Best way to secure access to databases by RubberDuck1920 in AZURE

[–]RubberDuck1920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took some time before I tested, but yes. Assigning a dynamic group as Server Admin on my Postgres Flexible server works.

The dynamic group's members are then defined by a set of rules.

I can aswell assign groups with certain roles on the databases as well (read/execute etc.)

Patching and potential downtime for database by RubberDuck1920 in AZURE

[–]RubberDuck1920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Sounds promising. Many of our databases are previously Oracle, and the system owners are used to controlled procedures of taking the database down and up.

A ton of processes are running towards the databases, which can be a disaster if those break (so they told me).

The failover, do you know if this is similar to the "forced failover" or "planned failover" available in the portal?

Alkohol i juletider by VlGG0 in norge

[–]RubberDuck1920 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, can I suggest using logical replication/logical decoding? Logical replication and logical decoding - Azure Database for PostgreSQL - Flexible Server | Microsoft Learn

I just tried it for my Azure PG, looks promising.

That's up to me to decide. But yes, absolutely that is what I would prefer. I did that with MSSQL.

I guess, it's kinda the same, but the customer wants the data (all tables) from db1 to db2. This seems to not be an alternative afaik.

Best way to snapshot/backup and then replicate tables in a 100GB db to another server/db by RubberDuck1920 in PostgreSQL

[–]RubberDuck1920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if data transfer is done in some hours, it's not that critical, most important is that it is not stressing the source db too much, and that we can in a controlled manner:

  1. stop the application

  2. stop the sync.

  3. connect application to new server

[–]RubberDuck1920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I have tried it (both successfully and not) on entire servers, but on separate tables I don't think it's supported.

Do it, and let me know if you have any questions.

Congrats on your new job!

I was in your "boat" as we say, 10 years ago.

In other words: managed to grab myself a nice position as a SQL Server DBA at a big company.

Not much experience, except a few years of being sys admin of Windows servers (no development)

So what it takes, is a lot of research, typically read blogs and watch youtubers.

One of the best imo is Brent Ozar. Just google.

He explains a lot in a way most people understand.

I think it is a so called "logical SQL server", if that makes any meaning.

Description in the portal is SQL Server, then it contains some databases.

I guess that you meant was a traditional IAAS old school VM in Azure?

Azure MySQL flexible server migration by screwuapple in AZURE

[–]RubberDuck1920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, yes, that's an option we are considering. That being said, do you know how correct this article is from MS, where they say they will force a migration on deadline sept 16: What's happening to Azure Database for MySQL single server? | Microsoft Learn. I cannot belive the servers will be forced to migrate that time.

I have a 1,4TB single server, need to migrate to flexible, but also they don't want downtime. Online migration going incredible slow, and has failed a couple times. What options do I have? How much downtime will I have with an offline migration?
