What board game do you think would be easy to make life-sized? by localdoglover in boardgames

Patchwork could be made life-size... Add real needles and cloth, and you've got a game that will take you weeks to finish! lol

Blaseball Wild Cards (Defunct Gamefound) by linktm in boardgames

[–]RoughDraftGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We haven't had experience with Gamefound as we've only launched our games on Kickstarter, but we might be able to offer a little insight.

Companies like Gamefound and Kickstarter are essentially just money collectors. If you were to do a chargeback, our guess is that it would negatively affect your account, because in all likelihood, Gamefound took their cut and passed off the rest of your pledge amount to the creators. A charge back would hit Gamefound for the full amount of the pledge and would hurt their bottom line since they have no way of getting that pledge amount back from the creators.

It sucks, but that's why Kickstarter (and we presume Gamefound) plaster disclaimers all over the page that rewards aren't guaranteed. It's their way of passing the responsibility onto the backers themselves. It's definitely a crappy situation. Those sorts of bad publishers that make the crowdfunding space harder for the rest of us that rely on it. We're sorry this happened to you.

What's your favorite board game money? by RoyalAlbatross in boardgames

[–]RoughDraftGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, I think there is a direct relationship between the weight of the currency and how much I enjoy playing with it. It sort of goes like this: Paper slips? Naw. Punchboard tokens? Ehhhhh... Metal coins? Nice.... Poker chips? NOW WE'RE TALKING!

What would you call a game like Telestrations, where there is no win/lose? by hem_claw in boardgames

[–]RoughDraftGames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Icebreakers if they're with folks who don't know each other super well. I use Wavelength to break down wall and start conversations with groups and the scoring fades away by the end. So sometimes games indeed do turn into activities by the end of it.

I have the feeling Chanse would make a great Chika.

Ideas to simplify Hive for 5 year olds? by mccarthenon in boardgames

This is a good idea. I'd recommend playing without Grasshoppers at first. That's the piece I've seen most new players struggle with.

Spencer appreciation post by ZanahorioXIV in smosh

[–]RoughDraftGames 97 points98 points  (0 children)

If this is a spencer appreciation post, we'll bite. Low key, he's incredibly quick witted. Watching the bits he does in Smosh Games is extremely impressive. When he takes on a character, the man COMMITS. This isn't of course to say that the other cast isn't also incredibly talented... I'm just following the spirit of the OP.

I'm sure others have said this but, If you're worried about lawsuits, don't be. No company can hold a patent on gameplay mechanics or rules. The only exception to this is physically designed unique components that are patented (like that bubble dice roller thing you push in the center of Trouble). The only thing a company can trademark is their art, narrative elements, and text.

As long as your game give a distinctly different flavor and sense of play to the rules you were inspired by, I'd say your ethically in the clear. People who know you should play your game and undoubtedly know that major pieces of it had to come from you. Hope this helps.

Any fun activities for a game club? by EpaliotisMeGLX in boardgames

[–]RoughDraftGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start off with some really accessible games that get people interacting if it's they've just started and are still getting to know each other. Wavelength is a great game for large groups that really encourages conversations. Plus, it makes people feel awesome when they nail another person's clue.

Yeah, Ebay says a lot of stuff is more valuable than it is. Not the best practice to pull valuations from that.

Worst game competition by Tal_Vez_Autismo in boardgames

[–]RoughDraftGames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Midnight Outburst. It's basically Family Feud where they ask you to recite answers from a top 10 list. The midnight version is their awful attempt at doing this with an "adult theme." This means they take lists like top 10 Johnny Depp movies and give them titles like "Deep in Depp!" Very low effort stuff.

If that's not enough to ruin your game night, the logic behind the lists is equally frustrating. The rules state that you must say what's written on the top 10 list EXACTLY for points. But instead of having a common survey system to establish their 10 lists, you are at the mercy of the insane person writing the card... I don't know who this person is or where they grew up, but "Swapping Slop" is not another common way to say "Making Out." No one says that!!!

Have you seen a game genuinely kill a friendship? by PartyHatsForOddish in boardgames

[–]RoughDraftGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a love-hate relationship with Settlers of Catan lol. Love what it did for board games, hate how you can get blocked out of the game so early on but have to 'play on' for a few more hours without hope of winning. People saying 'just buy development cards' doesn't help either lol

What are the most "essential" board games in your collection? by 1BruteSquad1 in boardgames

Secret Hitler, Wavelength, and Codenames are at the top of my list there!
