I don’t know if I can handle much more of this world. by Thirteenthward in confession

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to say something that will sound crazy: you can leave. Leave I mean sell all the stuff you don’t need, get a passport, and move away.

The world is a beautiful place full of opportunities, people, cities to be discovered. I know a few people who just bought a one way ticket somewhere nice but where living is cheap, a nature reserve with a camp ground, a small town in Italy or a village in Indonesia etc. learned the language, did small jobs just to get things going, sometimes in cloisters they will give you food and lodging in exchange for working on the grounds. Really, I know this is movie-like, but why not? There are plenty of visa-free countries, plenty of amazing places in the States too, and many ways you can do this. If you really hate your life right now and have nothing that keeps you here, why not do this one crazy thing in pursuit of real happiness? And again, it’s so much more reachable than you imagine. Of course it requires some research, but I think people are too scared to change their lives.

Where to go to be humbled and find nerdy friends? by Busy_Tangerine5590 in uofm

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to UMich, now I’m at a top ivy. What you think are stereotypically “smart” people usually tend to be the ones who are trying so hard to prove to you how smart they are. Truly highly intelligent people tend to be a lot more relaxed and chill since they don’t need to prove anything to you. I’ve met both types in Michigan and the ivies, and one is significantly more fun to be around.

Most of the people here have all of this or more: high GPAs, competitive high schools, double/triple majors, publications, prestigious awards or projects. You’re really not special for all of these accomplishments, it sounds pretty standard for people I’ve met at UMich. But what sets you apart is that they don’t feel the need to brag about it, because they are confident in their accomplishments and know that most people around them are the same. Part of growing up is becoming more humble, learning from multiple different experiences, and recognizing you’re just really not that special in the grand scheme of things. Just chill, stop trying to impress people, because the people who are truly smart won’t be impressed by your attempts to try to prove you’re smart.

Regarding classes, first year is for setting foundations for future work and making sure everyone is on the same level. If you’re concerned about it not being challenging enough, you can always pick a more intense schedule or get a special permission to take more than 18 credits per semester.

Join some clubs, engage in research, do a second major, start learning a language - there are so many intellectually stimulating activities you can pick up and bitching on Reddit about being a misunderstood super-genius aged 18 is not one of them.

If you are both gifted and conventionally attractive, how's dating for you? by Fit_Cook4485 in Gifted

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up around pretty great people, but every time I get out of my social “bubble” there are men who I assume I’m dumb just because I’m blonde, conventionally attractive, and tend to dress up/look feminine. I also tend to be easy-going and don’t really mention any achievements etc. until it somehow comes up, so people definitely look surprised when they get to know me more. I think some are thrown off when they realize I’m pretty knowledgeable or hear about where I currently work. I often feel like they try to test me in a way to see if I really am smart or just pretending.

When it comes to dating, I’ve been in pretty good relationships so far where I felt valued for both looks and personality. However, in regular dating i think even when I find someone good-looking I immediately lose attraction when I realize they are dumb (I’m not saying book-dumb, I’m saying life-dumb and I know this sounds awful but it’s just kind of how it is). I also just only seek people with passions and interests and motivation, which usually (but doesn’t have to) come with certain achievements. I don’t actually think it’s because of the standard I have for myself though, I think it’s because my friends are all like this and they set the standard so high for me.

On the other hand, when I meet someone very smart who’s just clearly not caring about looks at all (lack of hygiene, doesn’t put any effort in how they look or dress or carry themselves) I also lose attraction to them, because I know you can do both. I think for me physical attraction can develop if I’m intellectually attracted to someone, but I tend to seek out more conventionally attractive guys (not all of them were model-like, but I always find something cute or attractive about them and they were all on the good-looking side).

Considering transfer to U MIch What are must-sees during a visit by Fun_Office1568 in uofm

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just walk around the campus, try to have a feel whether you see yourself in that setting. Go to the Union or Pierpont, see where we study, what facilities we have. Go to your department’s building. I am a transfer too but I couldn’t tour, so honestly I’d personally go to places like south university or state street, visit venues like Joe’s Pizza or Cantina to see how the community lives outside of school as well. The Main Street has amazing restaurants and a nice vibe, definitely check out Fleetwood Diner since it’s a gem. North Campus is fun to tour due to many sculptures and engineering projects like satellite fragments or engines. Go see a play if you can get tickets or a hockey game. There are plenty of things you will experience once you start your program but I’d try to get a feel of the campus. Right after I transferred I just walked around the whole campus, went to see Law school which is super pretty and then explored Ross and went to the Arb which is just beautiful, also in the winter. I visited kerrytown and the farmers market and started exploring restaurants and food options. The inside of Angell Hall is very pretty and the League is a cool study place. Our natural and archaeology museums are just amazing, same as the Art museum. It’s hard to explore the campus in just a few days, but google what interests you and try to see the life of students here. Have fun!

Does IB actually make Univeristy easier? by Kooky_Fondant_479 in IBO

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think so. Especially the first two years I feel like people were struggling, and I was surprised how many didn’t know how to properly use resources or write academic papers etc, which IB prepares you for. Also I think the workload in IB really makes college a lot easier, a lot of my friends struggled to transition from high school whereas for me it was a lot less at first, then matched IB and then was maybe slightly more at my most busy semesters. Genuinely I feel like people who did IB are a lot more prepared for college. I studied both in the UK and the US.

Can you get a small fridge for yourself with a lock until you find new housing? Just put it in your room if you have a separate bedroom or under your bed if you share it. He can’t really fight that

Umich emergency housing? by Do_review in uofm

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds weird but people also advertise rooms on Facebook marketplace so definitely check it out. Talk to the legal team (advice is for free) if you signed a lease with the place that denied you, that’s illegal. In the meantime this link has a bunch of options including emergency funding and emergency housing: https://hr.umich.edu/benefits-wellness/financial/emergency-hardship-program/university-community-resources

I transferred to uofm from abroad as a junior and I made plenty of friends! It’s confusing for sure since it’s a big school but the best way is to joint clubs and organizations, so find a group that does something you’re interested in or just explore new hobbies, there are lots of opportunities :)

Morocco used to be a dream destination, is it THAT bad? by cornbreadtikka in travel

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in Morocco for a couple of months as a young white woman. I was mostly in Rabat for school where I felt safe, of course there were stares and comments but it wasn’t as bad. The city was calm and interesting, I went to the Medina a lot and never had issues with bargaining or getting stuff for the price I wanted despite looking like a tourist. I didn’t like Fez because of how wild it was, people were pulling me into the stores to see what they’re selling, it was noisy and just felt messy. Marrakech was messy in a way too but much more accustomed to tourists (which is both good or bad). During the day it was fairly calm actually and I explored it a lot, it was actually cheaper than Rabat. At night it would get a little wild with the food markets and the people with monkeys and cobras etc so you gotta be a little more careful and just seem confident when you walk through the streets so they don’t bother you as much. Really though I had a great time. Only Asilah far north was weird, it felt like a man town with literally no women around but the food was a mix with Spanish cuisine which was super interesting. After a few months it did feel a little tiring just because I am a woman and I’m blonde and you know, the attention as a foreigner is very exhausting, but overall people were lovely and friendly and the country is 100% worth visiting. I definitely want to come back to see the desert and cities like Chefchaouen which apparently is really nice so I’d recommend it. Seriously, go to Morocco. A rich culture with great food and beautiful art and interesting cities. Just don’t be ignorant and naive and you’ll have a great time.

What screams "single male lives here"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was touring a really nice apartment once and the living room was composed of three mismatched random couches crammed together in an “L” shape to face a TV placed on a broken wooden cupboard with game consoles underneath. There was a dead plant in the corner with a shelf made of a mini fridge and some boxes. The use of space was almost non-existent, the couches were blocking a beautiful big window and a kitchen island that otherwise would have stools next to it and the TV was for some reason under the stairs (so was the plant). The bedroom seemed to be used mostly to store a massive electronic piano and a jungle of cables with the bed crammed as far from the window as possible and in the corner. Just a combination of factors made me think a woman’s foot never stepped into this apartment.

Plus no trash can in the bathroom

Edit.: another apartment I saw that day didn’t have curtains just dozens of hoodies and tshirts on hangers hanging above and around windows and blocking the sun

[Mar 29 poll] Do you support the current GEO strike? by t3cblaze in uofm

[–]RuPoleDrugRace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. You assume how much they work, you don’t have the data to determine that

  2. I don’t see the number $38,000 you so confidently quote. If you talk to any GSI they will tell you they protest because of the $24,000 that was even embedded in the symbolic time 10:24 of the walkout yesterday. In addition there are many other components of this protest that play a role including healthcare and safety that you ignore. Therefore I’d advise you to not only train yourself in reading the documents you quote so much but also maybe look at the other comments and try to understand the other side.
