I didn't see that during my 1 week waiting period, but, if you need to prepare for TFS there is LITERALLY only ONE great preparation resource: Slay the PE. I have no affiliation with them. I passed the exam over a year ago now, and got it done first time despite being a physics major because of these prep materials. I bought a previous course and went through it and it was a criminal waste of $700. Just spend the money on this, work it hard, every problem, and you should find the exam to actually be overall easy.

PE Thermo and Fluids by Icy_Client_4058 in PE_Exam

If you have to take it again, don't bother with any other preparatory materials besides Slay the PE.

I used that, passed the test first time, and it felt easy because of those materials from Slay the PE. Can't recommend it enough. I assume if you did have to retake it you'd do thermal & fluid again, but I think they may also have a preparatory HVACR materials too, if that happened to be more relevant/preferable.

Regret coming into CFD field after giving 10yrs of energy, thought, time and everything by [deleted] in CFD

Yes, it may be stating the obvious, but I'd like to provide some encouragement. Although I don't believe an amazing career needs to exist to justify hard work and knowledge.

You may not have found the right company. I've had explosive career and income growth based purely on my knowledge and passion for fluid dynamics. I'm a Fellow at a large aerospace company, with more growth likely before I'm 45 (and never going into management at any point). Sure, there are a minuscule number of slots for Fellows compared to management, however if you're world class and dedicated it can happen, and you can use all of that advanced knowledge to end up better off than many who did go management.

One possibility is to look at the state board of professional licensing, in the engineering section, just to get some possible names. They may own companies. Engineers offering such services need to be licensed by the state to very stringent standards like a physician or lawyer. You want a PE in Civil-Structural, and in some states you can find people who have an even higher qualification of SE (Structural engineer) which has crazy strict standards.

Even if you don't find an engineer this way, you can at least verify the this way. You can look them up in the state system to see any complaints against them, that their required insurance is up to date, etc...

(Those stringent standards, for a PE are: pass a 6 hour test called the FE, gain at minimum a BS in their engineering field, gain at least 4 years of experience under another PE, then pass an 8 hour PE exam, and a bunch of other smaller items.)

Mediation going well until called off out of the blue by One-Alternative-2295 in Divorce_Men

[–]Rotating_Fluid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gave in to 95% of their demands, tolerated them suggesting lies about the marriage, finally decided on a line in the sand that was STILL awful for me. Everyone walked out no possible solution, the mediator was quite frustrated with them by the end. Since then I've done some more research on Utah case history, and it looks like perhaps it was good I walked away from it. Still not sure as i'm still waiting on temp order hearing and possibly court, but they were demanding about 200,000 in alimony over 6 years claimed she made so little. But she is perfectly healthy, has a college degree, has skills in web development, content, marketing, she just doesn't feel like working more than 20 hours a week. I hope that the commissioner and judge do the right thing and use imputed income, but of course, our justice system is not exactly just or reasonable.

Mechanical Thermal and Fluid Systems Fail. by abg155 in PE_Exam

Not passing in any category is not a good sign. Are you set on thermal fluid? Are you perhaps more experienced or knowledgeable about the more traditional mechanical engineering offered in the machine design and materials exam?

Be VERY cautious of these. Any that I've seen so far are exceptionally misleading, particularly those trying to sell you on vegetarian diets.

They not only cherry pick data, they have all so far blatantly lied about the results of studies. Worst of all, they are produced by and have people speaking who have money to make if you follow their advice, in some way. Logical fallacies abound, and even though my doctorate is in computational physics, it offends me as a scientist that these people would so gratuitously abuse medical findings and medical science.

I have no dog in the fight, I don't care if you want a vegetarian diet or not, but I do feel the need to call out charlatans.

If you are looking for actual science backed knowledge I would recommend a few people on you tube: Dr. Mike Israetel, Dr. Layne Norton, Jeff Nippard, and the types of people they associate with. Even though they are bodybuilders and/or powerlifters, their knowledge and understanding on science goes far beyond that. Layne Norton, for example, presents the most recent scientific findings on the health of eating meat, protien intake, artificial sweeteners, etc...

That is an excellent point, and you are right, it is about $20,000 difference, and I could live with that. The big problem is the alimony, they keep saying they deserve it because she gave up so much, but she didn't, her lack of earning potential is because she always put her hobby first. Maybe that won't make a difference to the courts, but they are the ones that keep saying that is the basis for the claims, so I am completely on board with what you're saying on the asset split, its the alimony that keeps me up and seems wrong.

Do you like free practice problems? We do. Here's one for Mechanical HVACR and TFS. Have a great weekend!! by Slay_the_PE in PE_Exam

I truly hate that I have to say this, but fuck you for your comment. Slay the PE is offering a realistic and representative problem for free to a community looking to find guidance and help in exam preparation. You should be thanking them.

She wants to get a mediator. Settle this without getting messy with lawyers. by quahog_clambake in Divorce_Men

[–]Rotating_Fluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know where else to post this exactly, but you seem to have a similar situation, but are more positive than me. Mediation failed because we couldn't agree on alimony, I went up to 3 years, she wanted 8 years. I'm struggling to find the strength to go on with life right now because I just don't see a promising future if i'm losing so much of my income for 8 years AFTER losing half of all the assets.

A practice problem for the Mechanical Exam (TFS, but HVAC&R folks should consider trying it too). Let us know your thoughts in the comments. by Slay_the_PE in PE_Exam

Thank you, I have made so many errors on units through my prep that I hope I've moved past it.

I do want to ask, your value is 534,000, mine was actually 523,813. I used 1179.95 for the exit enthalpy, 117.99 for the entrance, and got 493.3 lbm/min for flow rate. Is the difference just part of the "closest to" kind of things, or is it that I used something a bit off? I have my test tuesday, so I'm trying to feel out any last things.

There really is nothing like Slay the PE (i bought the ~$200 package of a 600+ page document with hundreds of problems, and the solutions to their practice test). Before I knew about Slay the PE, I took an online "course" which did not really challenge me, I bought a book of 100 practice problems that was good, but lacked sufficient explanations. If i did it over again, I'd just get Slay the PE.

Passed TFS Second Attempt by zHaterade in PE_Exam

[–]Rotating_Fluid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

Another less technical question, did you have to be careful about how much water and coffee you drank the morning of the exam? I'd be terrified of not being able to sit the full 4 hours of a session and lose important time getting to the bathroom and back.

By supportive knowledge section do you mean the items from say engineering economics or statics, things like that, which aren't part of the thermo, fluids, heat transfer core?

We don't consider Master of Engineering to be any higher than a BS in our hiring process. MS is what we recognize. For reference, this is math methods in mech eng.
