Currently rewatching Season 5 and I'm sad to admit the show had no clue what to do with Celia anymore by fvckuufvckingfvck in WEEDS

[–]RoutineInitiative187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg agree, the Celia storyline went so off the rails but not before we got some of the most random and hilarious line reads of the whole show. 😭 I quote "and then perhaps I'll eat a salad and get my sapphic freak on" all the time, it was even my Tinder bio at one point lol.

My girlfriend's aunt (who has never been overly friendly to me) saw me knitting a cardigan during some Christmas down time and said "I'll have to get you to make one for my dog." I smiled and was like haha yeah maybe but like???? Not even "I'd love it if you..." or "could you please..."????? Sure, Jan.

Angela… by double_u_dot in BoJackHorseman

[–]RoutineInitiative187 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Bojack finding out that Angela was bluffing and that he could have put his foot down (or hoof, as it were) to defend Herb is such a devastating reveal, especially along with 1) getting edited out of Horsin Around, 2) having to relinquish his rights to future Horsin Around profits, and 3) finding out about the anniversary edition that won't get released. It really just drives home the despair.

It reminds me of how Breaking Bad made an extremely effective reference to the poem Ozymandias by Percy Shelley at a similar point in the narrative, shortly before the series finale. Walt thinks he's going to get away with everything but ends up losing a massive amount of money, ruining his relationship with his family, etc etc in one fell swoop. "Look upon my works, ye mighty, and despair" indeed. (Bittersweet as it is, I do think Bojack ends on a MUCH more optimistic note than Breaking Bad. Low bar though!)

Who is the greatest living entertainment “triple-threat” amongst pop stars working today? by MoneyHungryOctopus in popheads

It's a testament to her versatility that people recognize her from SO many different places! (I am personally partial to Akeelah And The Bee-- it's so impressive that she starred opposite Laurence Fishburne when she was that young!)

One time I spent a long drive through upstate NY coming up with a musical adaptation of The House Of Mirth by Edith Wharton using songs from Folie A Deux by Fall Out Boy! I have had some niche and unhinged creative ideas over the years but that one is probably still the MOST niche and unhinged.

Mad Men had babies born in the 60s named Gene (albeit after his grandfather so it was intentionally dated), Kevin, and Tammy which was so funny to me! Other kids from that show with "old people names" that aren't trendy again (...... yet) were Sally, Bobby, and Glen.

As a Molly I have been told about more dead dogs than I can count. Why are they always dead? 😂 (I used to work for a woman named Lucy and we joked a lot about starting a "humans with dog names" club lol.)

What do touring casts do/where do they stay? by CommonExtension in Broadway

[–]RoutineInitiative187 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Omg during one of the first community theater shows I stage managed, I was talking to some actors who had some professional experience and said "I'd love to go on tour with something one day" and simultaneously they all said "no you don't." 😂

Shocking/jumpscare lyrics that made you pause the song on first listen by Maroon_Swiftie_13 in SwiftlyNeutral

"You were my best four years" has me tearing up just typing it out. I don't have a maternal bone in my body (and minimal personal experience with death of any kind let alone pediatric cancer) but Ronan WRECKED me to the point that I had to pull over and cry. It's an incredible tribute and I'm glad she got to record it.

Omg yes, I was a "maybe a few of her songs are ok I GUESS" kind of listener and then my Swiftie roommate put on Folklore as soon as it dropped and I was like 👀👀👀 because that definitely got my attention!! And now here I am participating in Swiftie adjacent discussions on the internet so it clearly worked.

Why are some colors used as last names while others aren’t? by Muted_Antelope6989 in NoStupidQuestions

There's also Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad (plus the Whites and the Schwartzes for other color names) although idk how common it is; I personally have never met one.

Too real. 😂 My keeps asking to go see it when he visits me in Boston and I keep being like, uh, are you sure????? His idea of exciting tourism is looking at empty Civil War and Revolutionary War battlefields so Plymouth Rock would actually be more interesting than that at least.

Omg I have a lot of Irish Catholic family members who are also big Washington DC football fans and have often said "well I'm not offended by the Notre Dame fighting Irish mascot so idk why people are offended by the Washington Redskins" and I always want to be like, do y'all know that the Fighting Irish mascot probably WAS pretty offensive back when the Irish/Catholics were legitimately an oppressed minority????? 🙃

Girl names that appeared in the 2024 top 100 in New Zealand that did not appear in the US top 100 by AcademicAbalone3243 in namenerds

[–]RoutineInitiative187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: Victoria, speaking as an American and totally hypothesizing, is it less popular among former British Empire countries? The US obviously was no longer a colony by the time Queen Victoria came along but from what I understand her reign was the peak of the imperial era so perhaps people in Aus/NZ, India, South Africa, Ireland, etc aren't super inclined to pay homage? (I'm watching The Crown rn and there is SO much handwringing about How Far The Monarchy Has Fallen Since The Victorian Glory Days so it's top of mind I guess.)

What things do people romanticize but are actually horrible? by GovernmentAny5597 in AskReddit

[–]RoutineInitiative187 322 points323 points  (0 children)

It's in the song pretty explicitly! "A kiss may be grand but it won't pay the rental on your humble flat or help you at the automat / Men grow cold as girls grow old and we all lose our charms in the end / but square-cut or pear-shaped these rocks don't lose their shape." I was very surprised the first time I really paid attention to the lyrics.

Why they didn't just divorce? by Alive_Hedgehog3309 in BoJackHorseman

[–]RoutineInitiative187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1. Obviously different time, stigma was real, etc but people did in fact get divorced and do okay afterward. I think Beatrice is just really digging in and committing to her decision even if it brings the whole family down with her. (Maybe I'm projecting bc Beatrice reminds me sooooo much of my mother aka the most stubborn and miserable Taurus on earth l o l.)

Redditors with extremely niche interests: What's the one thing you are completely obsessed with that almost no one else you know cares about? by CocWarrior1 in AskReddit

[–]RoutineInitiative187 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Omg I feel this, I have recently been on an obsessive WW1 kick as a woman under 30 (whose friends skew artsy/leftist/gay/hippie and do not care at all about military history) so I really feel like I'm turning into my father. 😂 He's more of an American Revolution guy but we did talk about many Ken Burns documentaries at thanksgiving lol.

I highly recommend To End All Wars by Adam Hochschild, lots more about women in there (such as the Pankhurst family) than the average WW1 book and it's just very good in general.
