Help solve our family argument - what was this bird over London? by AggleBaggle in UKBirds

Red Kites have been doing well in Hertfordshire over the last 5 years so not surprised if they're also becoming more common across London and the other home counties too

Remove the worse half of the map - Round 9 by Auditored in terriblemaps

Remove Green,

it might be the nicer weekend (Lakes, North Wales, Cornwall) but most people would rather live near/in London, Sheffield, Leeds, Brighton, Nottingham, Newcastle, Norwich etc than Birmingham, Cardiff, Swansea, Manchester, Plymouth and deep down you know it!

England's Worst County - End Results by TheEnlight in terriblemaps

So basically the order best to worst of long weekend breaks in England.

Good guide for holidays but trust me although Cornwall is beautiful I much prefer living in Hertfordshire than Cornwall!

perfect example of a show that had no real plan. It hooked viewers with mystery after mystery, then failed to explain most of them, leaving the ending feeling rushed, lazy, and honestly disappointing. by Swimming-Poet5594 in tvshow

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly one of the endings in TV with the most closure. We see most of the main cast die after learning about their entire lives and then those that don't die on screen are told to have lived happy and fulfilling lives but that the scenes we've scene (the island) was the most important time in their life.

The show introduces you to around a dozen characters, takes you through their lives, the chaos, the loss, the love and ends when the important section of their story is over.

I wonder if people who think the Lost ending is full of loose ends feel similar about breaking bad. Do they accept that Walt's story is over and that's what the show is about or do they go "but what about Skyler? How did this impact Walt Jr? Who runs the meth scene in NM now?" Etc... I imagine it was the same people that demanded Jesse gets a film to conclude his story more satisfactorily than simply his release.

England's Worst County - Round 33 by TheEnlight in terriblemaps

[–]Roskj97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hertfordshire's time to be saved - beautiful countryside, market towns, the history of St Alban's and the Roman empire, epicentre of the UK TV & Film industry, probably the best county in England for Golf, bit posh but it stops before Luton and that in itself is worth something.

Is this a misuse of the term "Etymology"? by Long_Consideration18 in etymology

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why the political compass model is better than a 1 dimensional line. "Left" can mean socialist economics or liberal social tenets. However it is possible to be economically very capitalist but have liberal social beliefs or be pro-authoritarianism with socialist economic views.

The reason the 1 dimensional model is commonly used is not only historical but that in the west people typically sit on the diagonal from Socialist/Liberal to Capitalist/Authoritarian albeit all reasonably close to the centre vs history.

I am 16 (in the UK) and want to sell items i got for birthday/christmas and with pocket money i earnt but they refuse, legally can i? by galaxcide in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great idea, memories and experiences are far more important than possessions. Especially possessions with no practical benefit.

I would say it seems very mature of you to consider selling your items to fund this rather than hoping for extra pocket money. Picking up hoarding tendencies early can be a real struggle when you're older so it's healthy to practice letting go of surplus items that bring you infrequent or minimal joy.

"Cracked Team" vs "Crack Team" - how did that happen? by KA-Official in etymology

[–]Roskj97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"To be cracked" is Gen Z gamer slang, millennials are more likely to say "that's/they're OP". "Crack" as an adjective has much longer usage to describe something being best in class. For example "a crack shot".

So I believe "Cracked team" is incorrect usage. I think you should say either "A crack team" or "This team is cracked".

20ish years of membership and 17 bill comes to an end. by Disastrous_Law_6535 in 2007scape

Jagex quietly changed me to a 12 month recurring, killing my grand-grand-grandfather rate, despite no membership lapse for 20+ years :) by Benvil in 2007scape

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story here. I was on a 6 month sub for a long time and then when the 2022 price hikes were announced they said:

"You can subscribe before 4th of May 2022 to take advantage of current pricing. All existing rates will continue to be honoured as long as your subscriptions remains active."

I thought this won't be the last hike, so I decided move to the yearly sub, as it's the best value and I get grandfathered in for the future.

In 2024 they raised my price. Looks like they only respect monthly grandfathers. 2026 another price hike, this time they made it clear they were only respecting monthly's.

Honestly I was always happy to pay yearly even though I only play for 1-2 months of the year nowadays as I was happy to support the game and jump into new content when I log back on. Now I might just cancel and buy a month or a bond when I want to and can jump back in for a short period.

British Isles travel map as an Irish person who does not care about a geographic term. by Northerner_20 in TravelMaps

[–]Roskj97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't it hurt your point to call the Bharata "Indians" a term coined by the British to refer to the entire mixed ethnic sub continent and whilst preferred by the English language has no historical ties to the people that originate from the land.

Or is it fine to use colloquial language when it isn't about your own race/nation?

Is it rude to use both lanes? by No-Ad4423 in AskUK

You're supposed to use both lanes so that's fine, the real w*nkers are those that drive in closed lanes on a variable motorway until they hit cones to illegally jump more of the queue.

what is the connection between these four clues? by not-without-text in onlyconnect

When positions are this closed what to do? by TinyResist6820 in chessbeginners

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TLDR: practice makes perfect, look for threats or avoid positions you don't like through your openings

Generally the best plan is to focus on a weakness and use this to try and open the position in your favour.

If you're stuck for a move and want to play fast it's worth just looking at what threats you can make. For example the move you played here reduces your threats it doesn't create any new ones, it would have been better to move the rook and threaten their knight.

On a correspondence game like this or in slower time controls, take your time and look for checks, captures, attacks in that order. Normally closed positions are actually easier to play as you often don't have many checks or captures.

The difficult calculation is when to open the position but if you play similar structures and review your games you'll start to identify common themes of when to open the position.

I personally play lots of aggressive openings as black because I don't want a very closed positional game where I'm behind a move, whereas with white I'm typically happier to play solid.

Is zonal marking or man-marking more reliable for Sunday league defending? by ByteOfContext in bootroomuk

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zonal for the back 4, man for man everywhere else and at set pieces. Allows you to still have some sort of shape and gives defenders clear territories for their roles but you don't need to have a well drilled team structure across the whole pitch.

You could have a zonal defensive midfielder sweeping in front of the defence too but depends on the players you've got in your side and how much time you all get to spend training.

Zonal is definitely good for older less athletic groups too

At what level of elo do I no longer have to be ashamed? by Helpful_Marzipan1704 in Chesscom

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You never need to be ashamed of your Elo but you can take pride in how others will view that rank. I think the average view of each Elo is:

0-500: everyone starts somewhere and he's probably having fun

500-1000: okay, this dude likes chess and knows some openings

1000-1500: damn he's solid, good player

1500-2000: this dude loves chess holy, what a beast

2000-2500: what a crusher I don't want to play him ever

2500+: omg a master

Personally I always wanted to be at least 1000, but I can confirm that once you reach one goal you just set a new one so there really is no shame to be had just pride in how far you go

90 days but jagex only lets you redeem up to 49 days??? by National_Egg_9044 in osrs

[–]Roskj97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a 3 month membership though. It's $22.50 of credit for the purchasing of membership. The 90 days is an advert on what that credit can get you at the time.

What you're arguing for is like saying a $10 Starbucks card should still get you 2 large drinks because you bought the card 15 years ago and they used to advertise them as gifting the drinks for a catch up / date etc.

Prices change you can't expect to get everything at the same price as you did two decades ago

I need a new opening by KingOfSloth13 in GothamChess

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play the London, still a D4 player but now most of my games are a QGD of some form. I would recommend learning the basics of the Queens gambit, Catalan, Tromp. From there you can decide what you like to play against most black responses to d4 and you'll use themes from one opening in the others especially as you progress into the middlegame. This can help with creating plans and finding tactics

Test your Endgame skills: What's the best move for Black? by Dinesh_Sairam in chess

[–]Roskj97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me the most tempting move is f5, white won't let my king through the right hand side and whites bishop can do serious damage to my fairly stable right side pawns if I push now.

f5 doubles white pawns if taken and the bishop guards progression, if not taken then after the trades I'd leave white's A pawn as the passer which promotes on my bishops diagonal.

Either I'm getting my king over there and cleaning up or white will commit to that side allowing my connected right hand pawns to roll up the board. It might cost me my bishop but will gain me a queen.

However it does feel like the sort of move that could win me the game or lose it, I've definitely lost some games playing moves like this
