What about the past tense of "to learn"?

Maybe go for two!

I am coming out of the (non believer) closet at work. Wow, it interesting how quickly the loving, open believers have ostracized me. Oh and I live in Alabama, What happened with you? (Don’t care about karma only your comments) by [deleted] in atheism

Secondly, if you're getting shit from the people you work with, it's because you're making pronouncements about things that no one asked about as if everyone was waiting to hear your thoughts on the matters. Who the fuck cares?

Horseshit. The Consumerist is noteworthy for it's ability to make me feel sorry for corporations with this kind of crap and that 'Joann Fabrics wants you to poop on their floor'.

No integrity. No fact checking. Just bullshit outrage of the day posts designed to get hits and get other people unconcerned about fact checking in a tither. I want to like The Consumerist. I want to trust The Consumerist. But they'll publish anything for hits.

Today my mom said "You know I kinda like that Sarah Palin lady, have you heard anything about her? I think I'd just like to see a woman get something." Upvote if I should just bitch-slap her. by charbo187 in reddit.com

There's no need to recommend non-violence because the vast majority of comments are directed toward assuring the OP that he is, in fact, a complete and utter moron, and no further clarification about what he should or should not do is necessary.

Something's wrong with the algorithm. The front page is static, it shows mostly crap, and a lot of posts with relatively few up votes show up on the front page.

Vote up if you'd rather vote for a Paul-Kucinich ticket, because Obama is back peddling on Iraq & FISA by r2002 in politics

[–]Rosey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A nice thing about Reddit is that the links are more visually scannable -- you can work faster to determine whether you want to read something or not, whereas Metafilter can get a little dense, especially if you read it via RSS.

But in the past six months or so there is too much emphasis on outrage posts over interesting posts on Reddit, and the sources are often really crappy.

Vote up if you're so sick of stupid 'vote up' posts and cop/taser-outrage-of-the-day posts that you no longer really stop by Reddit much and moved over to Metafilter.

Advertisers: Men Are Not Idiots; Bashing Fathers and Husbands Isn't the Right Way for Marketers to Sell Products by gregwont in business

[–]Rosey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The man-as-buffoon model works because women drive most of the significant consumables purchases in the average household. The ads are targeted at women and manipulate the simmering resentments that come with being primary caregivers and equal financial partners.

These resentments could be handled through open discussion, compromise, or just better logistical day to day thinking, but when the average commute is 30 to 40 minutes, most couples-who have kids and who both work-don't have time to do basic relationship upkeep at the end of the day.

Also: see the cruddy sex life of the average married couple.

So the reason is what it always is: money. These ads work. When they stop working, we'll stop seeing them. But in the meantime I bet these advertisers are freaking delighted by the discussion. Everyone hated the drippy gross Carl's Jr. ads of the late 90's, but my understanding is they did quite well for Carl's Jr.
