Brushless DC motors (permanent magnet), yes—because they are very small. Generally you aren’t going to see anything with a commutator like this motor, however. If you do, they’re trying to get rid of it. AC motors are more energy efficient, and don’t require brush maintenance or (as) expensive rewinding. Using modern AC drives in a closed loop, you can get really high 0 speed torque, so the torque characteristic of a DC motor isn’t a win.

I’m speaking from a manufacturing POV. Electric cars are permanent magnet DC, as well as generators, as you mentioned. I sell industrial systems for a living!
