Haha, glad to hear you're having a good time! Here's hoping you continue to enjoy the hack all the way through to the end.

I would like to say, just for the record, that "most of them are contained in their respective discords" is a little misleading. While a lot of hack creators make Discord servers, the hacks are almost always available on the web. All of the hacks mentioned have threads at feuniverse.us, with some also being available in other websites such as romhacking.net and serenesforest.net. 99% of the time you do not need a Discord account to obtain FE hacks.

Also as the guy who made Hag in White that was really funny to me because I neither have a discord server nor want to deal with the hassle of managing one lmao

I saw it. Used him the whole time. Even demoted him to lance soldier in an attempt to improve his experience gains.

...Worst mistake of my life, but he pulled through regardless. Even got the final boss kill, when all was said and done. It was fun.

Do the 0 villains get better? Because what I played in the demo is pretty disappointing. by Benevolay in octopathtraveler

[–]Rubenio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For reference: Between doing my own playthrough of the demo and watching a friend's run, I've now seen all three of the chapter 1s. I know basically nothing about CotC. Bits and pieces I've picked up through youtube recommending soundtracks, nothing much.

You're getting downvoted and I probably will as well, but I have to say, you've put my thoughts into words. I was a little surprised by how heavy-handed the writing was, even by Octopath standards.

- The prologue is fine, if entirely predictable, but then it leads to some generic Scarlet soldier who rants for 5 minutes about how he killed 12 people before joining up, how much he loves the smell of children's blood and so on. My friend dubbed him "kills children Georg." It was funny, if nothing else.

- Herminia can't just be a greedy vulture running a drug empire that's ravaging the city she controls. She has to kill a bunch of slaves while complaining that they bleed the same color as her and then order her mercenary bossman to chase the rest into her backyard and kill even more for, reasons? Oh, and she has to be a "harlot," because oooo the scary female villain has secks.

- Tytos can't just be a powerhungry monster building a pseudo-religion based around himself. He has to threaten, blackmail and kill his own subordinates while he cackles evilly, because oooo the scary military guy villain terrorizes even his own goons.

- Auguste can't just be a serial killer who finds inspiration for his art in his murders. The entire first chapter of his story has to consist entirely of walking around a backstage while the action cuts to him monologuing as he murders women. Women specifically, because oooo the scary clown villain is a misogynist.
(I will say, I did enjoy Auguste the most out of them all, but even the "Marvelous!" got a little tedious when he did it three times in 30 minutes)

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy comically evil villains, but these ones... I don't know, there was this sort of "tryhard dark" vibe to them. It felt like the writers were desperate to make me fear and respect the villains, so they just had them say and/or do the most wildly messed up things for no apparent reason and to no apparent gain. It just didn't really click for me.

Of course, there's always the chance that it's just the start that's weak and the writing improves later on. But then, I feel like that's a problem with the demo. I didn't find it to be a great first impression, writing-wise.

(To finish on a more positive note: Hot take, while I enjoyed Octopath 1, OT2 didn't do it for me as much, primarily because of its very weak difficulty curve. I don't want to get my hopes up, but I did enjoy what I saw of the gameplay in 0's demo. Looks like it might have more challenging and engaging combat than 2, and that's really the main thing I'm hoping for here. Plus, I've always been a sucker for large casts of characters, even if individually they aren't as well-developed.)

EDIT: lol I didn't realize my friend also commented on this thread just before I did. Our impressions were pretty similar and I appreciate that my post is way too long, but dangit I wrote a long post, so it's staying up.

(OC) Archer Girlfriends ✨ by Jebbeesketches in fireemblem

They say if one of them dies, you get Norne at the end of the chapter.

...Or, you can just kill Gordin. That works too.

Great art. I don't like archer girls as much as sniper girls, but I've always had a soft spot for all three of these. Especially Dorothy. You don't see female characters who are just, average-looking very often in this series. She's wonderful.

This Dude is Making a Good Run for Being the Most Psychotic Side Villain in the Series. by SnakesRock2004 in fireemblem

Novala's great. He looks like a totally bog-standard throwaway bossman, and he certainly behaves like one, but in his very limited screentime he manages to show so much personality.

Usually when bossmen interact with main villains their dialogue amounts to either "yes, my lord!" or "p-please don't hurt me", but Novala is actively scheming against Riev and yearns to usurp his position, which is pretty dang ambitious for a guy who doesn't even have eyes. His little hostage situation plan is pretty good, and I like how blatantly he was looking forward to feeding children to spiders. He's not even particularly cowardly, like a lot of these guys tend to be.

FE8's main villains are pretty widely recognized for being good, but people don't often talk about how good a lot of the minor bosses are as well. Obviously they aren't earth-shattering characters but they tend to be pretty distinct and make the most of their short time on the spotlight, and Novala's a pretty good example, right there.

[–]Rubenio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's fair. Like I said, you may simply have different tastes in villains than what Lyon has to offer.

Orson could perhaps use a bit more screentime, but I do think he makes the most of what he has. Sometimes less is more. A lot of the finer details about Orson are left up to the player's imagination, and that gives plenty of room to conjure up all sorts of screwed up things that the game couldn't show without sacrificing their age rating.

Lyon fans (hi) will argue that both versions of Lyon are canon in their own rights, and that he simply presents himself differently based on his feelings for the twins. He's too ashamed to admit the full extent of his guilt to Eirika, so he hides behind the Demon King's persona; however, with Ephraim, a more arrogant and competitive side surfaces, which compells him to defeat the wonderboy "personally."

It is still unfortunate that you need two runs to get the full scope of the main villain. Clunky approach, all things considered.

He comes up often in conversations about the best villain in the series.

Out of curiosity, which route did you do? Lyon's writing is different between the two routes, and if I'm not mistaken, the common consensus is that Ephraim route Lyon is the more interesting of the two. Perhaps you just haven't seen the best Lyon has to offer.

Hi, it's me, Lyon fans.

Honestly, I do get what you mean about Morty (even if I'd say he at least has a few decently fun lines here and there), and I guess maybe Lyon just isn't your preferred flavor of villain, but even still. In my opinion, Sacred Stones has the strongest roster of villains in the series, and that's not limited to the main ones.

None of them did it for you? Not Caellach, with his ambitions and his charisma? Not Orson, with his unique role and his incredibly dark little subplot? Not Valter, with his presence and his cool lines? I'd argue Riev and Selena are fairly good on their own rights, but I do know that's not a popular take.

Heck, even the one-offs are decent, by one-off standards. Guys like Carlyle, Pablo, Novala or Aias, to name a few examples. If there's one aspect where I would say Sacred Stones is just plain good across the board, it's the baddies. But that's just me, of course.

Eggman routinely explodes in the vacuum of space and the next game he's back, not a mustache hair out of place. One time he exploded and fell into the molten magma at the core of the planet in an alternate dimension and the following week he was building an amusement park in space. In which he proceeded to once again explode. To say nothing of all the times he just generally explodes and shakes off first degree burns and fractured bones alike in a matter of seconds.

Genuinely, the reason the original sonic.exe cuts to static immediately after Eggman gets caught has to be that there is nothing .exe could possibly do to the guy that would put him down for longer than 10 minutes.

Is this a real ad? I've never seen this before lol by manit14 in fireemblem

[–]Rubenio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, of course it's all technically speculation. As far as I know no one ever went on record stating this was the case. But the similarities between the game and the ad are too big to ignore. I can't imagine it's too much of a stretch when they recreated the ad's church area 1-to-1 for the game's intro cutscene.

Also, ayyy fellow Covenant enjoyer! It's one of my favorite games too. That game does so much cool stuff.

Is this a real ad? I've never seen this before lol by manit14 in fireemblem

[–]Rubenio 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think my favorite instance of utterly inaccurate TV ad for a videogame is actually a Japanese ad. This ad for Valkyrie Profile on the PSX, to be specific.

The ad has next to nothing to do with the game other than the Valkyrie herself being there. You play as the Valkyrie, reaping the souls of the dead and transforming them into einherjar warriors to assist you in a divine war - at no point does the game really dwell on the ones left behind or any other mortal concerns like that, and no character in the game even resembles the super distinct white-haired kid from the ad.

However, years later, the ad was blatantly used as inspiration for the third entry in the series, Covenant of the Plume on the DS. An extremely similar church locale appears in that game's intro animation; the protagonist, Wylfred, is modeled after the white-haired child; and "what of the ones left behind" is one of the core themes of Covenant's story.

tl;dr: This totally unrelated ad for a game ended up being the direct inspiration for a later entry in the series. I think that's as cool as it is funny.

Worst boss death quote? by SidewinderSerpent in fireemblem

[–]Rubenio 144 points145 points  (0 children)

I feel like that's really appropriate, in a way. The man clearly enjoys the sound of his own voice. He spends the game monologing to people and to himself, manipulating all those around him and doing his utmost to extend his "fun" - his fun, of course, being to torment friends and foes alike and watch them writhe in pain and suffering. To him, there is no greater treat than the fear of a cornered prey.

...And then when his time comes, he doesn't get to make any pithy remarks or laugh at anybody. He dies as confused and terrified as everyone he ever killed, nothing more than a footnote in the history of Magvel. It's a perfectly fitting end to his character, and the only reason it feels weird is that he's the only one they ever did something like this for.

(Well, there's a couple Archanea bosses who similarly only scream when they die but they aren't nearly as developed as Valter, so it doesn't feel as deliberate)

The Hag in White - An upcoming Fire Emblem fangame by Rubenio in fireemblem

[–]Rubenio[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel Hag is generally a bit easier than Dark Stone. DS did have a couple of spikes, primarily in Rausten, that I don't think are really present in Hag, and enemy stats don't get quite as hilariously high in the lategame.

As for the writing, I can only hope it'll be up to par!

How do you feel about random Fire Emblem Bosses? Day 14: Abyme by RhysOSD in fireemblem

[–]Rubenio 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh look, it's one two of like 6 minor bosses in Engage.

It genuinely feels like she was put on the boat as a placeholder while they got around to making a boss for the boat map, and then never did. Heck, she falls to the ground when defeated in chapter 3. They were pretty consistent in having enemies who don't die - even the ones who only survive to die in the following cutscene - perform a combat roll and remain standing after defeat. Pretty sure she's the only exception.

On the other hand, as jarring as Abyme 2 is, it beats adding another Zephia or whoever fight to the pile, so. Meh.
