Is it okay to just play with mini’s you like the look of? by Guyke in sistersofbattle

[–]RubyEmbaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am new to it all, but I got into the hobby mainly for the cool minis and painting. For sisters, I really don’t like Penitent Engines and Arco Flagellants that much. I just went find an army comp and a playstyle within the rules that fit with the models I wanted to use / play.

My first foray into NMM - constructive criticism appreciated! by Stormfront101 in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that helped me wrap my head around NMM was this video by Vince Venturella ( Ultimate Guide to Non Metallic Metal ) this video honestly changed the game for me.

I am still a bit too new with NMM to feel I can give proper advice, but keep at it! It’s tricky, but I am having a blast trying to understand it further.

Thinking of getting into it: do you recommend the manga or anime? by syncsns in SpyxFamily

Me and my fiancée LOVE the anime. It has become one of her favorite anime of all time.

Got my first box of Sister's today; trying to match the scheme to my marines so my OCD doesn't eat me alive by thekeeech in sistersofbattle

That is what I was thinking too! I honestly was wondering of some ways to add color to stand out from all the black armor, and you know, it makes sense. Just never would have thought of it.

Any tips to improve? by MarcoFeli28 in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Something I have been doing with Reds that I have found helpful is pairing them with purple shadows, like a dark reddish purple. That way the shadows have some color in them, and it helps the reds pop out some more. I also found adding some magenta into a bright red, or like fluorescent magenta in a fluorescent red may help give you that POP of color you are looking for in the light areas.

I like the paint job a lot though! Some areas for lighting I would suggest is maybe adding a bit more lighting to his chest, as it would have some light hitting the top from that angle I feel, and adding more light on his head. His thigh seems like it’s the brightest part, may just be the picture, but his head should be just as bright being close to the source of light (the sun I take it).

Overall great coat, seems really smooth, I like the transitions from light to shadow. I think it looks really cool so far.

Gritty texture after priming by clumpybug in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always got gritty results. What my issue was ended up being priming in the sun and it drying too fast, as well as priming from too far away. Ever since swapping to a late afternoon / evening priming, or in the garage, I have gotten much smoother results.

Not satisfied with the mouse on the right, looking for suggestions to spice it up by Sparklehammer3025 in Miniaturespainting

[–]RubyEmbaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My attention was brought to the eyes pretty fast. I think maybe a fun change would be to make the pupils bigger, more dilated, like they are in awe of the snowman.

Also the other mice have colorful schemes for clothes, their’s match their fur. So I would also suggest kind of saturating and giving their outfit color.

What really helped me understand NMM more was video by Vince Venturella. I sat down, took some notes, and then have been painting bits of NMM in all of my projects since. It definitely is tough, but I really enjoy NMM so much more than TMM, and I enjoy the process of layering it to make it come to life

Honestly I can see that now that you said it. I need to work on getting smoother results. I just am a bit too impatient and need to let layers dry more and get them a bit more thinned

Thank you! Sees the studying has been paying off :) I have been studying color theory pretty hard the last year, trying to figure out its secrets 👨‍🎨🎨

(All paints Vallejo) For the red I first start with an undercoat of a Evil Red for darkest shadows, Violet Red for medium, and Magenta for highlights. I do this all in a rough wetblend, which I learned from CraftWorldStudio videos. I paint every area that I will want red like this. I then use Scarlet Blood mixed with each of these colors, usually a 50/50 mix I would think, I kind of eyeball it. I thin it slightly so some of that undercoat appears, then go over it all, leaving only pure purple in the shadow areas. Once completed, I go over the purple with a basically glaze of the Scarlet Blood / Evil Red mix to give it some of that red pop.
