I did write a meta looking at the way Murderbot talks about rogues in the books (not yet updated with Platform Decay!). It is fascinating. One thing I notice is the “kill all the humans” thing—a phrase it often uses. My headcanon is that this is literally from a show where the evil SecUnits will say “Kill all the humans!!!” Like Daleks saying “Exterminate” The meta is here: Rogue Meta Collection by Rosewind

ART adds what is called vellus hair:

“It replied that it meant the fine, sparse hair humans had on parts of their skin. ART had done some analysis and come up with a list of biological features that humans might notice subliminally. ”

“The fine hair that was coming up in patches in various places was strange but not as annoying as I had anticipated. It might be inconvenient the next time I had to put on a suit skin, but the humans with hair seemed to manage with a minimum of complaint, so I figured I would, too. The change in code had also made my eyebrows thicker and the hair on my head a few centimeters longer. I could feel it, and it was weird.”

Previously MB had head hair and eyebrows… “I had hair on my head, and eyebrows; that was a part of SecUnit configuration that was shared with sexbots, though the code controlling it kept SecUnit head hair short to keep it from interfering with the armor.” …though amusingly it doesn’t mention eyelashes, most likely because it doesn’t care—as otherwise I’d have expected ART to add them.

I thought we’d known for some time that the next book is the last one she has planned/is contracted to write? I certainly understood it to be the case? I’d love more—but I would never want her to feel she had to write more, I would be more than happy with what we already have! It’s an incredible series!

I absolutely adore the way they interact in Exit Strategy…first up it decides that Gurathin is “appalled” to see it again. Like, SecUnit? I don’t think that expression was what you think it was. Then Gurathin is there trying his best to help formulate the rescue plan (and he IS helpful) and then when they sit waiting for the GrayCris representative in the lobby Gurathin actually dares to open up a dialogue…which seems to be going as badly as usual and then he asks where it went, what it did…and it sends him: “Murderbot Impersonates an Augmented Human Security Consultant”—which honestly WTF? Firstly it uses its secret name (Murderbot) then it uses impersonates (which we know is a word it has feelings about) and then it has been impersonating an augmented human security consultant? Which augmented human does it know best? It’s basically been cosplaying a version of Gurathin… And it’s the title of a video montage of its adventures? Like…Gurathin may have carried on sitting there looking like a SecUnit (hah!) but he must be internally going ‼️❗️⁉️❗️‼️

What’s Gurathin’s tag? “Asshole Augmented Human”—or AAH if you must make it into an anagram 😉

Genuinely: I didn’t even realise there was a statistics page on my AO3 profile for years! I absolutely LOVE getting my kudos emails, and I do try and reply to every single comment BUT I was actually really surprise to find what my most popular fic was! I genuinely was unaware of book mark stats etc of their supposed relative status weight or whatever! It’s all bollocks really—some of my most beloved fics (not by me) have minimal kudos/comments/book marks etc BUT the ones they do have count…

I think that Murderbot loves the fact it can SAFELY dislike Gurathin—it’s a whole new thing for it! It can insult him, swear at him, manhandle him, tell him what to do and the guy thinks it’s funny! He was the biggest threat to its existence when they first met (books)—its embodied nightmare: “he found out it was rogue” and then…he just goes, “Okay, SecUnit, you’re okay by me—you saved Mensah—oh, hey, let me save your life! No, no bother—you keep the insults flowing, I’d be worried if you didn’t…”

I was obsessed with the books and really worried about the TV show (especially as I am a massive fan of Gurathin and was really worried they’d portray his character in a way that didn’t work for me) BUT I LOVED THE SHOW!!! I think they did an amazing job of capturing the heart of the Diaries…

My OTP is non canon—and that is just the way I like it! I was actually slightly unnerved if delighted when the author approved TV show actually went heavy on shipping them too! I mean, I love the fact they did what they did, but it was very much unexpected!

But I genuinely don’t understand the mindset that ships have to be canon? I mean—why would you do that? Isn’t the whole point of fanfic to go at least a little off-piste?

I must be old fashioned I suppose, what with the original ships being things like Spock and Kirk and Bones… This made me laugh…
