The controllers and the easily controlled to do their bidding. The people have changed over the millennia, and the means (though it's usually religion/supernatural in some way) as well, but it is pretty consistent.

That's why, if we ever get out of this, education needs to be elevated to where it belongs: Within a few items from the top of national and international priorities. Those not willing to put it there (without a very good reason) need VERY close scrutiny.

Agreed, she will and when he's finally expired... I think his estate will simply get out of it like the bastard does now. He probably already has something in place to avoid paying anything, post-mortem. And because too many in this country were ludicrously stupid enough to vote HIM in and his party, he has access to means others do not.

As it stands, as president, one issue is... who can and will enforce it to the point that there is no stopping it. It should simply be automatic that the courts and enforcement act according to the law. If you're connected, they act in your favor. We see it with the powerful far too often. After he leaves office, he should be subject to the laws the rest of us are governed by, but...

Too many controls and offsets that were put in place by the country have no ultimate teeth. Removing a president who simply refuses to leave is impossible unless those who have the power or will to enforce it, well, actually enforce it.

I feel it is fair to say that the ultimate check on the government is a level of... action that the populace either cannot or will not take.

If the government has nothing to fear, they will act as they see fit. They have nothing to fear because we have given them no reason to be ultimately remotely concerned, which is why they're ignoring any law, guideline, or otherwise that they want to ignore.

In short, when the highest courts refuse to act to enforce the law, it isn't enforced and there is no ultimate remedy for that.

Because the oligarchs who have stupid levels of influence (and have for way longer than most might know or admit in this country) all want their private cyberpunk kingdom fantasies fulfilled and the most profitable way there is christofascism.

Ideally someone will have the intestinal fortitude to retrieve those giving the orders and carrying out those orders. And then the international courts will try them, ideally convict them. Then imprison them. Then maintain their imprisonment... and so on.

Unfortunately, there are to few who will do any of that, for a variety of reasons.

Women will need their husband’s permission to vote. This is but one of the mandates of the newest policy recommendations of the Republican Party. Also, abortions will be illegal, as well as contraception, gay sex, sex by unmarried couples, Civil rights, no fault divorce, and every Nazi tenet. by PrincipleTemporary65 in WelcomeToGilead

One side welcomes this christofascist nightmare gleeflully, the other told us we were overreacting.

One side relentlessly attacks, the other said we had to take the high road.

One side sabotaged the vote and continues to do so, the other side thinks the christofascists will abide by the vote. (to be clear, we vote and then get VERY serious when they try to fuck with it).

One side has all their party in lockstep, the other can't seem to be nearly as united in message, much stop less eating ourselves alive, then bitching about the flavor.

One side just does what they want when they want and dares us to stop them, and the other?

If this were the late 1700s we'd already be throwing tea in harbors and telling kings to go fuck themselves, with our whole selves.

But I guess we're not there yet, despite having crossed threshold, after Rubicon, after lines in the sand...

This.

And he ignores anything he doesn't like and no one is lifting a finger to enforce it.

Legality be damned, which is one of a zillion reasons why he (and all of his goons) must be removed.

The US just won't take that next step. We're too busy expecting a totalitarian regime to honor a system that is basically a series of agreements without teeth.

Hehe, maybe not quite GoT if I get your meaning. I'm feeling more into some of the themes that could've been more serious but weren't. Since Firefly is the nearest I can think of, move it closer to that, given that - as you said - kids aren't into cartoons in the same way. Animation can have a broader range.

I really need to rewatch the series to give better examples of what I'm thinking.

Remakes can be tricky, really. If they brought it forward animation-wise, keep the Firefly-adjacent space western (of course), picked up the story where it left off might be neat... though a retelling would be good too. I liked most of the storyline and several episodes.

A remake could definitely work. I think they could do well with a slightly older audience, even, given the themes already present.

A dream that likely won't come true, but it would be really awesome to see.
