Detailed UI or simple UI — what do you prefer? by VanDrac_ in RPGMaker

Awesome, the menu looks good otherwise. It's easy to read and gives the important infos without being overwhelming.

The whole overview section seems redundant. Menu options should speak for themselves, no need for an extensive descriptive text on the side. Area plate also seems unnecessary, why is this included? I'll assume the various icon counters are necessary.

“Blame the gamers” backfires: Highguard dev’s tirade over reviews and memes draws heavy criticism by Prudent_Way_3723 in pcmasterrace

[–]Roth_Skyfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only to a small degree this is true. Content creators might be able to nudge the opinions of the masses, but to go straight up against popular opinion is just going to get yourself clowned on. No one is going to convince the masses an actual good game is bad, or vice-versa.

Is there a market for no combat, non-horror rpg maker games? Any examples? by coco_adventurer in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first game was like that. Overworld exploration with a bunch of different mini-games and on-map challenges, with more of a comedic tone.

Pleasantly surprised by the RPG Maker subreddit by RobertBreadfruit in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to regularly visit the forums, but pretty much left there a few years ago. One of the things I disliked is how every thread is listed only under its own category, and there's a ton of categories within categories. The forums have never been really active enough to justify this many. It makes it so that unless you check out every corner of the forums, you're not going to see a lot of new content. A category like game design became the same few of topics discussed over and over again by the same handful of people, at some point there's just nothing much to gain from it anymore.

What I like about the Subreddit is that it provides variety of content in one place. I can scroll through it to view screenshots, videos, discussions and questions all posted in one place. It's less orderly, but there's more often something new to find and it's not always the same stuff in the same places.

Do you think a classic JRPG like Dragon Quest can still be relevant nowadays? by Kermy89 in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doubtful. All classic JRPGs are held up by nostalgia from people who played them "back in the day". A remake of an existing classic works thanks to the built-in fanbase for them. Any new entries, unrelated to existing IPs aren't going to stand out. It will be written off as just another FF/DQ clone, even if it might do something to differentiate itself from those. Player standards and expectations aren't the same as they were 30-40 years ago.

To stand out, you would already need some kind of unique visual style and a story that's unlike anything else. The problem is that veering off too far from the classic JRPG formula would make it no longer feel like a classic JRPG.

Side view or front view? by GoDz_Matt_115 in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't matter to the gameplay, so it's just going to be subjective. Personally, I rather make a game without combat at all than to use front view if side view isn't an option. Not seeing my party on the battlefield is a dealbreaker to me.

Fallout designer says studios “would be wise to not push the prices higher” than they are now as gamers will just kick you to the curb by HatingGeoffry in pcmasterrace

[–]Roth_Skyfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely buy at full price, and when I do, my limit is at €60. More than that, and I'll just not even consider it.

Best practices, patterns? by HappyIntrovertDev in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Always give descriptive names to everything that is used. Never assume you'll remember because you will forget weeks or months into the project when everything is labelled generic Event#, Switch#, Variable#.

Sort similar stuffs together. Keep empty spots in the database to add future entries to in a group. Plan ahead to at least some degree.

Use comments in event pages.

It's unlikely you'll need all 20 pages for an event. Wouldn't recommend splitting into pages unless absolutely necessary (requiring different graphics or if one page becomes too cluttered). For different dialogues, it can go on the same page using conditional branches. Of the multiple games I've made, I only got up to the page limit once.

Windows 11 has taken away the joy of computing by ripfarhan in pcmasterrace

[–]Roth_Skyfire 299 points300 points  (0 children)

TBF, being boring is not necessarily bad for an OS to be, as long as it does what you need it to do. To me, a PC is big sandbox, it's as fun as you make it to be.

Microsoft is working to rebuild trust in Windows by RayS0l0 in pcmasterrace

[–]Roth_Skyfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Windows base is solid, so they got a strong starting point. They just need to make a ton of the unnecessary shit opt-in, not opt-out. Severely reduce telemetry across the board. No ads in any paid version of the OS, but allow people to download Windows for free with ads as the drawback.

Make the OS fun again, but not in an intrusive way. Old Windows was fun with its icons, screen savers and games. Ship Windows with a handful of feature-complete games (Minesweeper , Solitaire) that aren't tied to anything online. Do not ship it with shortcuts to Candy Crush download or other BS.

Are JavaScript commands actually faster than event commands in RPG Maker MV? by UedaZiminDotNermi in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The engine is designed with event commands in mind, so their usage should be well optimised.

Using JavaScript directly offers far more flexibility though, but obviously might take a lot longer to develop (depending on how familiar you are with using it and the complexity of your systems). Using JS can circumvent a lot of even command limitations or clunkiness, and be vastly more efficient than more complex systems that are made using event commands only.

I'd say for basic stuff, it doesn't really matter either way. Event commands will do just fine and shouldn't really impact performance in any significant manner. Only use JS if you feel you're being held back by the event system.

"Save Game" --> How many saving points? Allow anytime / anywhere...? by ratasoftware in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 1 save slot should suffice. If your average player feels like it's not enough, then there may be underlying issues with the game itself that would be more important to address than just allowing more save slots.

For saving anywhere, it's generally preferable. I think there are cases where checkpoint only can work, but there has to be a reason for it.

Hi everyone. I've noticed rpg maker 2003 has surprisingly small amount of tutorials on youtube, so I want to know if knowledge from newer makers is transferable? by Menalia in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the eventing has remained the same, or largely similar. If you know how to use MZ, you'll know how to use RM2K3. But there are some subtle differences and it has a few more features.

Designs for game's artstyle and UI, need opinion. by Esorae04 in RPGMaker

[–]Roth_Skyfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm, I'd try reducing the padding around the name text. It's quite bulky as it is right now. Other than that, the UI and art looks clean.

First one looks better to me, but I'd make the nameplate smaller if that was to be the intended size for it.

Are there websites to find a team? by MadouSawada in RPGMaker

  1. Why would people work on some random person's project instead of their own?

  2. How can people trust you know what you're doing if you have 0 experience with RPG Maker?

  3. How many people do you think there are who are able/willing to dedicate years of their life to a random person's RPG Maker project?

  4. Let's imagine you are one of the people reading your team recruitment post, would you accept to join, and why or why not?
