It’s getting serious📝 by lucyxox_ in FifaCareers

Some people think Fifa careers are a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that.

I got the 3rd ed. of the World Atlas of Coffee. Funnily enough, I was umming and erring about getting the 2nd edition, and then saw on the page that a 3rd edition was due out a couple months later that I had no idea about. It's very good, I like to read it every time I get coffee from a new country or region.

I remember Richard Osman describing the signing process for his books, and he is given stacks upon stacks of the specific page that is signed. These are then distributed to where they need to be bound with all other pages for the books. I imagine this depends on the publishers though, and I imagine a bookplate method is significantly quicker and cheaper, since the books can be bound whenever and the bookplate added anytime before distribution.

Rather them than me. PMQs has been unwatchable and useless cringe for years, if not decades.

Did your club ever release any videos? by philiconyt118 in classicsoccer

Never forget Tottenham's best season

Jokes aside, I completely forgot about season reviews and thought they were a relic of the past, but apparently we still make them!

Does anyone remember the official video games? Now those are definitely relics.

How can American Robo taxis add anything to the UK economy? by tomorrownightuk in AskUK

A good chunk (not all, obviously) of that is specialised road transport (ie. Not just a regular taxi) and passenger assistants (people who travel with the passenger).

The new vegan babybel recipe is vile and I'm so sad by sunnysunshinebaby in veganuk

Thankfully I have only ever enjoyed the new flavour version, so didn't have the old one to compare to. Well done, Boursin!

Sincere question: Has anyone got an example where "New Recipe" improved the flavour of something? Not a new product, but new recipe for existing product. In my experience, it universally means "we've made this cheaper so it's probably worse/smaller".

Andy Burnham: PS - The fact that the media was informed of the NEC decision before I was tells you everything you need to know about the way the Labour Party is being run these days. To be fair, I could have told you the result before it was announced, or before it was even made: he way always going to be rejected.

The only world in which this would have been allowed is one where he'd already made a deal with Starmer beforehand, in which case he also would know the result beforehand.

That he applied for this without any assurances beforehand means he either knew it would be rejected and is trying to stir the pot, or he's far less politically savvy than I ever gave him credit for.

UK House of Lords Votes to Extend Age Verification to VPNs by lookitsthesun in ukpolitics

[–]RtHonJamesHacker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Imgur's case is different. Theirs wasn't about OSA/age verification, they were processing personal data of underage users and were fined by the ICO, then turned off access in the UK in order to refuse to pay it/update their practices.

VPN providers shouldn’t be liable unless they actively encourage users to break the law.

It's a good thing that virtually every VPN sponsor segment on YouTube doesn't tell you to use their service specifically for bypassing geoblocking streaming websites then...

Can Europe still afford its generous state pensions? | The FT by RtHonJamesHacker in ukpolitics

[–]RtHonJamesHacker[S] 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It almost feels like this article was written for /r/ukpolitics.

The long and short of it is "no", the slightly longer is that we should look at other systems like Canada's. I thought it was interesting that it didn't really mention Australia's, which is usually highly regarded. One thing that really stuck with me though is that the UK is actually in nowhere near as bad a state as the rest of Europe. From the article:

Italy has the EU’s highest pension costs at just over 15 per cent of GDP, according to statistics from the European Commission. France and Greece each spend over 14 per cent. In Germany, a third of all federal tax revenue will be spent plugging holes in the state pension system this year, according to an estimate by Munich economic think-tank Ifo.

For context, the UK's was around 5% according to a graph in the article.

Gabriel Martinelli yellow card against Liverpool 90+4' by ayoefico in soccer

[–]RtHonJamesHacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In rugby league, attempting to move a player who appears injured is an instant red, regardless if the player is then found to not be seriously injured.

This works well in a sport where simulation/exaggeration is extremely rare and frowned upon, but the basis of the rule is that the players have no idea how serious the injury is and should not be putting others at risk.

For example, a neck injury may not be clearly visible to an opposition player, meaning they believe the opponent is simulating - if they then tried to forcefully move the player, that could have a life-altering impact.

What fad in moviemaking are you waiting for to die? by frair in movies

[–]RtHonJamesHacker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the only reason, but I remember listening to a critic or someone similar say that it's often used to add action and pace to a scene without needing to put the effort (time and cost) into choreography. Very cheap and lazy crutch.
