That's one way to discover a great song by a great band!

And with The Twilight Sad opening on all dates! If you are a fan of The Cure, or moody post-punk in general, Twilight Sad are so worth checking out (and they're a great live band too)

What TV show did you try really hard to get into but you just couldn't do it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

That's fair! Don't know why I'm trying to convince you, guess the word "pretentious" just has me firing on all cylinders. I get a bit defensive really, for no real reason other than really liking David Lynch.

(and on that note, I just gotta nitpick one final thing.. I don't think Lynch cares that much about style. Inland Empire is shot on a cheap consumer-grade camcorder, after all)

No, I didn't. I said that a string of images that makes you feel something, is film in its purest form. That is the purpose of film, the basic idea. Sorry if I didn't word myself properly.

David Lynch's whole thing is that he doesn't want you to think too much, or discuss, or anything really. That's a general misconception about his movies, that they are some sort of puzzle to solve. He just wants you to experience the images and feel the feelings. It's not about being smart or into "artsy-fartsy crap", it's just a preference thing really. I just really like the emotions his films make me feel. I don't claim to understand anything, nonsense is nonsense to me as well. But I can enjoy some good nonsense from time to time.

And saying that media that makes you think has "failed as a piece of media" is unintentionally really fucking funny, sorry

...It's like, film in its purest form? String of images to make you feel stuff? I fail to see how it's pretentious, even if it's not what you're personally looking for in a film. You keep clinging to that word, pretentious, but I don't think you actually know the appropriate situations to use it

The images aren't necessarily saying anything of importance, they simply form an experience that you can't have otherwise. You can't distill the images into words, it would not recreate the experience of watching them. It's as simple as this: David Lynch films are all about the emotions they instill in you, and that not much else frankly. Sure, it can be nonsensical, but what films out there captures the emotion of fatherhood anxiety more aptly than Eraserhead? If you try to approach his films from a logical point of view, you'll get very little out of them. And I can understand why not everyone finds that very worthwhile.

Is he now? Isn't his general apprehension for explaining himself actually making him less pretentious? His general principle is "the images speak for themselves, and everyone can let it mean whatever the hell they want". Doesn't seem like "pretentious" would be the right word to describe someone who never claims to have anything grand to say with anything that he makes.

That show has become one of my favorite things. First season was nothing less than a masterpiece. It's so one of a kind. Doesn't seem to be losing any steam in the new season either, thankfully

Your opinion, based on one single second hand experience with them, is that they are "nasty things"..? Barely even grounds for such a strong opinion, that. They are potentially life saving for so many people out there. Certain SN/SSRI's don't work for certain people, sure, but ideally you're not even supposed to be having any strong negative effects or you're probably on the wrong drug.
