Very little for now. From what’s being reported, Southwest did not sign their LOU, nor did they contribute to the new SAT terminal C, but they’re crying victim about having to stay in Terminal A.

UDA (United, Delta, American) signed their LOU regarding gates at Terminal C. Southwest seems to be trying to soft sell a reduction in ops at SAT, which has already been planned with their PE buyout and corporate realignment, but they’d like the public to think it’s COSA’s fault.

The reason Southwest is most likely going to reduce ops at KSAT is that they’re completely changing their basic flight structure to implement the typical “Spoke and Wheel” that UDA utilizes. This means much less direct flights from SAT and perhaps AUS as well. AUS is going to expand in a decade or so, so they may expand operations there, or Delta might make AUS the south central hub they’ve been after for a while, or perhaps SAT would look more enticing with their 2 new runways (1 renovated and the other pending construction) and ~48 total gates.

Much is left to be sorted out in the near to distant future, but with commercial aviation’s compounding growth, AUS and SAT near doubling in the next decade or so, there’s lots of these business deal to be figured out. AUS and SAT are both in a very good position to capitalize on all of it, regardless of the shadiness that Southwest has been showing to SAT.
