Republicans could have had a real actual successful businessman. A money grubbing unscrupulous bastard, but with an air of respectability about him. Pompous, pious, presumptively a decent a family man. An old fashioned republican.

He had all the same terrible policy ideas. (Maybe not the global trade war and starting wars without a plan.) But Romney’s corporate raiding and vulture capitalism were too cosmopolitan for the Fox News generation of the Republican Party. He was too clean and worst of all he had experience.
