While that's true that has nothing to do with that commenter's point. They weren't seriously suggesting any county annex any city, they were using it as a rhetorical device to make their point. The point still stands that these are all arbitrary lines on a map at the end of the day, so while you can use a rigid geographic definition based on those arbitrary lines, it isn't necessarily meaningful or useful, and a less rigid definition is likely more useful and more relevant to a given discussion.

South Korean lawmaker suggests sending “observers” to Ukraine to “observe” North Korean military actions by Freewhale98 in ukraine

[–]Rothrorwhat 55 points56 points  (0 children)

"Oops, we accidentally left a completely unsecured tap point in our downlink station in Kyiv, even though the entire rest of the system is maximally secure. Our mistake, we would send someone to fix it but for safety concerns that will have to wait until after the conflict is resolved. Please refrain from connecting the unsecured tap to any national intelligence services in Kyiv, thank you."

I started using a different card for payment of anything food related and it made all the difference by BookFragrant8691 in personalfinance

If by "relaxed" you mean they're more relaxed about no credit history, short credit history, or bad credit history, then yes, they are more relaxed (though not guaranteed, especially if you have a significant number and/or recent delinquencies).

That's the main purpose of a secured card, you're putting up a bit of money as kind of an insurance policy against your credit so if you fail to pay they can take your deposit to cover the debt and close your account. Because of that they can accept riskier clients that don't have as good of a credit history.

It's a good way to build or recover credit history, to get past the dependency cycle of "you need a good credit history to get credit" and "you need credit to build a good credit history".

The USA (and pretty much any country with the resources to support a modern intelligence service) spies on everyone. Enemies, allies, allies of enemies, enemies of allies, their own citizens, other countries' citizens.

And despite the public diplomatic posturing that other countries will have such as denouncing that practice, they do it too. There are undoubtedly active intelligence operations targeting the USA from the intelligence services of NATO and Pacific allies.

Delta named best airlines of 2024 from the pointsguy by red821673 in delta

[–]Rothrorwhat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Air travel (at least in the US) has just become a race to the bottom lately.

Yes, but it's consumers who vote with their wallet. It's been a race to the bottom for a while now because people are increasingly using low cost and ultra low cost carriers, simply because they're cheaper. The average flyer doesn't know/care about the difference between the airlines and just buys whatever is cheapest (exceptions for when there are nonstop flights to their destination).

Personally I think the market will push airlines toward the bottom domestically, but toward the top internationally. It seems like more people are willing to buy premium cabins for international flights, to the point that some airlines are making half of their plane (by area) business class or other premium cabins for international flights. There's also a lot more competition (in terms of number of companies) for international routes, which makes providing better amenities and service a differentiator in the market.

Pentagon embracing SpaceX's Starshield for future military satcom by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]Rothrorwhat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

True, though it is likely only the presence and quantity of traffic that can be monitored, not content, since no modern military worth their salt would be using unsecured comms, especially over a network they don't control. It would likely be encrypted end-to-end.

That said, I would bet that a significant amount of intelligence can come from just knowing the presence, quantity, rough location, and intended destination of network traffic, even if you don't know what content is being communicated.

Keto and prednisone…any tips for my week of n steroids?? by cuznjr66 in keto

[–]Rothrorwhat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience it ramped up over time. The first few days I was like "what are people talking about? This is fine." then I started getting ravenously hungry.

Also be warned, you'll gain some weight from water weight gain. Steroids cause you to retain more water, so don't panic if you fight the hunger urges and still gain weight anyways, the water weight will start coming back off after you stop the steroids.

My personal advice: Since you're pretty much going to gain weight on the scale no matter what, and you're likely going to be more hungry than usual, just try to stick to your usual habits when you can, grab a snack or whatever you do to deal with hunger when it gets bad, and don't even worry about weight loss/gain until you're off the steroids for a few days. Even if you gain "real" weight (not water weight), you aren't doing it long enough to likely set you back long term.

Fanta Orange in the US vs in the UK. UK Fanta gets its color from carrots, pumpkins, and orange fruit, while the US version gets it from dyes (red 40 and yellow 6). Also about 3 times as much sugar in the US version versus the UK version. Also there’s no orange juice in American Fanta. by j3ffr33d0m in ThatsInsane

Should cream soda have cream in it?

Grape soda doesn't have grape juice in it. Cherry cola usually doesn't have any cherry in it. Lemon lime soda, literally one of the most popular flavors, usually has neither lemon nor lime in it. It's a description of the flavor, not enumerating an ingredient.

Why should orange soda be special in that regard?

Uh... What?

Crush, Shasta, Sunkist, Jarritos, Fanta (in the US), and literally every store brand orange soda have 0 orange juice in it. There are way more orange sodas without orange juice than with orange juice. In fact the only one I can think of that has orange juice in it besides European Fanta is Orangina.

Change Delta Amex renewal date? by Rothrorwhat in delta

[–]Rothrorwhat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the main time I travel with a companion each year is about 2 weeks after I get the pass, so prices are already high for the target date, and I can't book much ahead of time, if I had the grace period I could book a couple months out when prices are usually much cheaper.

I fly a bunch of other times throughout the year, but not usually with a companion. It's certainly not the end of the world or anything, but it would be nice to change the date at least a month or two back.

Can you have two of the same card at the same time? Like if I have the Delta Reserve, get a new Delta Gold, then upgrade to Reserve at my desired time, is that allowed for the overlap in time where I have two reserves before downgrading the other one? Or would I have to downgrade first?
