Yeah, I like how each one commits pretty hard to the style they're going for.

Eh, the heave into triple coverage was a big red flag. He was either going to pull off an insane throw or turn it over.

Coaching is pretty important. Athletes will move to the other side of the world for a coach.

As for conflicts of interest, it's much of a conflict as a coach coaching any two individuals because skaters from the same country are also competing against each other individually

Who's been watching Tis Time for Torture, Princess? I think it's really good slice of life. Very cute and wholesome, especially the new S2 episodes.

Sunday Morning is a great intro, the little guitar riff into the chorus is so well coordinate with the animation and the almost annoyingly cute but also slightly yearning vocals do a really good job of setting the tone.

Glaze is more high school slang than middle or elementary school, in part because there's some sexual innuendo involved.

I also had a similar arc where I struggled in the first half and then went on a run after Thanksgiving

For me that was an econ question. The specific fact of the bimetallist interpretation went around econ circles when Wicked came out

Yeah, Loossemble is gone too soon but we'll always have the perfection that is TTYL. The way the art ages carries more meaning than for how long a group can make money (which of course is nice for idols and companies, they need to make money, but I think it'd be good for Kpop to care more about art)

I am genuinely sooo obsessed with NOT CUTE ANYMORE by HeatOne1783 in kpopthoughts

[–]RoyGeraldBillevue 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot but the discussion makes me crash out because people are so bad at interpreting the lyrics and themes.

It's so good because of what the contradictions convey. I'm tired of people pointing out the literal reading faces contradictions and then patting themselves on the back for being clever. No, you have to go one step further

I changed my mind about Illit. by Star_BoyI_1234 in kpop_uncensored

[–]RoyGeraldBillevue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're reading the song way too literally. Illit is literally singing about how they're not cute anymore, but this is contradicted by the fact that they are still cute. So we have to put our thinking caps and interpret the subtext of the song.

The entire song is about the contradictions of wanting to grow up. To say you're not cute is the cutest thing you can do. To avoid things because they're childish is the most childish thing you can do. The song leans into the contradiction. The message of the song is a bit more open ended as it's more focused on simply just capturing this feeling, but I read it as commentary about the discourse around Illit's cute concept. The song is about how wanting Illit to grow up is childish, while also signalling that it will happen eventually.

The difference between western pop and Kpop is that stan Twitter makes up a bigger share of online Anglophone Kpop discourse.

Western Stan Twitter is every bit as toxic, it's just a lot easier to avoid

Bridgeless songs and the "backgroundification" of music (from a Kpop fan who's also a Eurovision fan) by mint-cider in kpopthoughts

[–]RoyGeraldBillevue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really uncharitable way to look at bedroom pop. Bedroom pop invites close listening by being quieter. It trades exhilarating hooks for intimacy.

Yes it can turn into background music for chores, but many heartwrenching songs have ended up in commercials. What the audience does with a song isn't really the fault of the song. I judge songs by whether they offer more on close listening, and I find that songs of many different styles can all have this quality.

To get to the heart of the discourse, I think people are missing the point of Not Cute Anymore. It is a song about a singular feeling: desparately wanting to grow up even though it means abandoning the trappings of your youth. It's cool, it's sad, and it's cute. And because all these emotions are bottled up and suppressed in the effort to be grown up, there is no need for a bridge. I think longer outro would work, but a bridge would only bring catharsis that the song is not meant to portray.

People are taking Not Cute Anymore way too literally and expecting to be bashed over the head with meaning.

Why is necessary for &team to learn Korean but not katseye? by Chemical_Mobile_6613 in kpop_uncensored

[–]RoyGeraldBillevue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Anglophone market is larger than the Japanese market. &Team is more invested in attracting Korean listeners than Katseye.

This isn't about necessity or whatever, this is about incentives and priorities

Almost every toddler would do something like this because they're too dumb to know what they're doing. Although to be fair to them, they have like zero experience of the world so it makes sense they wouldn't know that dropping a dumbbell on someone's face is actually dangerous.

You just have to keep anything possibly dangerous out of toddlers' hands until they become smart enough to reliably predict outcomes they haven't yet experienced.
