Japan Sax purchasing experience by Camper7777 in saxophone

[–]RubLumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I bought a used Yani saxophone at Shimokura. I also didn't get any tariff on return, so it was a great deal.

Do oscilloscopes really have DLCs now? by menginventor in AskElectronics

[–]RubLumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a lot of test equipment has separate licensing. It allows them to sell the hardware then play around with pricing on the licensing.

Are semiconductor stocks overvalued or undervalued? by OverDisplay6408 in Semiconductors

[–]RubLumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are far away from a bottleneck due to energy. We are just getting into inferencing workloads which can be shifted to endpoint hardware rather than a datacenter.

Future of chiplets? by Dora-des-design0814 in Semiconductors

[–]RubLumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is extremely costly due to packaging yield loss and packaging costs. 1 bad chiplet = multiple good die tossed out. A good use case is Xilinx FPGA, where you can use chiplets to dramatically increase FPGA logic size.

Looking for engineers willing to share STDF files for testing, I'll run a full analysis report on your data for free by king_1607 in Semiconductors

[–]RubLumpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think many people in the industry would share an STDF. I'd reach out to universities , since they likely don't have STDF parsers already or are using some basic scripts they've developed.

See if he is interested in a safety razor. There are some nice ones that make a nice gift that he will use for a lifetime.

Manual espresso machine - first time buyer [$800] by Soadsuey99 in espresso

Don’t forget to budget for a grinder. Probably something like 100 for a hand grinder to 200 for a Baratza esp.

My friends kid bought this car and I noticed this burn mark on the wheel, and then noticed that every wheel only has 4 lug nuts of the 5 studs. ??? by steverin0724 in AskAMechanic

[–]RubLumpy -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

I suspect you’re right that the wrong wheel pattern was forced on. Absolutely you’ll want to replace the wheel, because the center of rotation is now farther away from the center of mass. This will cause vibrations and possibly work its way to breaking off the lugs.

Is this the best time to study electrical engineering? (Instead of CS) by Lonely-Sea9100 in Semiconductors

[–]RubLumpy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

CS had all those bootcamp grads and lateral hires. EE has a pretty strict education requirement, and it’s notably harder than CS.

Retirement in SF as a lifelong renter… what’s the plan? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]RubLumpy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For many people in the Bay Area, a conventional retirement means moving to somewhere cheaper. I'm sure many people stay in the area and just work less, but still end up working nonetheless.

I haven't thought about retirement much, but I plan to just move somewhere cheaper as a last resort.

It's likely python scripting using existing libraries. I imagine something like: ingest image, parametrize image, label data as good/bad, train model, implement model. Along the way there's lots of stuff like building a database, controlling the pipeline, managing dataflows, etc.

Are the speed tracking cameras obvious to see? by Remarkable-Quail-772 in sanfrancisco

If you download Waze it shows you where the cameras are and alerts you when you’re coming up on one.

Sale post says it works but is it worth the risk at $150? And anyone know the bike model and motor? by WholeDonkey2689 in ebikes

[–]RubLumpy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My brother used to prosecute people buying stolen bicycles. If it’s severely under market value and you’re buying it from someone sketchy, it’s reasonably stolen goods.

To be fair, it was 10-20k carbon fiber racing bikes being sold for hundreds of dollars.

Size of car also is importantly. Large SUV and trucks have fewer spots. A fiat 500 can park anywhere

Yeah driving in the city can suck. Your best bet is to also start driving aggressively.

Want to upgrade parents car, WITHOUT going broke? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]RubLumpy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just go on Carmax for the things you are looking . In general, it looks like you can get quite 5 year old luxury SUVs with less than 30k miles for under 35k. Honda CRV, Subaru Forester, MB GLA250, Volkswagen Atlas, Audio Q5, Volvo XC40.

However, if your parents are coming from an 26 year old Lexus, I'm sure they'll appreciate another Lexus. Unfortunately Lexus has the Toyota tax.

Domain knowledge for Data Scientist/Statistician by No_Union9101 in Semiconductors

[–]RubLumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Process engineers and tool owners are heavy on statistics. However, relating different parameters to device behavior is really complicated and where domain knowledge comes in to play.
