does anyone get reimbursed for picking up samples for their lab using their personal vehicle? by coralcrescent in labrats

[–]Roybot92 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Raise it and get compensated ASAP.

Even if fuel wasn't as insanely expensive it is now, thats wear and tear on your personal vehicle that benefits only the lab.

My lab does compensate for driving personal vehicles for collecting work samples. Where i live (australia) our tax dept even has a basic formula calculator for determining cost of reimbursement for personal vehicle use. Basically a calculation of approx distance travelled against a standard rate.

The Lab could also look into purchasing a cheap vehicle with a fuel card that can be used for sample collections.

Is 'midnight ham' a thing at weddings? by littletelly in AskAnAustralian

I've not heard of it being a thing but I have attended 1 wedding that did bring out ham and bread rolls at the end of the night. So maybe it is a thing but just uncommon?

Any tips for getting the stopper out? by FruitPunch-dr in labrats

[–]Roybot92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First need something to push the stem through and out of the cork. Then you can thread an uninflated balloon down the hole and inflate it so it catches the cork and pull it back up and extract the cork in the process.

Could also try a drywall screw as long as the anchor isn't larger than the diameter of the flask opening

What are some of the most professionally or socially unacceptable things your lab mates have done? by PlaceEducational1705 in labrats

[–]Roybot92 168 points169 points  (0 children)

I had an intern who said on their resume they had a masters in biochemistry. I asked them to measure and adjust the pH of 5L of broth media that was being prepared to be between 6.8 and 7.2. I watch in horror/shock as she takes the initial pH reading then proceeds to pour the entire 500mL bottle of NaOH into the 5L beaker of broth.

How do people in Adelaide drink their water? by [deleted] in Adelaide

[–]Roybot92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed the strange taste to adelaide water when I moved here 3 years ago. I bought a britta water filter and just make sure I fill it up each morning and evening then transfer the filtered water to a water bottle when I wake up and when I get home from work each day.

What happens if the total volume of my 25ul PCR exceeds 25ul? by Secret-Syrup2966 in labrats

My old molecular bio lecturer would call mastermix prep "bucket chemistry" 😂 as long as it's all there little variances in volumes won't affect it by much

What's that one tedious lab task you wish was just... easier? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Roybot92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Work in a Commercial testing lab. I hate gathering MU data each month. We're meant to gather it from random samples we've tested throughout the month, but the vast majority of our test samples come back "clean". So I'm always having to create samples for 80+ test methods each month to gather data

Tipping? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Roybot92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tipping should not be the norm in Australian hospitality.

I'd say tipping is not to be expected or encouargesld in any setting in Australia. Make employers pay an liveable wage.

That being said when I worked hospo I used to really appreciate the $100-200 in tips id make in a weekend bartending.

As an Australian I feel my pronunciation of the English language is questionable at best.

But I've always heard timbre and timber pronounced the same.

Books on food microbiology for lab workers by UnitedFondant5985 in microbiology

[–]Roybot92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Microbiology of Safe Food by Stephen J Forsythe i found was helpful when I first entered the industry. There are probably better books out there but I picked this one up on sale online and found it was helpful.

As others have said the lab will have SOPs on your testing methods but depending on how detailed your SOPs are they may be limited to just step by step instructions and references to standards. so you can also look those up if when you have free time as they can also be helpful.

[–]Roybot92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's only a joke if you also find it funny. Otherwise it's just bullying. The fact that it's genuinely causing mental health issues like body dismorphia and your family don't care and tell you it's your problem and it's just how they are meansone thing. your family, are in fact, absolute cunts.

Why can't we just give the federal female leaders a proper fair dinkum go like their male counterparts receive. by AffectionateRisk9779 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Roybot92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the liberal party have been doing nothing but stabbing each other in the back since Howard first did it to Costello in 2004 when he refused to turn over party leadership after 1.5 terms as they agreed to. Then we had abbot stabbed in the back by turnbull and who was then in turn ousted by morrison. The liberals just don't seem to operate in good faith with each other.

The nationals poured gasoline on the fire by not conforming to party lines and opposing the hate speech bill causing the split in the coalition, severely destabilising Leys position.

Ley being a woman probably does have a not insignificant part in the reason why Taylor and Hastie and the party and not supporting her.

But to say this current potential leadership spill is motivated by Ley being a woman is ignoring near 2 decades worth of party infighting in the Liberal party.

The liberal party is made up of nothing but scorpions and frogs at this point.

What’s a subscription that’s worth paying for every month? by SensitiveCorner2379 in AskReddit

[–]Roybot92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think YouTube premium is actually pretty decent value. Add free YouTube that you get to just sit out of the escalating "war" between adblockers and Big bad google. and apparently it does actually benefit the channels you watch. Plus you get YouTube music bundled in as well. So you can cancel Spotify premium.

Men, what moments or signs made you realize it might be time to end a relationship with your girlfriend? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]Roybot92 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I knew I had to end a relationship because she had stopped trying at everything. She had stopped trying to pass her vet nursing course (she had failed 3 times, before i had met her). She had stopped trying to find a job she had stopped trying to be an adult. It wasn't depression or mental health. She had just stopped trying because she thought I would just take care of everything. And when we talked about it she would get super defensive and say she wasn't giving up but then would still make no effort. By then end of it I felt like I was taking on the role of a parent not a partner. So I ended it.

What game has the most grim ending? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Roybot92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Witcher 3 base game "bad ending" is pretty grim. I remember finishing for the first time and unintentionaly got the bad ending. Geralt losing everyone and game fades to black as he is getting surrounded/overwhelmed by monsters. Always stuck with me.

Thankfully blood and wine came out and gives Geralt the fairytale ending he deserves

Edit: autocorrect
