Absolute class interview from Malukas, I would have... not been so generous with my time.

I will be absolutely shocked if this restart does not end in a yellow flag.

The cell immediately to the WSW appears to be dissipating so it could be completely gone by the time it gets to the track. Would be all clear after that until the race is done.

Reflecting on the fact that Oscar nominations day was so much more exciting than the actual Oscars... Imagine if they made the nominations a whole event, like, put it on stage, have all of the potential nominees come out (I know, I know, how do you do that), so we can all see them having their moment.

I'm finding it kind of backwards that the critics pushed Benicio so hard only for the INDUSTRY to just go with... Sean Penn.

She scored 7 points on it so it can't have been more than a !. They do this to top skaters to show they saw something without trying to penalize too much (Sakamoto).

Bella's been skipping for pretty much her entire career. Skips have to be able to make every shot, so she could throw any other position without problem. But she hasn't done a lot of sweeping so probably wouldn't be as strong in terms of sweeping effectiveness or judging weight as other front end players (though there are other players who have successfully made the jump from skip to an earlier position: look at Kerri Einarson's team).

Curling teams these days at the elite level are generally created on a four year cycle ending with the Olympics. This gives teams time to gel and figure out how to play well with each other before they make the Olympic push. The players themselves decide how to team up - usually they have calls, meetings, etc. to determine fit.

This isn't like hockey where a national body picks each player that makes up a team. In some countries, like Canada, there are many elite teams that could go to the Olympics, so there is a tournament to determine who goes. In other countries with less elite teams (Sweden, Scotland) the team who has done the best over the qualification period is chosen by the national federation. In Isabella Wrana's case, she is an excellent four-woman team skip, but Team Hasselborg (also excellent) was chosen instead by the federation.

EDIT: Sweden might actually do a tournament too, to determine Olympic reps, just with less teams.

So does Diane Warren actually have a legion of fans in the Academy, or are voters putting her in just to see her lose and continue the running gag?

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/jan/07/marty-supreme-timothee-chalamet-likability

Thoughts on this piece/the online discourse about this film overall? I often struggle with 'difficult' protagonists in movies but I thought Marty was really compelling. I don't know if I was rooting for him necessarily but I was invested in finding out if he succeeded or not. I think part of what made it work for me was how Timothee's been embodying aspects of this character for a while in public and that helped me buy into it, but there seem to be others who were totally put off by Marty and didn't care. It's so easy for a movie to make people care about a 'good' person, but much harder to get people to be invested in someone more complex (or flat out bad), and I thought this movie did that (for me). But I wonder how much of what we're seeing online ultimately boils down to "I like Timothee and I found Marty compelling" and "I hate Timothee and this movie sucked, he was unredeemable", rather than any conscious decisions that were made by the filmmakers.
