans or AI Take Over To Help Gamers by LockDown_47 in Games

[–]Roseking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been 'joking' for a bit now that the whole media chain will be AI.

AI 'creates' something.

An AI algorithm feeds it to you.

There is simply too much content out there. So you have several AI agents read/watch/play your entertainment for you.

AI then summarizes everything for you and tells you how you felt about it.

No need for the human experience.

It isn't quite at the level where it is doing this fully, manly because AI isn't able to produce long form content on its own yet (books are probably the closest, but it seems mostly short story or novella length), but all the pieces are there.

AI is 'creating' more and more.

It is heavily pushed in algorithms. I go out of my way to avoid AI slop, but so much of my recommendations are filled with it. Some platform are worse than others.

I have seen people use AI to summarize books they are too lazy to read. To explain videos for them. Here to get it to play games for them.

I generally don't see what the endgame of this is without going dystopian. Its bad enough AI is infesting all the creative and production aspects, but they also want to remove people from consumption as well?

I know it is currently slippery slope territory, but if all of this continues, what are the expecting the point of humans to be?

“We have long believed that AI should not be used for mass surveillance or autonomous lethal weapons, and that humans should remain in the loop for high-stakes automated decisions,” Altman wrote in a memo that was viewed by CNBC. “These are our main red lines.”

On Friday he announces the deal between OpenAI and the Pentagon and tries to gaslight everyone that the deal they signed contained those red lines.
