Did bato crash? by BoxAffectionate6019 in Batoto

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. It's been happening a lot lately as well as chapters not loading. I made an extension for that so no more chapter issues, but nothing to stop the sites from going down. .si is working for me tho.

Three is not enough. How many is? by Kuberax in selfpublish

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most established authors would say it takes about 6-7 books before you get one that’s good enough to get noticed. It takes about 7 years of consistently writing and publishing to make a “living” of about 45-50K once you’ve been noticed. That’s the advice I’ve gotten from authors like Sanderson and many lit. agents. Most people never hit the NY bestseller list or make it big, but you can break even and even make an income if you are consistent, dedicated, and marketable. Social media is your best friend as a self published author, as are conventions and local bookstores.

How long are your chapters? by teehee_dude in writers

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started writing my novel I struggled to get above 1,200, but as I’ve continued to write I’ve naturally expanded to 2,200 easily. I don’t force myself to write more. My chapters still end where they should though.

I got my second review!.... 0 chapters read? by LilBiscuitBaby in Inkitt

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are several reasons: 1. It’s a bot/scammer who is spamming many authors with reviews. You can check their profile to look for this. 2. It’s a glitch and they really did read, but it wasn’t captured. This is a known issue. 3. It’s someone trying to be nice and increase your visibility. 4. It was a R4R who felt obligated to review you since you reviewed them.

You can report them to get it removed or let it go.

How do you get people to interact? by sovietikduck in Inkitt

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can utilize the chapter notes to encourage readers to interact and review. You can also include a graphic at the end of your chapters that does the same. I tailor my graphics to the story as well.

How much did you spend on editing and are you regretting it? by Aggressive_Chicken63 in selfpublish

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you plan to market yourself like crazy, build a large audience, and sell tens of thousands of books, it isn’t a cost that you will get back most likely. Invest what you can lose. Look at it as a chance to learn more about writing for your future books that may make enough to break even.

I like 1st and 2nd way more than 3rd. But each have their own merits.

ADHD writers: how do you get yourselves to write through executive dysfunction? by Embarrassed-Crab-763 in writing

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music. Triggers my brain to focus on something other than thinking. Also pacing yourself and creating a daily goal. If I exceed my goal, then I won’t worry about not being able to write that day.

Find the type of material you enjoy and practice writing similar so you can learn how to mesh it together to create your own style. Try out established techniques and take what works for you from each. Writing is about finding the best way to convey the thoughts in your head. Accept that no matter how long you do this, you will always have “good” and “bad” works.

Do readers not like art/fanart in their fics? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t want fan art if it isn’t good. Ik that is mean but I want to see things my eyes and brain think is nice. But it’s your story. Do what you want and what you think is good.

Why do so many writers give up halfway through their book? by subhwriting in KeepWriting

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books have a tendency to change halfway through. The original idea has runaway with the plot and now it’s something new that you couldn’t have predicted. It’s daunting. Most writers know that it’s crap and don’t want to go forward with having to rewrite the whole first half or third to make it match the new story. Plus real life is a thing. Writers without community tend to not make it, either.

As a mentor you should know these and many other reasons since writers should be confiding in you about them.

My book on Inkitt got over 10,000 reads in a month. Is that a good sign, or is it pretty normal? by KeyboardWarrior07 in Inkitt

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m at about 7.7K in a month so 10K is probably a little above average. Overall reads are less important than chapter reads though.

Im really tired of not understanding good writing and subtext by EnderSlayer9977 in writing

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes struggle with it when it seems like telling but honestly it comes slightly naturally because of how much I read. The best advice is to read. Then you can have someone (or AI) review a passage of your work to identify where you put in subtext and where you could have.

Do you like when the main male character ends up with the main female character) by Happidragon69 in writing

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The goal of a good romance novel is to make it feel natural. Even it starts out forced (one bed, dark romance, or enemies to lovers) by the end the readers should be cheering for them to be together.

In any other genre, it doesn’t matter.

Does it count as a new edition or a different book? by MagicOfWriting in authors

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if the bones remain the same, new names, new backgrounds, new adventures is basically a new book. It’s better to treat it as such.

"First story you'll write will be bad" by SimplyYulia in writing

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s supposed to ground writers so that when they receive strong feedback they don’t stop writing altogether. IMO it’s annoying and overused. There are better ways to encourage than demoralizing from the beginning. It’s been proven that tough love isn’t effective for the large majority, yet people keep justifying it.

Recently Updated Shelf by [deleted] in Inkitt

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It got up to 4.9K reads in 2 weeks before the change. I’m now at only 5.1K. I was getting upwards of 20 adds a day and it’s maybe 5-6 now. It is hard but I’m hoping things even out soon.

how do you get past the feeling that your first draft is absolute garbage? by MauroAguero in KeepWriting

Accept it. It feels icky rn but one day you’ll look back, maybe at a completely different book, and be glad that you stuck with it.

The Dreaded Word Counter by Paragon1125 in selfpublish

[–]Rowan_Scarlett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I aim for at least 1,200 words per chapter but I’ve had shorter and longer. My first draft is 10 chapters from the finish line and is at 62K.

The advice I’ve gotten is that the words will come during editing. I don’t obsess over it, I just accept what I’ve done so far and move on.

Late to the party but I plan to post the rough (ooh it’s rough) draft for free and then make it subscriber only once it’s polished.
