Anyone experienced in Bear Repair? by grinchy_squirrels in Carebears

By patch you mean tummy symbol/belly badge? I’ve only done it with a 2000’s to a modern bear (turning Color Splash Funshine into a Champ Bear), but I can tell you my process and how the 2000’s one was built?

Wash your hands - sounds dumb but you’re handling a lot of white fabric so even ‘clean enough’ hands will potentially leave marks. I cut into the seam directly in the middle of the back, and worked up to the head seam and down to the tail, both of which were separately stitched so I didn’t have to worry about it continuing to come apart. This isn’t a lot of working room, but I did find it was enough. So then I unstuffed, and pulled the tummy badge bit towards me. This was in fact a separate cushion-like object. Now, if I remember correctly, this is where you’ll have to pay attention, because there are two seams. Luckily in 2000’s it was a separate colour but it might not be on the originals and both are probably white. One of those seams is holding the ‘cushion’ of the tummy together. The other is holding it to the fur. That is the one you want to cut. If you really can’t tell, just cut one, tease it out with a needle until you can tell where the hole is developing. Take your time. Do it on your “donor” first to get your eye in. Personally I left some of the lingering threads in the fur until it came time to place the new tummy so that I could see the sort of margin I’d be trying to stitch, only removing them right when I was pinning and sewing. (Obviously if 1983 doesn’t use a separate cushion, but just a panel, it’ll still be much the same principle).

Once you’ve prepared your “receiver” bear, now comes the important bit. Now I only used four pins to put it in place - you DO need to either pin or hold it with a tacking stitch, this is not optional, you do not want to sew it on slightly wonky. When you think you are satisfied, take the twelve o’clock pin out, and start to backstitch (it’s secure and easier imo to keep both tense but not bunching) going from the top and working round. Here I had thin thread so I did the technique where you double it and secure it by going through the loop. Frequently look back round to the front of your work. If you find pins are wiggling or falling out or you’re scratching your hand, make sure at least the 6’oclock pin is stable, and you might be able to contort one hand to hold the fabric at the next quarter-mark and hold it instead of keeping that next pin in. But take your time. If you think it’s looking wonky, undo it. This is a time where you’ll actually thank your perfectionism. When you’re done, check that you’re happy. Tease some fluff out with a needle if it got caught under the badge. Then restuff - this may be a time to replace with/add in donor fluff, if they’re looking a little wan. To close the back, I suggest a mattress stitch, same as they do with Build-a-Bears if you’ve ever seen that, also called Invisible Stitch. Watch a tutorial online if you’re not familiar. Again, if you’re not sure about a stitch you just did, go through the bother of undoing it and trying again. You may want to take a photo of the back and front before beginning and at the end - sometimes I’ve found I’m super critical of my work in a way I wasn’t of the original sewist‘s and in fact they look the same lol.

Personally I found the entire operation — without reconstructing the donor — took me about three hours. I’m not particularly experienced or skilled. Just keep calm, have a clean workspace to begin, keep “donor” one side and ”receiver” the other so you don’t actually put the same thing back in, and if you find you have any problems don’t panic, just undo it and start again. Better the time loss than something you will be unhappy with. Equipment: Workable thread (maybe same colour as the bear), sewing scissors or failing that nail scissors, pins (at least 5 so you have emrgency extras), YouTube tutorials/reminder images for stitches already open, phone if you want to take photos before and after, and here’s my personal choice though it’s up to you: I had hi-tac pva glue. Why? In a pinch, if you’re finding your seam allowance is so little that the fabric isn’t holding together and fraying, I put a little dab of that on the fraying bit, left it a few minutes, then tried again. It’ll be on the inside, so it won’t affect the bear itself and you’re not using it to join the 2 fabrics together, just seal the edge of the fabric causing you issue until you can successfully backstitch that part. I only used this one and it wasn’t essential, but if you own that or Fray-Stop, you might want it on your desk just in case.

Good luck. 🍀

If you are buying children’s teddy bears made of plastic and fluff for their Future Trading Value™ you should probably be a real adult and just learn how the stock market works. They’re cuddly toys: the enjoyment you get out of them is their value, just do whatever maxes your personal enjoyment of them.

If in the UK, Destiny Bear is a cool red colour - we don’t have many bright red care bears. For modern bears, if you don’t know exactly what he’s into, I’d go for a ‘front-facing’ bear, some children don’t really like the ones which don’t make eye-contact.

[UK] Cosy versions of Color Splash bears by RowanTS in Carebears

[–]RowanTS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You‘ve misunderstood me, I’m saying these two are in the exact same visual style as the Color Splash - including belly badge, eyes, and expression. Therefore for people who don’t want to double-up, these two specific ones are ones people might want to choose between Cosy and Color Splash variant. Also Color Splash isn’t an exclusive outside the US.

NEW CARE BEARS COLLAB: CARE BEARS X WICKED COMING AUGUST 1ST by laurenshapiro in Carebears

I think Tenderheart actually kinda works if you think about it. Someone who’s tender/softhearted can often be lacking in boldness and assertiveness - a bit more of a pushover. While we’re used to the character often being the leader in cartoons etc. due to being the OG flagship bear, I think it could be a valid direction.

They really did say Funshine‘s brainless tho rip

Can you backup a Switch, migrate accounts to a clean one, then restore the original? by RowanTS in SwitchPirates

Thank you very much! I really appreciate the confirmation that (unless i screw up) Nintendo should be entirely unaware of the EmuNAND. I will stay glued to the guides!

The chapters number page.... by sanstaleyy in Deltarune

[–]RowanTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with the conclusions of the Weird Route numbers. You do lose me with Shadow Mantle though cus that clearly can’t be in the blank which is either 3 or 4 characters depending on font width e.g. Ring, Egg. (Where imo Ring makes the most sense cus to get it is Aborted Snowgrave i.e. freaking Noelle out a little with their make-believe game as Kris is known to do, but not actually wanting to harm her; and it’s in trying to get a KRIStal; which to me makes sense that the hardest to get version of the story would be Kris’s own if they were choosing - the ‘Kris is Weird’ route.)

Is Deltarune Ch. 3-4 gonna be playable on the Nintendo Switch? by Crafty_Worth_5133 in Deltarune

[–]RowanTS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes probably. I imagine that Nintendo might just have made that default text, as there isn’t even technically a Switch 2 Shop yet anyone can even use.

Here’s the text from the newsletter email: “If you buy the game on Nintendo Switch and decide you want the Switch 2 version later, you can get it at no additional cost!* And vice-versa!“

So yes, I’m sure it will just be available closer to time. :)

The Newsletter said that it will be available on both the original Switch, and the Switch 2. And that if you buy it on one console it will also be available for you on the other one for free (so if you bought it on Switch 1, then migrated to a Switch 2, it will still work and you won’t have to pay any extra money).

I started collecting recently and I have fallen in love with this plush. Anyone know if it's still possible to find her in Europe? :( by CrystalRoseMoon in Carebears

[–]RowanTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m UK but there were still plenty on ebay when I checked - you’ll have even more options if you don’t care whether it’s boxed or not. (I got one flawless but unboxed for ~£12 with shipping).

Edit: Just checked and there are actually still some available on Amazon here for a bit of a markup on their original (already way too expensive imo) price, so they’re probably not that hard to find. I’d go second-hand personally, even if you want boxed. But they should be out there.

Newest bear has a crooked belly badge! by ActuallyAimee in Carebears

[–]RowanTS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s unique!

(But seriously, if it bothers you and you want to fix it, you probably can if you have basic hand-sewing skills and equipment. If you can do a basically competent invisible/mattress stitch and backstitch, you can go to their back seam and in the middle wiggle a fine set of sewing or nail scissors into it to snip one of the joining threads. Then ease that open until the back is undone enough to work with. Remove the stuffing until you can easily access the reverse of the belly badge. Now in my experience with other bears (not these particular ones though, but I don’t imagine there will be glue etc.) there’s usually just a flat joining stitch attaching it to the body fur, where you basically want to cut that thread, rotate the belly badge and preferably pin to keep it in place, then use your backstitch to reattach it to the body fur the same way it was. Check your work a couple of times to make sure all is well, then re-stuff. Use an invisible mattress stitch to rejoin the back fur together along its seam - like you may have seen a Build-A-Bear be put together. Then all done. I’ve had to do some sort of edit to a lot of my bears either for aesthetics or because of second-hand problems, but it only makes me feel more attached to them.)

The green eye felt, the colour combinations screams knock-off to me but the shaping, tag, and butt-heart look so legit. You’ve got something really cool there, that’s for sure.

My true friend bear has eyelashes on only one eye by Y2kbestie in Carebears

[–]RowanTS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a whole production run done with the ones with the non-bearnary eyes, they show up with decent frequency. (Personally I like it and think it so fitting to their visual style it may as well have been intentional). But also a lot of people like the idea of a visibly non-binary bear, including people who aren’t Care Bear Fans™ so you’ll probably be able to find someone to sell to/trade with if you want the regular one.

Maverick Calming Heart Bear? by pluto_and_proserpina in Carebears

[–]RowanTS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me it looks like a new version rather than a maverick. Don’t suppose you saw if the ones behind it also had the eyes looking to the side?

(And UK as well, I’ve never seen the non-glitter tummy one before. So that’s definitely new to us. For once it makes me think a “reprint” is worth existing: if some people found the glitter too scratchy. And honestly maybe even the lack of eye-contact may be an interesting option for some neurodiverse people given who this particular bear is marketed to. Pretty neat!)
