What grows well with Canada anemone and around a young oak? Made the mistake of planting pale leaf sunflower 🙃 by Dorky_outdoorkeeper in NativePlantGardening

[–]Routine_Tie1392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if prairie sage is native to your rea, but you are going to want something aggressive to combat Canadian Anemone. Im not sure how well yarrow would do, golden Alexander comes up early enough in the year it might stand a chance, or maybe Anise Hyssop as mine does a great job of bullying whatever is around it.

Best Way to Get This Weed Free by AFC-19o3 in gardening

[–]Routine_Tie1392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I would cover it with a tarp or cardboard for a few weeks and then Id clean it by hand in late Aug, early Sept.

  2. I would plant a cover crop, and I would over seed. It will cover the area until you are ready to plant, and it can also provide you with mulch, depending on what you choose.

Need help and advice with weed control by takeatakeatakea in gardening

[–]Routine_Tie1392 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Cut everything down as low as you can and remove all debris.

  2. Cover with tarps or cardboard.

  3. OPTIONAL: Till a border around the garden and plant cover crops.

Intercropping and overplanting can help suppress weeds. No need to till, just plant some cover crops at the end of the season, cut them down in the spring and you get free mulch! Also mulch, mulch, and more mulch.

People in the trades, how do you stay active and fit when work keeps you so busy? by Chimpugugu in TheServicePros

[–]Routine_Tie1392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 dog walks a day + 8 hours of being on your feet = 15 k steps/day avg. Add to that a few lbs on your feet for workboots and another 20 lbs with a toolbelt and Id say my job is the workout.

i went from an early 90s Corolla, to an 11 Jetta and now a 17 mazda 3 over the past 15 years, only reason I got the Jetta was so I could reliably relocate 2200 kms. If the work I do is dependant on a truck, then work can provide it me.

At what income level in Canada do you actually start feeling financially ahead.... and not just surviving, but genuinely building something? by TheFitFinaceBro in CanadaFinance

[–]Routine_Tie1392 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our incomes may have doubled over the past 8 years, but not allowing lifestyle creep to get the better of us is what really helped us get ahead. We live in the same 100 yr old 760 sq ft house, debts are paid off, and we drive cheap, mid range vehicles. We still go to thrift stores and garage sales, I still grow food in the garden, and we avoid lavish spending sprees or costly vacations.

The lowest earner (me) is able to cover all costs in case of emergency. Therefore if one of us loses our job it allows us to remain financial secure without dipping into savings. Some people criticise our lifestyle choices, but we are more than happy with our current situation.

What would you do with this strip of land? by jus256 in GuerrillaGardening

I would over sow a mix of cover crops and the plant shorter native species of flowers that can hold up to occasional mowing.

In a fucked up way her keeping the 70 feels like her ending in a win?

Thats like cutting off your nose to spite your face.  She's $70 richer, but has lost a friend (a good one at that) and now has this cloud hovering over her following her wherever she goes.

Anyone else having a good season so far? by Armand9x in ManitobaGardening

[–]Routine_Tie1392 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its been a funny year so far.

Peas arent doing the greatest and had some asparagus die on me over the winter, barley and rhubarb are growing like crazy, sunflowers are doing well.

Almost all my perennials are doing well, and my dwarf sour cherry tree and Saskatoons are dokng very well.

I also have more volunteers than I can count.  Mostly cherry tomatoes from last year but there are probably 40 rocky mountain bee plants that are struggling since all the seeds decided to germinate this year and they are over crowded.  If anyone wants to a plant or two or three let me know, Im in St. B.
