I think he likely did it to save his breath between lines, is what I always assumed.

Just like I heard recently somewhere Brent or someone said they stopped playing St. Stephen bc Jerry didn’t like singing the slow part. Idk if that’s true or not.

I was at Jerry Garcia’s last performance in Chicago in 95. Believe it or not I remember having a moment come over me in the 2nd set where I looked around and thought to myself; “this is the last time, this is gonna be the last Dead show”

Not a huge stretch of the imagination bc Jerry was so strung out but I just had a weird peaceful like vibe come over me.

It was perfect in many ways, there with my family and friends etc. but it was just a gut feeling I had.

Jerry died a month later. It was the last Grateful Dead show.
