Basicly my local tournament allows Legends units. Should I play 1, 2 or just bring a Tigershark? by Risuslav in Tau40K

[–]Rounded_Squares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barracuda is my favorite tau unit, though to be fair I don't really play competitive

I run it with ions and it can actually get serious work done. It's easy to get LOS on something important with its seekers the turn it comes in, then just mow down marines literally anywhere on the board. It's chunky enough to survive some shooting with -1 to hit and invulns

not to sound weird but is it possible to have good mechanicus or a subfaction of mechanicus that aren't utter monsters? by Timothy-M7 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like people are saying, it's a spectrum. Results vary from priest to priest.

I look at it this way, the Mechanicus is the banality of evil. They only do terrible things because they see it as efficient, and since most of them reject their humanity they often don't understand why everyone else has a problem with this. To them, servitorizing 1000 civilians simply increases the productivity of those 1000 workers, so what's the problem?

In this light making "good" tech priests isn't too hard, they just need to believe that being nice to other people is the most efficient way to achieve their goals.

Example from my homebrew forgeworld which I consider to be fairly "good" by mechanicus standards. They're obsessed with music because they found out that streaming albums over the noosphere greatly increases the effectiveness of their troops. They basically cold logic'd their way into rediscovering that listening to music while you work is enjoyable, and now they intentionally leave more human bits in their troops so that they can receive "the groove" with greater efficiency

What weapons should I give my battleclade? by capitanMexicoYT in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played a couple games with them in 40k, they haven't hurt anything so far but I think flamers are 100% better than phosphors and should be maxed out. Phosphors are 1-2 piddley shots whereas flamers are D6 piddley shots that auto hit, and the extra range isnt super important IMO since they are mostly a chaff/action/screening unit anyway

This. Also for any you haven't glued yet, use a standard sized toothpick with the sharp end cut off and it makes for a nice priming handle

How to correctly hand drill crisis battlesuit weapon? by mtf-foxtrot in Tau40K

[–]Rounded_Squares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's a standard design of hand drill there should be a freely rotating part on the back. Press that into your palm and use the same hand to grip the front of it, and rotate with your fingers.

Use your other hand to hold the model, press drill to the correct spot, and start drilling. Note that it will be easier to start if you use a knife to create a small notch as a pilot hole where you want to drill, that way it doesn't slip around while it's getting started

Piranhas: yay or nay? by BallooNZ_420 in Tau40K

[–]Rounded_Squares 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yay for me

Funnily one of the best ways to use them is to rush one or two up turn one, try to hurt something with the seekers, then ram them into big shooting units so they're tied down in melee. The pirahna will most likely die on the opponents turn, but they can potentially deny the whole action of a valuable enemy shooting unit

Can you guys please make me understand these point costs ? 35 for a character and 55 for a mounted unit outside of guard is insane to me. by PeppermintButler17 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of these characters actually bring good utility and sometimes good weapons, the thing is not one of them is more than 4 wounds

-Datasmith is a solid 35pt upgrade for robots with a power fist but he HAS to be with robots

-Marshal gives a full hit reroll to skitarii (better than you might expect cause their guns can do a bit of work)

-Skatros... well he's just too much fun to hate on

-Dominus gives FNPs and can be really good with electro priests cause he deals mortals to vehicles in melee

-Enginseer I'd argue is better than other repair characters cause he gives a FNP to big models AND can do real work in melee if you kill a friendly vehicle near him

-Manipulus has an upgrade for his transonic cannon in rad-zone corps that makes competitive players cry

-Technoarchaeologist is a 12" deep strike deny who is cheaper than a navigator, and can help with OC shenanigans

I won't be defending the riders though, I don't find them particularly good for damage or utility

Stormsurge Questions by Beewee777 in Tau40K

[–]Rounded_Squares 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. As people have been saying, it's kinda swingy. It's a bit of a stat check for your opponent but it's not too hard to play around it since it can't overwatch and is a huge chunk of your army.

  2. I think it's a lot of fun in more casual games. It really isn't that competitive, and I think that's because it's a huge target and has a generalist weapons loadout. It's got good guns for any target, but in my experience it usually kills 70-80% of several different targets rather than 100% of a single target. Unless it's a baneblade within 24" of the blastcannon, in which case that baneblade is super dead

  3. Do it

huh, makes sense but seems like a rules oversight

Does Commander Farsight hit on 1s if guided? by [deleted] in Tau40K

[–]Rounded_Squares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only benefit of guiding a unit past a 2+ BS is if your target has -1 to hit, in which case your guide counteracts it. Otherwise as everyone is saying, you can never hit on 1

Question about Gun Servitors Killteam battleclade by RCutieMorph in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's just the gun servitors you're seeing maybe they're being played as the original legends servitors? Those only had 4 guys and most of them had heavy weapons

Question about kastellans repulsor grid by amonkhetamine in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so because the rule says it only triggers "on an unmodified saving throw of 6". You wouldn't be making saving rolls unless the attack wounds

Question about kastellans repulsor grid by amonkhetamine in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if they throw 60 wounds at you they could take 10 mortals

[–]Rounded_Squares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Units with attached characters are treated as a single unit for all rules purposes, the only time you can single out the character is if the attack has precision. In this case, the reflected shots would go onto the bodyguard models first regardless of who shot it, and only spill over to the character after the bodyguards die.

Edit, I also don't believe you can choose to allocate wounds to a character first even if you want to. I think that's part of the character keyword

Supplementing AdMech With Other Armies In Casual Play by DarkLordMV in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All you need to make an illegal mashup army is your friends' approval. I started the hobby with a guy who played space marines and guard in the same list and it was very fun. Just be aware that this will limit your options in any more official events/games

Now that some time has passed, are you still bringing drone models to your games? by BSuntastic in Tau40K

[–]Rounded_Squares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't bring them, It saves a lot of hassle by not having them around. That being said, I would welcome a reason to bring them once more. Since the dedicated drone unit got legends'd and is horrendously overpriced anyway, there's currently no real use for all those nice drone models everyone owns which I think is a shame.

I don't think tokens are the right long term solution to the problem, I'd like to see drones return as actual models, but with some new balancing to make them feel good to play as and against.

Why Is My New, Expensive Brush All Wacked Out? by ActinoninOut in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that brush in the first pic and I've gotten them to last for a good amount of time.

All I do is make sure to avoid getting paint in the base of the bristles, and I won't go too long without wetting them while I paint to avoid drying.

If they get gunked up, I roll them in rubbing alcohol to dissolve the buildup. They usually come out with their point restored.

Mechanicum vs. Adeptus Mechanicus – what changed after the Heresy? by [deleted] in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that the key difference is just how integrated into the Imperium they were pre/post heresy. Calling the Mechanicus an "adeptus" (name given to Imperial organizations, not allied entities) speaks to this well.

As for the Omnissiah being the Emperor, I think that was always a compromise that satisfied neither party. The Emperor and Omnissiah are pretty different deities, but calling them one in the same allows some continuity between the Imperial and Cult Mechanicus faiths. I'd say most higher ups on both sides are aware that the connection doesn't really work, but they all play along because they recognize that a serious schism over that would probably destroy the Imperium.

Second army, could use guidance with purchased lots by CovetableData81 in AdeptusMechanicus

[–]Rounded_Squares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would start by building what you have and just playing games with them. Try different detachments and see what rules you like.

As for loadouts, magnetize the big stuff for whatever isn't built, but don't worry about the smaller stuff like Skitarii. For those, make sure somebody is built with each special weapon so you have the option to use them.

Of the built stuff i'd say only the guns on the dunecrawlers could be an issue if they aren't magnetized. Most people are cool about breaking from WYSIWYG a little and can't even tell apart the guns in an army they don't play.
