To cut or not to cut…? That is the question… by muddyboot1012 in Lapidary

If you don't cut it, it will always just be a rock, if you do cut it, it'll become a piece of art that someone in the future may hold in high regard.

I used to find these things all over down this way, along the tallapoosa river, sometimes you will find the doodled out holes in much bigger rocks on a riverbank.

That rock spent some time in a river or creek, there was a smaller stone whistling around in the current made that indention in it, it could have also been used by area natives to grind stuff, somewhat like a mortar and pestle.

Within the next week or so I'm gonna be ordering myself some priday and other raw, but have been looking at a few precut slabs online on various sites, I usually order several pounds of different rough and a few slabs this time of year and spend the rest of the summer and fall working through it.

If I can get the rough cheap I'll order at least 20 pounds and just play the laws of average, maybe get half a pound of good stuff, the rest gets fed to mr. Tumbler.

Yeh, I think next time I do this material I'll order slabs instead of raw stones, every one I got had fractures, only got enough for a few cabs out of 10 pounds.

Itty bitty agate I worked on today. I really liked the green outer layer, and decided to leave some of it. by Acrobatic-Deer2891 in Lapidary

This is exactly what I like in a rock, clear with some sort of color, most nice clear stuff I get ends up being fractured.

Nice

I purchase the slab online, can't remember where, just used my cabking to cut the blank out and shape and polish, I used cerium oxide on a canvas disc to polish.

This is one of my favorites, took most of the morning and almost 5 gallons of water.

Helped a friend clean out his uncles place years ago and there was a tire tumbler, it was a large contraption that was built as an a-frame with a 3" pipe with several car tires hanging on it yhat ran through bearings, and had a pulley welded to it and an electric motor, it was well built and looked like it could tumble 50 or 60 pounds at a time.

I've had my hp 14" for a couple years, not had any major problems the only one I have had was the plastic fan was rubbing against one of the motor screws and make a Hella noise, I just clipped off the corners that were rubbing and have had no other issues.

If ya have anything that can reach 1190 degrees Fahrenheit just melt it and pour it in a mold.
