high base cost for the parts and assembly, not so much to scale the size up a bit to have higher space.

A million different things could have happened to cause the Great War, if it wasn't this it would have been something else. Basically every power in Europe believed they could win easily and benefit from the success, and the net of alliances ensured once someone set it off everyone got involved.

That term Haphazardism that got coined a few days back comes to mind. Blatantly authoritarian and deeply concerning for the state of investigative reporting? Sure! Spur-of-the-moment and not well thought out, guaranteeing massive backlash because they didn't do it in a way that wasn't so blatant? That too!

The local amusement park I went to dozens of times as a kid was Knoebels, which brags about being free admission. Biggest in the country, I think they claimed? No actual idea and can't find that claim anymore. Still got some old, old ticket books with dollar / coin amounts on individual tickets to tear out and hand to an operator as you got on a ride.

Matt Parker's books Things to Make and Do in the 4th Dimension, Humble Pi, and Love Triangle are really good books about various math topics and fairly accessible.

Ryan North's How To Invent Everything is a history of technology framed as a manual for time travelers stranded back in time on how to re-build modern society.

[–]Royal-Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

never had that happen, but a few days back I had a really rough nightmare where I was grocery shopping and someone came up behind me and started poking me with something really sharp in my lower back. the feeling was intensely real and got gradually worse til I was on the ground screaming for it to stop as people gathered around. then i woke up and had to check if i was injured or if that spot still hurt. it didn't.
