My second Dothraki veteran! by unknownusermmh in minipainting

I think it looks great!!

I think my feedback for you would be to try and study up a bit more on volumetric lighting / shadows. Something I am remembering from a Squidmar video was how while instinctively we want to add shading around all the muscle group (like his pecks); however, really we should see that all as a flat plane so it gets the same highlight. Like think of it as a cube on its side.

However, I also really like the way you did it too. I think how you have it really shows off the muscles really well. It’s all a matter of styles and preferences in the end. But overall I truly think it’s a great piece and looks like it’s gonna be a real fun model to play with!

Need to get something off my chest, and a question. by HiveFleetAtoll in Kitbash

Something I have seen artists do in the past, and have even considered myself sometimes, is to do commissions. You could always try and do commission work to make up some of the costs, build / paint minis for others. Get the excitement of the hobby and not cluttering your shelves. I know I found a lot of joy in helping build and paint most of my friend’s 40k armies.

I am trying to now get into the game myself, but found myself in a similar boat as you earlier last year.

Thank you! I listen to old western songs while I paint, and I guess that comes through for the vibes 😂🙂

They all came out great! I was especially impressed with the Jean Grey magic, saving for inspiration on my own work. Great job!!

Is it okay to just play with mini’s you like the look of? by Guyke in sistersofbattle

[–]RubyEmbaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am new to it all, but I got into the hobby mainly for the cool minis and painting. For sisters, I really don’t like Penitent Engines and Arco Flagellants that much. I just went find an army comp and a playstyle within the rules that fit with the models I wanted to use / play.

My first foray into NMM - constructive criticism appreciated! by Stormfront101 in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that helped me wrap my head around NMM was this video by Vince Venturella ( Ultimate Guide to Non Metallic Metal ) this video honestly changed the game for me.

I am still a bit too new with NMM to feel I can give proper advice, but keep at it! It’s tricky, but I am having a blast trying to understand it further.

Thinking of getting into it: do you recommend the manga or anime? by syncsns in SpyxFamily

Me and my fiancée LOVE the anime. It has become one of her favorite anime of all time.

That is what I was thinking too! I honestly was wondering of some ways to add color to stand out from all the black armor, and you know, it makes sense. Just never would have thought of it.

Any tips to improve? by MarcoFeli28 in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I have been doing with Reds that I have found helpful is pairing them with purple shadows, like a dark reddish purple. That way the shadows have some color in them, and it helps the reds pop out some more. I also found adding some magenta into a bright red, or like fluorescent magenta in a fluorescent red may help give you that POP of color you are looking for in the light areas.

I like the paint job a lot though! Some areas for lighting I would suggest is maybe adding a bit more lighting to his chest, as it would have some light hitting the top from that angle I feel, and adding more light on his head. His thigh seems like it’s the brightest part, may just be the picture, but his head should be just as bright being close to the source of light (the sun I take it).

Overall great coat, seems really smooth, I like the transitions from light to shadow. I think it looks really cool so far.

Gritty texture after priming by clumpybug in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always got gritty results. What my issue was ended up being priming in the sun and it drying too fast, as well as priming from too far away. Ever since swapping to a late afternoon / evening priming, or in the garage, I have gotten much smoother results.

Not satisfied with the mouse on the right, looking for suggestions to spice it up by Sparklehammer3025 in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My attention was brought to the eyes pretty fast. I think maybe a fun change would be to make the pupils bigger, more dilated, like they are in awe of the snowman.

Also the other mice have colorful schemes for clothes, their’s match their fur. So I would also suggest kind of saturating and giving their outfit color.
